What to Do If Your VPS Is Compromised and Sending Attack Traffic

A VPS generating attack traffic is an active security incident. Learn how to isolate it, preserve volatile evidence, investigate scope, rotate every exposed credential and decide when a trusted rebuild is safer than cleanup.

Disconnect or quarantine the VPS first, then preserve evidence, open an abuse/security ticket with your host, and investigate before deciding whether to clean the machine or rebuild it. A server sending scans, denial-of-service traffic, credential attacks or other unwanted packets is an active security incident—not merely a billing problem or an abuse complaint.

Containment must stop harm without destroying the evidence needed to identify the entry point and affected credentials. If privileged access or system integrity is uncertain, rebuilding from a trusted image is usually safer than trusting an in-place cleanup.

What to do in the first 15 minutes

  1. Verify the alert is about your VPS. Match the reported source address to the instance, account, region and time window. Check whether the traffic could be an authorized scanner, load test, backup job or security tool. Do not dismiss an alert simply because you do not recognize the destination.
  2. Open the provider’s abuse or security ticket. Record the ticket number and send the VPS identifier, source IP, timestamps with time zone, destination addresses, ports, protocol and any evidence you already have. Tell the provider that you are treating the event as an incident and state what containment you have applied.
  3. Stop outbound traffic. Use the hosting console, security group, virtual network ACL, firewall or an emergency quarantine control to isolate the instance. Restrict both ingress and egress where possible, while leaving a controlled management path for collection.
  4. Preserve what may disappear. Export provider flow logs and snapshots before deleting files, rebooting or reinstalling. Copy records to a separate trusted system and start a timeline.
  5. Escalate early. If customer data, production credentials, regulated information or multiple systems may be involved, contact your incident-response or digital-forensics provider rather than experimenting on the original host.

Write down every decision, including who authorized isolation, when rules changed and whether the reported traffic stopped. Your first timeline entry should include the alert time, the time you confirmed the source and the time containment became effective.

Contain the VPS without destroying evidence

Preferred action: network isolation

Isolation prevents additional victims while preserving the running system for collection. In a provider console this may mean detaching the public interface, moving the instance to a quarantine security group, replacing its default route, or applying a deny-all egress rule. Keep only a narrowly restricted administrative path from a trusted investigation host. If the platform supports a provider-side flow-log export, enable it before changing rules.

Isolation should be coordinated with the hosting provider. A provider may be able to block traffic upstream, preserve network telemetry or supply details that are not visible inside the guest operating system. Update the abuse ticket with the time and method of isolation and ask whether the provider has additional packet, flow or console records.

When you cannot disconnect the network

Powering off is a last resort because shutdown can erase volatile information such as active processes, memory-resident malware, network connections and temporary credentials. CISA’s #StopRansomware Guide advises powering down devices when they cannot be disconnected from the network to prevent further spread. Apply that principle when continued attack traffic cannot otherwise be stopped, but capture the most volatile evidence you can first and document why you had no safer option.

Do not “test” the attacker from the compromised host

Avoid logging into unrelated systems, deleting suspicious files, running broad cleanup scripts or contacting command-and-control addresses from the VPS. Those actions can alter timestamps, trigger malware, spread the compromise or make later attribution harder. Perform analysis from a trusted workstation and treat every credential that was used on the VPS as exposed.

Preserve evidence before cleanup

Evidence has different retention periods. Provider flow logs may roll over quickly, while a disk snapshot can preserve a point in time. CISA’s Federal Government Cybersecurity Incident and Vulnerability Response Playbooks (2024) direct responders to collect perimeter, network and endpoint data, capture memory and disk images when needed, and maintain an evidence log.

Provider and network records

  • Export flow or traffic logs covering the reported interval, including source, destination, port, protocol, byte count and direction.
  • Save security-group, firewall, load-balancer, proxy and virtual-network rule changes.
  • Capture provider-console audit events: logins, API calls, snapshots, interface changes, password resets and instance starts or stops.
  • Ask the provider to preserve records that are not available in your normal retention window.

Host records

On a Linux VPS, collect read-only copies of authentication, service and application logs, shell histories, process and socket listings, scheduled-task definitions, user and key files, package and kernel information, and recent file-change information. Typical commands, run only after isolation and copied to trusted storage, include:

  • date -u and hostnamectl to anchor time and host identity.
  • ps auxwwf, ss -plant and, where available, lsof -nP -i for processes and network sockets.
  • last -a, journalctl --since "YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM" and the relevant authentication log for interactive access.
  • systemctl list-timers --all, service definitions and user or system crontabs for persistence.

Commands vary by distribution and may themselves modify shell history. Prefer your organization’s forensic collection procedure when one exists. If root compromise is suspected, a running host cannot be assumed trustworthy; acquire a provider disk snapshot and, when the decision warrants it, a memory image through qualified forensic support.

Maintain an evidence log

For each item, record the collector, UTC time, source, method, file hash if your process uses hashes, storage location and any transformation. Keep the original snapshot or export immutable and work from copies. This discipline lets you explain what changed and supports provider, legal, insurance or regulatory review later.

Scope the compromise

Attack traffic may come from a web shell, stolen key, vulnerable service, malicious container, botnet agent, cryptominer or an attacker who obtained provider credentials. Do not assume that stopping one process ends the incident.

Check accounts and credentials

  • List local users, recent logins, sudoers and unexpected administrator accounts.
  • Compare authorized SSH keys with your inventory; look for keys added to user or service accounts.
  • Review provider API tokens, deployment secrets, database passwords, cloud credentials and certificates that the VPS could read.
  • Look for application accounts created outside normal change control.

Check persistence and tampering

  • Inspect cron jobs, systemd services and timers, startup scripts, shell profiles and container restart policies.
  • Search web roots and upload directories for web shells or recently modified executable files.
  • Compare critical binaries and packages with a known-good image or package manifest when possible.
  • Review containers and images for unknown registries, privileged settings, host mounts and unexpected entrypoints.

Check network behavior

  • Inventory listening ports and compare them with the intended service design.
  • Correlate host sockets with firewall, proxy and provider flow logs.
  • Group outbound destinations by time, port and volume; identify command-and-control patterns, scanning ranges, mail relays, mining pools or repeated authentication attempts.
  • Compare traffic with the server’s normal baseline. A spike is useful evidence, but an apparently normal rate does not prove the host is clean.

Extend the review to systems that shared credentials, deployment pipelines, images, storage or management networks with the VPS. A compromised server can be the first visible symptom of a broader account or application intrusion.

Clean in place or rebuild?

The right choice depends on how quickly you must restore service, what evidence you need, whether a trusted image exists and how much confidence you require in eradication. Root-level compromise makes an in-place cleanup difficult to prove.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Response option Containment speed Evidence preservation Confidence in eradication Downtime When it fits
Network quarantine Fast when the provider supports it Best starting point; leaves the system available for controlled collection None by itself Service is unavailable or restricted Almost every confirmed incident while scope is assessed
Power off Fast if isolation is unavailable Can lose volatile memory and connection data Does not remove compromise Full outage Only when continued traffic cannot be stopped safely another way
In-place cleanup Potentially fastest restoration Often changes or destroys evidence Lower after privileged compromise; hidden persistence may remain Usually lower Limited compromise with strong evidence, a known entry point and specialist validation
Rebuild from a trusted image or infrastructure-as-code template Slower Preserves the old disk if it is snapshotted first Higher and easier to explain, provided the image and restored data are clean Higher during reprovisioning Root access, modified system files, unknown persistence or uncertain scope

When you cannot establish system integrity, choose the clearer trust boundary: snapshot and isolate the old disk, then create a new instance from a known-good image or infrastructure-as-code template. Restore only clean, necessary data; do not copy executable files, startup scripts or unknown configuration from the old system.

Eradicate the cause and recover safely

  1. Identify the exploited path. Determine whether the entry point was an unpatched service, exposed management interface, weak or reused password, stolen key, vulnerable application, compromised dependency or provider account. If the path is unknown, treat the incident as higher risk.
  2. Patch before exposure. Update the operating system, kernel, web server, framework, plugins, container images and other affected services. Remove or disable software that is not required.
  3. Rotate every reachable secret. Change local and service passwords, SSH keys, provider API tokens, deployment credentials, database credentials, signing keys, certificates and secrets in CI/CD or orchestration systems. Revoke old credentials rather than merely adding new ones. Rotate from a trusted device and assume tokens read by the VPS were copied.
  4. Rebuild when trust is uncertain. Provision from a verified golden image or reviewed infrastructure-as-code. Apply hardened configuration before attaching the public interface. Keep the original snapshot offline or in a restricted investigation account.
  5. Restore clean data selectively. Validate backups for tampering and malware. Restore databases and user content only after checking their age, provenance and integrity. Recreate configuration from reviewed source instead of importing unknown startup files.
  6. Test in quarantine. Confirm required services, authentication, logging, backups and outbound destinations on a private network. Watch for unexpected processes, connections or egress before production exposure.

  • Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
  • Allow management access only from approved addresses or a private administrative network; disable direct root login and password-based SSH where your operating model permits.
  • Use separate accounts and least-privilege roles for administrators, applications, deployment automation and monitoring.
  • Apply default-deny ingress and restrict egress to destinations and ports the service actually needs. Egress limits can prevent a web server from becoming a scanner or spam relay.
  • Enable centralized collection for authentication, firewall, application, provider-audit and flow logs. Protect log storage from alteration by the compromised account.
  • Create alerts for new administrator accounts, SSH-key changes, unusual outbound volume, new listening ports, provider API changes and connections to destinations outside the normal baseline.
  • Verify that backups, golden images and infrastructure definitions are current, restorable and protected from the VPS’s credentials.
  • Document the rebuilt asset, its owner, exposed services, allowed egress and escalation contact.

Run a short period of heightened monitoring after reconnecting. A clean first hour is not proof of eradication; persistence may be dormant or triggered later.

Report, notify and document the incident

Keep the provider updated with containment status, affected addresses, indicators of compromise and the time service was rebuilt or safely restored. Ask for confirmation that any upstream block or abuse action has been removed only after you can demonstrate that the traffic is no longer originating from your infrastructure.

Consider notifying CISA, law enforcement, an industry-sector contact, your cyber insurer or affected customers when criminal activity, material data compromise or contractual reporting thresholds apply. Notification duties vary by jurisdiction, sector, customer agreements and the type of data involved; obtain legal advice for a significant incident rather than relying on a generic deadline.

Your incident record should include:

  • A UTC timeline of alerts, decisions, rule changes, credential revocations, snapshots, rebuilds and notifications.
  • Source and destination indicators, ports, protocols, affected accounts and suspected entry points.
  • Evidence locations, hashes or chain-of-custody details used by your organization.
  • The reason you chose cleanup, shutdown or rebuild and who approved it.
  • Lessons learned, owners and due dates for patching, access, egress, logging and backup improvements.

Guidance to use alongside your response plan

NIST SP 800-61 Rev. 3, published in 2025, is the current NIST incident-response recommendations document and supersedes Rev. 2. It is intended to incorporate incident-response recommendations throughout cybersecurity risk-management activities. Rev. 2, authored by Paul R. Cichonski, Thomas Millar, Timothy Grance and Karen Scarfone and published in 2012 (updated 2021), remains a useful incident-handling reference, but it is not the current revision.

CISA’s 2024 Federal Government Cybersecurity Incident and Vulnerability Response Playbooks emphasize coordinated containment, collection of perimeter, network and endpoint data, memory and disk capture when needed, and a maintained evidence log. CISA also advises preserving highly volatile or short-retention evidence to prevent loss or tampering. Use those principles with your provider’s terms, your organization’s response plan and qualified forensic advice.
