Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsProtect the world before troubleshooting: avoid deleting it, clearing game data, or uninstalling Minecraft until you have made a copy or confirmed a usable backup. Then check whether the crash affects one world or the whole game, and follow the recovery steps for your edition and device. A crash does not, by itself, prove that a world is corrupted.
1. Protect the world before changing anything
If you can still open the world, make a backup using the method available for your edition and device. Minecraft provides instructions for saving a backup of a Minecraft: Java Edition world. Bedrock backup steps vary by platform, so use the instructions for your specific device rather than assuming one file-copy method works everywhere.
Do not begin by deleting the world, clearing application data, or uninstalling the game. Minecraft warns that deleted files may not be recoverable through support, and its troubleshooting guidance recommends backing up before changing Java settings or removing Android game files. If you cannot access the world and have no backup, recovery is uncertain; do not assume a repair tool or support contact can restore it.
2. Work out what is crashing
Before changing settings, note the edition and device, what happens immediately before the failure, and whether the problem began after an update or after adding a pack or mod. These checks help narrow the cause; they are not a formal Minecraft diagnostic test.

- Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
- Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles

- Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
- Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only
- Only one world fails: focus first on that world’s packs, mods, or save history.
- Every world fails, or the game closes before a world loads: check the game installation, system updates, and—on Java Edition—mods and memory settings.
- A new test world works: the issue may be specific to the original world or the content it uses. This does not prove the save is corrupted.
- The game fails after a device or game update: check for any further game or system updates and consider whether an add-on or mod remains compatible.
3. Try low-risk checks first
- Close Minecraft and restart the device, then try the world again.
- Install available Minecraft and operating-system updates. On Windows, check whether the graphics driver needs an update.
- Close other resource-heavy applications where applicable, then test again.
- If the problem involves graphics on Bedrock for Windows, compare the PC with Minecraft’s minimum requirements and graphics troubleshooting guidance. Follow platform-specific instructions: menus and available settings differ by device.
4. If you use Bedrock add-ons, test them carefully
Resource or behavior packs can conflict, particularly when several are enabled. Back up the world first, then disable active packs one at a time and test after each change. If needed, create a separate test world with a pack to see whether the problem follows it. Minecraft’s add-on troubleshooting guidance explains how to manage packs.
Disabling a pack can change the world: mobs supplied by an add-on may disappear, and blocks supplied by it can be replaced with default blocks. Do not remove packs required by a template or adventure map without checking that content’s requirements.

5. If you use Java Edition, separate installation, mod, and memory problems
Test the installation without changing the world’s version
If the launcher crashes when starting Java Edition, Minecraft recommends creating a new installation using the same game version as the world. If that starts successfully, investigate mods or advanced settings in the old installation. Do this only after protecting the save, and do not open a world in a different version as a substitute for this test. See Minecraft’s Java Edition installation troubleshooting.
Review memory settings before editing JVM arguments
Minecraft links Java crashes, lag, and stuttering to memory allocation that does not match the computer’s available RAM or the game version’s requirements. Check the current Java memory-allocation guidance before changing JVM arguments. Save the original arguments and back up your worlds first. The page’s GB values are configuration examples, not proof that adding RAM will fix a particular crash; its default-allocation guidance also notes a change after 26.1-snapshot-2, so do not treat an older default as timeless.

Rule out mod conflicts
Temporarily test a clean installation after the save is protected. Mods are third-party software: Mojang does not create, review, or endorse them, and Minecraft Support says it cannot assist with issues caused by mod use. For a mod-specific compatibility problem, consult the mod’s author or community. See Minecraft’s guidance on Java mods.
6. Restore from the right kind of backup
Choose a restore method based on where the world is saved. A restored snapshot replaces the current world state; it is a rollback, not a merge. Builds and items added after the snapshot may be lost.

| Save type | What to do | Important condition or cost |
|---|---|---|
| Bedrock Realm | Go to Play → Realms → Realm Hub → World → Manual or Automatic saves, open the menu for the chosen save, then select Restore save. Follow Minecraft’s Bedrock Realms restore instructions. | Restoring returns the world to that save, including its builds and items; later progress is rolled back. |
| Java Realm | Open the Realm’s World Backups and restore the version you want, following Minecraft’s Java Realms backup instructions. | The restored version becomes the world’s state; changes after that point may be lost. |
| Xbox cloud save | On the Play screen, check whether the world is cloud-synced, cloud-only, or local-only. If a local save is out of date, use the resync steps in Minecraft’s Xbox cloud-save guidance. | Worlds sync automatically when the console is online and you are signed in. Confirm which copy is current before deleting a local copy. |
| Android Bedrock local copy | If the world’s File Storage Location is External, copy its folder from Android/data/com.mojang.minecraftpe/files/games/com.mojang/minecraftWorlds to a computer or another Android device. Use Minecraft’s Android world-copy instructions. |
This path applies under the stated External-storage condition, not universally across Android versions or storage settings. For Application storage, Minecraft’s guide points to Realms as a transfer method. |
7. Know when to stop and ask for platform-specific help
There is no single local-world recovery procedure established for every console, mobile device, and PC. If the steps above do not help, gather the edition, device, crash timing, any error text, and whether the issue affects one world or all worlds. Then use Minecraft’s official support request page to choose the relevant category. If the world is inaccessible and there is no known-good backup, recovery cannot be promised.
