Cover the exit portal first so the egg cannot pass through it. If it may already have gone through, check around world spawn in the Overworld. A later dragon kill is not a dependable way to get another egg.
Find the egg if it teleported
The Ender Dragon egg teleports when struck rather than behaving like a block you can mine. If it disappears after you hit it, look for the purple teleport particles and follow them to its new location. Avoid hitting it repeatedly without controlling where it can land. Minecraft.net explains that the egg teleports when hit and can be pushed by a piston; the Minecraft Wiki tutorial recommends following the particles.
Collect it without losing it to the portal
Before moving the egg, cover the End exit portal so there is no open gap for it to fall through. Make sure there is a safe landing area, then choose one of these in-game methods:
Drop it onto a torch or partial block
- Place a torch two blocks below the egg.
- Break the block supporting the egg so it falls onto the torch.
- Pick up the egg item.
The tutorial also lists a button, slab, or pressure plate as alternatives to a torch for catching the falling egg. See the tutorial’s collection methods.

Push it with a piston
Place a piston facing the egg and activate it with a redstone source. Keep the portal covered and the landing area clear before activating the piston; otherwise the egg could be pushed somewhere unsafe or fall into the portal. The Minecraft Wiki advancement guide also describes the portal-loss risk.
If the egg went through the exit portal
Check around world spawn in the Overworld. The advancement guide reports that a portal teleport can send the egg there, but the exact landing result depends on the save and game version. It also warns that an egg that lands as an item on a non-solid block may despawn after five minutes while spawn chunks remain loaded. If you suspect this happened, search promptly; the five-minute detail is a gameplay mechanic reported by the guide, not a guaranteed timer for every situation. Should you defeat the dragon again?
Do not assume another dragon kill will replace a missing egg. The community-maintained Ender Dragon page says Java Edition produces an egg only on the first dragon kill, while Bedrock Edition produces eggs on the first and second kills because of a bug. That account is version-sensitive and is not a guarantee for every current release. Check your edition and version before relying on it.

Recovery depends on where the egg teleported, whether it reached the Overworld, whether an item despawned, and which edition and version you play. The cited guidance does not establish a universal recovery method for every missing egg. If it is absent from the End and the area around Overworld world spawn, the available sources do not support promising that it can be restored by defeating the dragon again.
