Preview reporting says the game can retain information about your appearance, vehicle and companions, so the next move is to remove or change those identifying clues rather than simply drive farther away.
In practical terms, abandon or switch the vehicle when possible, consider splitting from your partner, and use alleys on foot during a reported three-star city pursuit. Police reportedly do not stay visible on the chase radar; using Focus is the described way to check their position. These recommendations come from pre-release comments and an extended-look sequence, not a final mechanics manual, so exact timers, search radii and controls remain unconfirmed.

Why the police can keep searching after you escape
A reported crime starts the response
According to Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson, a witness or an alarm has to report the crime before the wanted response begins. That means the game is not necessarily reacting to every suspicious action in the same way. The reported system starts with information reaching the police, then builds a search around what officers know about the people involved.
Do not treat this as proof that every camera, witness, alarm or mission event follows identical rules. The preview material establishes the witness-or-alarm trigger in the described situation, not a universal catalogue of every crime-reporting interaction.

Breaking sight is not the same as erasing your identity
The key change from older behavior is persistence. Nelson described the goal as moving beyond a system where “you could lose the cops instantaneously, and then they forget about you instantly.” In the reported extended-look sequence, police retain clues about clothing, faces, vehicles and the fact that the protagonists are together. A patrol that can no longer see you may still be searching for the same people.
That explains the most confusing moment: you turn a corner, the pursuing car disappears, but the wanted display remains. You have ended the immediate contact phase; you have not necessarily removed the information that lets police recognize you when they search nearby.
What the preview footage appears to show
Coverage of the extended look describes a six-slot wanted display. After direct contact is broken, four red stars are shown, which the report interprets as police still hunting rather than actively chasing. That interpretation is based on preview footage and should not be read as a confirmed final rule for every wanted level or mission.

The immediate response: a practical sequence
Use this order when the pursuit vehicle is no longer directly behind you but the wanted state persists:
- Stop treating distance as the solution. A broken line of sight is the beginning of an evasion phase, not confirmation that you are clear.
- Identify the clue police are likely using. If you are still in the vehicle seen during the crime, assume that vehicle is part of the description. If the protagonists are together, assume the pair is also identifiable as a unit.
- Change the vehicle when the situation allows. The reported sequence shows the protagonists switching vehicles, after which a police vehicle fails to recognize the new one. This is a demonstrated preview action, not a promise that every vehicle change clears the wanted state.
- Split up if police know you are together. Nelson says separating can lower police perception of the pair. It may reduce the amount of identifying information attached to any one search, but the reporting does not establish a universal reset.
- At three stars in the city, get off the streets. Leave the car and use alleys on foot instead of trying to outrun every unit in open traffic, unless you have an unusually fast vehicle or sports bike.
- Check with Focus. Police reportedly do not appear on the mini-map radar during a chase. The interview says they become visible when the player uses Focus, allowing you to judge whether a patrol is close before crossing an opening.
- Move cautiously until the display actually changes. Because the final timer and search rules are not documented, avoid returning to the crime scene or assuming a quiet street means the search is over.
Change the information police are using
Switching vehicles
A vehicle is more than transportation in the reported system; it can be a recognition cue. In the preview sequence, the protagonists change cars and a police vehicle fails to identify the replacement. That makes a vehicle swap the clearest practical response when the original car is conspicuous, damaged or associated with the reported crime.
Rank #2
Choose a change point that does not put you in direct view of officers. If you switch while a patrol is watching, the new vehicle may simply become another clue. The evidence supports changing the vehicle as an evasion tactic, but not a guaranteed instant removal of wanted status. Continue hiding after the swap and use Focus to check for nearby police.
Separating from your partner
Nelson also advises that splitting up can lower police perception of the pair. If officers are searching for two people moving together, separating gives them fewer simultaneous identifiers in one location. One character can draw less attention while the other takes a different route, provided the game allows the separation in that mission or activity.
This is not an instruction to abandon a required objective or assume the characters become invisible. The preview comments describe a reduction in police perception, not a guaranteed cancellation of the search. Keep the separation tactical and reunite only when the wanted state has genuinely changed.
Clothing and faces: what is known and what is not
Preview reporting indicates that police can retain information about clothing and faces as well as vehicles. However, the available comments do not provide a confirmed disguise procedure, clothing-change requirement or face-recognition threshold. Do not assume that visiting a wardrobe, changing an accessory or moving into a different outfit automatically clears the search. Treat appearance as a reason to stay hidden, not as a mechanic with a documented reset.
What to do during a three-star city pursuit
Why open streets become a bad bet
Nelson’s specific advice is that three stars in the city can be difficult to escape in a vehicle. Urban streets expose you to intersections, traffic and multiple approach routes, giving searching units more opportunities to reacquire the vehicle or identify the occupants. Repeatedly circling blocks may therefore prolong the problem instead of solving it.
The recommended alternative: alleys on foot
His stated recommendation is to get off the streets and go on foot into alleys. The practical logic is concealment: a person can turn through narrow passages and break the long sight lines that make a vehicle easy to track. Move from the car into cover, avoid running across broad roads when a patrol may be nearby, and use Focus before emerging from an alley.

Do not interpret “on foot” as an absolute rule. Nelson notes that a very fast vehicle or a sports bike may sometimes be the better choice. That is a situational exception, not a performance ranking. If your vehicle is slow, damaged or already recognized, the alley route is the safer reported option; if you have exceptional speed and a clear route, staying mobile may work.
A simple three-star decision tree
- Recognized or ordinary vehicle: leave it and use alleys on foot.
- Fast vehicle or sports bike with open escape routes: consider speed, but switch tactics if units regain contact.
- Partner nearby: separate if doing so is compatible with the objective.
- Radar appears empty: use Focus before assuming the path is clear.
Finding police when they are missing from the radar
The reported chase behavior intentionally makes the mini-map less informative: police do not appear on the radar during the chase. That means a blank radar is not evidence that no unit is close. It only tells you that the normal chase display is not showing them.
Use Focus as the reported detection method. Because the available material does not establish a universal button or platform-specific binding, check your in-game control settings for the Focus command rather than copying an input from another system. Activate it at pauses in cover, then wait for the police indicators described in the preview to appear before moving through an exposed area.
Focus should support your route choice, not replace concealment. A patrol can move while you are changing position, and the final game may alter how frequently or how precisely officers are shown.

Driving the same car in circles
Staying in the vehicle police already associate with the crime preserves the strongest known identifier. Circling the same blocks also gives searching units repeated chances to see you. Change vehicles or abandon the streets when the situation permits.
Assuming one hidden corner ends the wanted state
A corner can break direct sight without ending the search. Wait for the game’s actual state change and continue checking with Focus. There is no supported exact wait time to quote.
Rank #4
Running back toward the crime scene
Returning to the location where the witness or alarm reported the crime risks encountering the same search pattern. Move away through cover first; only return when the wanted state has clearly ended or the mission requires it.

Treating preview behavior as a final guarantee
The comments come from pre-release coverage of an extended-look sequence. Vehicle recognition, splitting behavior, wanted displays and Focus indicators may change before launch or vary by mission. Use the tactics as informed guidance, not as a promise that every encounter will reset identically.

What is still unknown about clearing the search
The available preview reporting does not establish a numeric radius, a universal timer, a cooldown, a guaranteed camera rule, or a standard re-entry response after you leave the search area. It also does not provide independently checked controls for every platform. Those gaps matter because a tactic that works in one mission may be tuned differently in another.
For now, the reliable principle is to separate “not currently being chased” from “fully clear.” Break contact, change the clues police know, use cover and Focus, and wait for the game to show that the wanted state has actually resolved. Recheck the final game’s behavior and official control guide after release, since pre-release systems can change.

The core lesson
When police in GTA 6 keep searching, hiding farther away is only one part of the solution. The reported design gives officers persistent memory, so remove the vehicle they recognize, separate companions when useful, and abandon open streets during a three-star city chase. Use alleys on foot and Focus to locate unseen units, but do not invent a timer or assume a blank radar means safety. Until the final mechanics are documented, treat every broken line of sight as an evasion phase rather than a clean escape.
