If Call of Duty does nothing when you select Play, hangs while loading, or closes during startup, start with low-risk checks: confirm service status, restart and update your device and game, then use the repair steps for your specific platform and launcher. The right fix depends on which Call of Duty release you’re playing, where you launch it, and what happens on screen.
First, identify what “won’t open” means
Before changing settings, note the exact game, device and operating system, storefront or launcher, any error text or code, and what happens after you select Play. Those details determine which instructions apply.
- No response or a loading hang: the game does not reach its main menu.
- Crash during startup: the game begins to open but closes or freezes before you can play.
- Online connection problem: the game opens, but you cannot sign in or connect. This is different from a launch failure.
- Install or update problem: the game cannot finish installing or updating, so it may not be ready to launch.
Activision separates “My game won’t load or install” from “My game crashes or freezes” in its support categories. Use the category that matches the failure rather than treating every startup issue as the same problem.
Try these low-risk checks first
Check service status
Check Activision’s online services status and the status page for your platform. If the game opens but you cannot connect, Activision’s Black Ops connection guidance also recommends checking system status. A service issue is not the same as a game that fails to start; use the symptom to decide which branch to follow.

Restart, then update
- Close the game and its launcher completely. If the launcher appears stuck, exit it rather than leaving it running in the background.
- Restart your PC or console.
- Install available updates for the game and your device. Activision’s installation guidance recommends updating the console before installing, and its crash guidance calls for current PlayStation system software.
- Try launching again and note whether the symptom or error code changes.
If you play on PC, check requirements and repair the game
Confirm that your Windows version and hardware meet the published requirements for your specific Call of Duty release. Requirements are title-specific; do not assume that a PC capable of running one release meets another’s requirements. For Warzone, Activision lists Windows 10 and Windows 11 support, directs players to check the game’s minimum requirements, and recommends installing applicable graphics drivers. Consult the current Warzone PC requirements rather than relying on an old driver version or a requirement from another release.
Next, repair the installed files using the option for the launcher you use. The names and paths below are launcher-specific:

If repair reports a problem, let it finish before launching again. The available action depends on the release and launcher; do not assume a menu option documented for one storefront exists in another.
Let Warzone’s first-start shader setup finish
For Warzone, shader preloading is part of the first boot. Activision says navigating away from the main menu can stop the process and lead to performance issues. If this applies to your launch, leave the game at the main menu until shader preloading completes before moving on. This is a Warzone-specific step, not a universal fix for every Call of Duty game.

Check for PC software conflicts without disabling protection
If compatibility and file repair do not resolve the launch problem, look for interference from security software, background applications, or utilities that interact with games. Activision’s Warzone PC guidance and Black Ops 6 PC troubleshooting document these checks:
- Add the game folder to your antivirus exceptions; do not turn off all antivirus protection.
- Close background applications that may conflict with the game. If needed, try a Windows clean boot to help identify a startup conflict.
- Update software used to manage peripherals, such as keyboard, mouse or controller utilities.
- If you disabled Windows Address Space Layout Randomization (ASLR), re-enable it.
- If Activision identifies an overlay or tuning utility as a conflict, disable that utility and test again.
Change one item at a time and test the launch so you can tell which change mattered. Avoid broad security or system changes that are not relevant to the symptom.

If Call of Duty crashes on PlayStation or Xbox
Console steps vary by title and platform. For Black Ops crash issues, Activision recommends the following checks in its crash guidance:
- PlayStation: install current system software. For specified crash errors, restart the console; Activision also advises keeping it ventilated and deleting old files or game data as part of troubleshooting.
- Xbox: clear the console cache as directed in Activision’s guidance.
Use the directions for your exact console and game rather than applying a Black Ops instruction to every release. If the console itself seems unstable beyond this game, contact Xbox Support or PlayStation Support.
Leave BIOS and Secure Boot changes until you have title-specific guidance
Some Call of Duty releases have security requirements involving TPM or Secure Boot, but the rules differ by game. Activision’s TPM and Secure Boot guidance describes requirements for Black Ops 7 and Warzone and notes that other titles have their own rules. Do not change BIOS or UEFI settings just because a game will not launch. Activision warns that incorrect changes can cause system problems; if you are unfamiliar with these settings, consult your hardware maker or a professional.
When to contact support
If the checks for your exact title and platform do not help, send support enough information to distinguish a launch failure from a crash or connection issue. Activision offers a PC crash-report option and support categories for loading/install and crash/freeze problems through its support site.
