Treat an undated showcase reveal as an announcement, not a launch commitment. Save the original trailer and its exact wording, identify the developer and publisher, check the platform’s official recap, and follow only verified official channels. If an official store page exists, wishlist it and enable normal platform notifications. Until an authoritative source gives a date, describe the game as announced and undated—not delayed or cancelled.
What an undated showcase reveal actually tells you
A showcase can confirm that a project has been publicly announced without committing the team to a launch schedule. The trailer may use “coming soon,” a year, a season, or no timing at all. Those phrases do not have equal precision, and none should be rewritten as a specific date in your notes or posts.

Official showcases routinely combine several announcement types. Xbox’s 2026 showcase recap, for example, includes world premieres, broad timing windows, firm release-date announcements and surprise releases. A game shown without a date is therefore one normal category in a showcase—not evidence by itself that something went wrong.

PlayStation describes State of Play as its official video programme for announcements, new trailers, game updates and release-date reveals. A trailer appearing in a State of Play confirms the presentation, but the game’s status still depends on the wording and follow-up published by the developer, publisher or platform.

Do these steps immediately after the announcement
1. Record the announcement exactly
Make a note while the information is still on screen. Capture:
- the game’s displayed title, including punctuation and subtitles;
- the showcase name and the date it aired;
- the named developer and publisher;
- every platform shown or mentioned;
- the trailer’s wording, such as “coming soon,” “2027,” “holiday,” or no timing;
- whether the footage is labelled gameplay, in-engine footage, or a cinematic trailer.
Save the original trailer or official broadcast segment if possible. Do not silently “correct” a vague phrase into a firm promise. Keeping the original wording lets you distinguish a later change from your own assumption.
2. Locate the primary sources
Start with the developer’s official site and newsroom, then the publisher’s announcement page and the platform’s official showcase recap. A social-media post is useful only when it comes from a verified developer, publisher or platform account. An unsourced database entry, forum post or retailer placeholder is weaker evidence and should not override a primary statement.
Look for an announcement page that repeats the trailer’s platform list and timing language. If the developer and publisher use different wording, record both and apply the conflict rules below rather than choosing the version that sounds most optimistic.
3. Check for an official store page
Search the platform’s own store, not only a retailer or price-comparison site. A Steam “Coming Soon” page or equivalent official listing gives players a stable place to read the description, confirm supported platforms and add the game to a wishlist. A retailer page with a guessed date is not a release confirmation.
On Steam, the company’s marketing documentation says that setting up a store page early gives fans a place to learn about a game, add it to their wishlist and “will automatically get notified when you get to release day.” Wishlist the page only after checking that the developer or publisher is the expected one and that the listing is not for a similarly named project.

4. Preserve a dated record
Keep a simple timeline with the date you checked, the source, its exact wording and the platforms named. This prevents a vague “2027” from turning into a remembered “March 2027,” and it makes conflicting updates easy to spot. Add the URL only when you have the official page in front of you; do not rely on a screenshot without its source and date.
How to keep track without turning rumors into facts
Follow the people who can actually change the status
Follow the developer, publisher and relevant platform accounts, plus the game’s official site or newsletter if one exists. Prioritize announcement pages and video descriptions over reposts. Community accounts can help you notice that an update exists, but verify the wording at its origin before adding it to your timeline.
Use wishlists as an alert mechanism
Wishlist the official store listing on each platform you may use. Steam’s Coming Soon documentation says that players who wishlist a game two years before release can be just as likely to purchase as players who wishlist it two weeks before release. That is Steam’s own comparative example, documented in 2026; it is not an independent industry-wide study, but it explains why wishlisting early is useful rather than premature.
Steam also states that, once the publisher presses the release button, it automatically emails people who have the game on their wishlist. The notification is tied to the publisher’s actual release action, not to a rumor, a leaked date or a retailer listing. Check your account’s notification settings so a legitimate alert is not blocked.
Recheck at meaningful moments
You do not need to search every day. Revisit the official game site, publisher newsroom and platform showcase pages when one of these events occurs:

- a new trailer, demo or development update is announced;
- the game appears in another showcase;
- a platform publishes a new recap;
- the store page changes its description, platforms or timing;
- the developer announces a major milestone or a delay.
Record the date and exact new wording each time. A change from “coming soon” to “2027” is an update in precision, not a specific launch date.

How to describe the game’s status accurately

The safest wording while no authoritative date exists is: “The game was announced at [showcase] on [date] and is currently undated.” If an official source gives a year or season, quote that scope exactly instead of upgrading it to a day.
What to do when sources disagree
Compare every statement on four axes before deciding which one to record:

| Scope | Does it apply globally or to one platform or region? | Keep regional, edition-specific and platform-specific wording attached to the claim. |
For example, a publisher’s “2027 on console and PC” should not be reported as a simultaneous global launch if a platform page lists only one system. If an older trailer said “coming soon” and a newer newsroom post says “2027,” retain both dates but use 2027 as the current official target.

Steam and other PC storefronts
Look for an official Coming Soon page with the correct developer or publisher. Confirm the supported operating system and whether the listing is for the same title as the showcase reveal. Wishlist it, enable normal account notifications and treat the eventual release alert as confirmation that the publisher has activated the launch—not as evidence that an earlier rumor was accurate.
Xbox
Use the official Xbox showcase recap to verify what was shown and whether the presentation supplied a window, a date or a surprise launch. Then check the game’s own publisher and developer pages for changes. A recap can accurately describe the event while still leaving the game’s later schedule open.
PlayStation
Check the State of Play broadcast archive and recap, then the game’s official page and PlayStation store listing when available. State of Play includes announcements, trailers, updates and date reveals, so identify which of those actually occurred rather than assuming every trailer carried a launch commitment.

Multiple platforms
Track each platform separately. One version may receive a date while another remains listed only for a year or window. Keep the platform attached to every entry in your notes, and do not infer a date for an unlisted version from another platform’s announcement.
When it is safe to spend money or make plans
Do not buy hardware, reserve time off, book travel or place a preorder based only on an undated trailer. Wait for at least one of these authoritative signals:
- An official store listing gives a dated release.
- A preorder page is live on the platform or publisher’s approved store.
- The publisher or platform makes an explicit release-date announcement.
Even then, check the edition, platform, region and time zone. A date for a deluxe edition may differ from the standard edition; an early-access launch may not be the full release; and a date announced for one region may begin at a different local time elsewhere. Treat those qualifications as part of the date, not as fine print to be added later.

Assuming silence means cancellation
A gap in updates proves only that no new statement has appeared in the channels you checked. Continue to describe the game as announced and undated until an official source says it is delayed, cancelled or otherwise changing status.
Repeating a leak as a date
Leaks, database changes and retailer placeholders can be leads for further checking, but they are not release commitments. Keep them out of a factual status line unless the developer, publisher or platform confirms them.

A cinematic trailer can establish the project’s tone or existence without showing finished gameplay or a production milestone. Use the trailer to identify the game, not to infer how close it is to launch.

Ignoring regional and platform limits
“Releases in 2027” may refer to one platform, one market or one edition. Preserve the scope in every note and headline so readers do not mistake a partial announcement for a worldwide launch.
Checking only one social network
Official information may appear first in a publisher newsroom, a platform recap or a store listing. Cross-check the principal sources and record the latest dated statement rather than relying on whichever post your feed surfaced.

Use one row for each authoritative change:

This format separates what happened from what you think it means. If no row contains an exact date from an authoritative source, the game remains undated.

Return to the developer, publisher and platform pages and search their dated announcements. Check whether the official store page is still live, whether the listed platforms changed and whether the publisher has explicitly changed the project’s status. If those sources provide no answer, report the narrow fact: the game was announced, and no release date has been published in the latest official information you found.
Do not convert inactivity into a cancellation claim. A cancellation, delay or restart requires an attributable statement. Likewise, do not treat a new trailer without a date as proof that launch is imminent; it is an update to the project’s visibility, not necessarily its schedule.
