What to Do When Nintendo Switch 2 Won’t Recognize a microSD Express Card

If your Nintendo Switch 2 won’t recognize a microSD card, first check that it is a microSD Express card: Switch 2 does not support ordinary microSD cards for game storage. Then power the console off before removing the card, inspect the card and slot, and only consider formatting after backing up screenshots and videos. If multiple microSD Express cards fail, contact Nintendo service.

1. Check whether the card is compatible

Nintendo Switch 2 supports microSD Express cards only, with capacities up to 2TB. A standard microSD card that worked in the original Nintendo Switch cannot store or load Switch 2 games or save data. Nintendo says a standard microSD card can still be used to import screenshots and videos to Switch 2 system memory.

Check the card or its packaging for the microSD Express marking and stated capacity. If it is an ordinary microSD card, it is not a faulty Switch 2 card; it is the wrong type for Switch 2 game storage. If replacing it, look for a microSD Express card compatible with Switch 2. Nintendo says these cards are sold separately and does not endorse a particular retail model. See Nintendo’s compatibility guidance.

2. Power off and reseat the card safely

  1. Hold the console’s POWER button for at least three seconds.
  2. Select Power Options, then Power Off.
  3. Gently press the microSD card inward until it clicks, then slide it out.
  4. Check the card connectors and the console’s card slot for visible dirt or debris. Do not force the card or insert anything into the slot to clean it.
  5. Reinsert the card securely, then turn on the console and check whether it is recognized.

Nintendo warns that visible contamination may mean the card needs replacement and the console needs service. Follow Nintendo’s recognition troubleshooting guidance rather than trying aggressive cleaning methods.

Samsung microSD Express Card – 256GB for Nintendo Switch™ 2
  • Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
  • Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.

3. Check the first-use system update

Nintendo says an internet system update is required the first time a microSD Express card is used in Switch 2. If this is a new card or the first time you have used one with the console, connect to the internet and check for the required system update. This is a first-use requirement, not a guarantee that updating will resolve a card or console fault.

4. Format only after backing up

If the card is compatible and still is not recognized, formatting is a later troubleshooting option. Formatting deletes the information on the card, and Nintendo warns that the deleted information cannot be recovered. Before proceeding, copy screenshots and videos from the card to a computer.

  • DURABILITY YOU CAN COUNT ON: Cards are waterproof, temperature-proof, humidity-proof, drop-proof, shock-proof, magnetic-proof, x-ray proof, and wear-out proof [5].
  • HEAT MANAGEMENT REIMAGINED. SanDisk ThermAdapt helps keep devices from overheating with a specially designed enclosure and controller that uses dynamic adaptive thermal management.
  1. Open System Settings.
  2. Choose System, then Formatting Options.
  3. Select Format microSD Card and follow the instructions displayed on your console. Menu wording may vary by software version.

Formatting does not erase Switch 2 save data: Nintendo stores save data in console system memory, not on the microSD card. Downloaded software stored on the card can be downloaded again using the same Nintendo Account that purchased it. Nintendo explains these distinctions in its formatting instructions.

5. Replace the card or contact Nintendo service

If formatting does not restore detection, replace the card. If more than one microSD Express card cannot be read by the console, Nintendo directs you to contact service. Follow the instructions for your region and include one or more problematic cards for testing if Nintendo requests them.

  • Multiple Capacity Options – Available in 256GB, 512GB and 1TB options to suit your storage needs. Note that actual usable storage may be slightly less due to system formatting and a portion reserved for card management functions, which is a standard industry practice to ensure optimal performance and reliability.

The number of cards that fail helps distinguish the likely next step: an ordinary microSD card is incompatible for Switch 2 game storage, while a compatible Express card that remains unreadable after safe reseating and troubleshooting may be faulty. If multiple Express cards fail, the console may need service.
