Use a saved PSN backup code first. At the sign-in prompt, select Trouble Receiving Code?, choose Sign In Using a Backup Code, and enter one of your 10 single-use codes. On PS5, the sign-in screen is under Settings > Users and Accounts > Account > Sign In. On PS4, press Triangle at the two-step verification screen, then choose Trouble Receiving Code? and Sign In Using Backup Code.
If the phone or mobile number is gone and you have no backup code, PlayStation’s documented route is its Online Assistant/Support. You must verify that you own the account; you cannot display backup codes online while locked out. If another device already has the same verification method registered, use that device to sign in and register a new passkey instead.

Choose the recovery route that matches what you still have
Your next step depends on which form of access remains. A replacement handset, SIM, authenticator app or security key does not automatically replace the method that PSN has on file. It helps only when that same method was already registered, or after Support restores the account.

Email access alone does not let a locked-out user view two-step verification backup codes. PlayStation’s setup guidance says that users who cannot sign in cannot check those codes online.

Sign in with a PSN backup code
Use the code at a normal sign-in screen
- Start signing in to your PlayStation Network account.
- When the two-step verification prompt appears, select Trouble Receiving Code?.
- Select Sign In Using a Backup Code.
- Enter one of your saved backup codes and select Verify.
- Continue the sign-in process.
PSN issues 10 backup codes. Each code is single-use, so a code that has already completed a sign-in will not work again. Keep the remaining codes available until you replace the lost verification method.
PS5 path
- Open Settings on the PS5 home screen.
- Choose Users and Accounts.
- Open Account, then select Sign In.
- At the two-step verification screen, choose Trouble Receiving Code?, then Sign In Using a Backup Code.
- Enter an unused code and verify it.
PS4 path
- Open Settings.
- Select Account Management > Sign In.
- When the two-step verification screen appears, press the Triangle button.
- Choose Trouble Receiving Code?, select the relevant reason, and choose Sign In Using Backup Code.
- Enter an unused code and complete verification.
Replace the lost phone or two-step verification method after you get in
Using a backup code gets you through the sign-in check; it does not update the phone number or authenticator registered to the account. Change that method while you still have access.
Deactivate and reactivate two-step verification
- Sign in with a backup code or another registered device.
- Open the account security controls where two-step verification is managed.
- Deactivate the old two-step verification setup.
- Reactivate two-step verification with the new phone or the method you intend to keep.
- Save the newly generated backup codes in a secure, offline location.
PlayStation says that deactivating and reactivating two-step verification generates a new set of codes. This is especially important when most of the old codes have been used. Do not rely on a partially consumed set after changing the phone.
Register a passkey as a second recovery option
If another device still has the same verification method registered, use it to sign in and register a new passkey. A passkey gives you an additional sign-in method tied to a compatible device, reducing dependence on one lost phone. Register it only after the account is accessible and keep the device’s own unlock method available.

When both the phone and backup codes are gone
PlayStation specifically directs users who have neither backup codes nor access to their phone or mobile number to its Online Assistant. This is the documented no-code recovery route. Begin with the account-recovery options that describe your situation, then follow the identity-verification process Support provides.
- Open PlayStation Support and start the Online Assistant.
- Select the account-access problem that indicates you do not have backup codes and cannot access the phone or mobile number.
- Provide the account details requested by the assistant.
- Complete the ownership checks requested by Support.
- After access is restored, replace the two-step verification method, generate new backup codes and consider registering a passkey.
There is no guaranteed response time or universal list of documents published for every account-recovery case. Have accurate account information ready, but provide only what the official Support flow requests. Do not send account credentials to people offering unofficial “code recovery.”
Use another registered device if one still works
A lost phone is not necessarily a locked account. PlayStation says you can bypass the missing phone when the same verification method is registered on another device.
- Use the other registered device to complete the PSN sign-in.
- Open the account’s security settings once signed in.
- Register a new passkey on a device you control.
- Replace or remove the lost phone’s two-step verification method and create a fresh backup-code set.
This route depends on the second device actually having the same verification method already registered. Simply owning a new phone, installing an authenticator app or inserting the old number’s SIM into another handset does not prove that PSN will recognize it as the registered device.

If the verification code is late or never arrives
Do not immediately assume the account is lost when a code is delayed. PlayStation says a verification code remains valid for 10 minutes after the sign-in attempt.
- Select Resend Code once the option is available.
- Restart the phone to refresh its connection to the mobile network.
- Check that airplane mode is off.
- Confirm that the phone has a usable mobile-network signal.
- Enter the newest code rather than an older message if several arrive.
If the 10-minute validity window expires, begin a fresh sign-in attempt and request a new code. Repeated requests can produce several messages, so check the time and use the code associated with the most recent attempt.
What you cannot do while locked out
You cannot retrieve backup codes from the account page
Backup codes are available to users who can sign in and reach the relevant account settings. If the two-step verification challenge stops you at the sign-in screen, PlayStation says you cannot check those codes online from the locked account. Search places where you deliberately saved them instead: a password manager, an encrypted note or a printed record kept in a secure location.

A new phone does not automatically inherit PSN verification
Moving to a different handset or replacing a SIM does not, by itself, transfer the PSN two-step verification registration. The new device must already be recognized through the registered method, or you must regain account access and set up the method again.

A newly installed authenticator app is not proof of ownership
Installing the same authenticator application on a replacement phone cannot recreate the secret that was stored on the lost phone. It becomes useful after you successfully change the account’s two-step verification setup.
A new hardware security key is not a guaranteed bypass
A security key works for this account only if that key was registered before the lockout, or after Support restores access and you register it. Buying another key during the lockout does not substitute for identity verification.
After recovery: secure the account before ending the session
- Confirm that the account’s phone number or authenticator method is the one you currently control.
- Deactivate and reactivate two-step verification so the old method is removed and a new code set is issued.
- Store all 10 new backup codes somewhere you can reach without the phone used for two-step verification.
- Register a passkey on a compatible device that you regularly protect with a screen lock or other local authentication.
- Test the new sign-in method before signing out of every device.
- Remove access to any lost phone or device from the account’s security settings when those controls are available.
Keep at least two independent ways to authenticate: for example, a passkey on a device you control and an offline backup-code record. Never store the only copy of the codes inside the phone that generates your two-step verification prompts.

Common situations and the correct next move
“I found one old backup code.”
Try it at Trouble Receiving Code? > Sign In Using a Backup Code. If it succeeds, immediately replace the lost method and generate new codes. If it has already been used, choose another unused code or use Support if none remain.

“My old number is still active, but I am not receiving texts.”
Use Resend Code, restart the phone, check airplane mode and verify mobile signal. A code is valid for 10 minutes after the sign-in attempt. If delivery still fails, try an already registered device or contact Support rather than repeatedly guessing codes.
“I have access to email but not the 2SV phone.”
Email access does not expose the backup-code list or bypass the two-step prompt. Use a saved code, another registered device, or the Online Assistant’s identity-verification route.
“I bought a new phone and copied my authenticator app.”
Copying the app does not guarantee that the PSN secret or registered device transferred. Attempt the sign-in only if the copied method is actually recognized. Otherwise, use a saved backup code, another registered device or Support.
“I used my last backup code.”
Once signed in, deactivate and reactivate two-step verification to issue a new set. If the final code did not work and no registered device remains, the Online Assistant is the recovery path.
