Before selling or giving away an Xbox, back up any settings you want to keep, reset the console to factory defaults using the current instructions for your model, and remove the console from your Microsoft account. Then check that it starts at the initial setup screen rather than showing your profile.
1. Back up settings you want to keep
If you want to carry settings to another console, review Microsoft’s Xbox settings-backup instructions before you reset the Xbox. A factory reset is the point at which to expect the console’s local setup to be cleared, so preserve anything you need first.
2. Reset the Xbox to factory defaults
Follow Xbox Support’s current reset instructions for your specific model. Microsoft’s sale-preparation guidance explicitly names Xbox One; the linked reset guidance is the place to check instructions for your console. Menu labels and choices may differ, so use the on-screen options in the official guide rather than relying on a remembered button sequence.
3. Remove the console from your Microsoft account
- Sign in to the Microsoft account devices page.
- Find the Xbox, open its details, and choose More actions > Remove.
- Confirm the removal, then select Remove.
Microsoft also describes an Unlink action for managing the Microsoft Store device limit. That is a separate account-management action, not a replacement for resetting the console.

4. Check the console before handing it over
Turn the Xbox on after the reset and make sure it presents the initial setup experience, not your signed-in profile. This is a practical handoff check: if your profile or personal information is still visible, do not give the console to the buyer until you have followed the reset instructions again and verified the result.
What a reset does not establish
The cited Microsoft sale and reset guidance does not establish that a factory reset changes a Home Xbox setting or digital-license association. If license sharing matters to you, check current Xbox account guidance for that separately rather than assuming the reset handles it.
