First check whether the screen says the game is blacked out. A blackout usually reflects broadcast rights for your country or local market, not a playback fault; a stream that fails without a blackout message calls for help from the service carrying it. The right next step depends on the game, your location and the provider.
Check for a blackout before troubleshooting playback
Read the message shown by the streaming service. If it identifies a blackout, check the NHL’s current viewing guide for the authorized broadcaster in your country and market. Rights vary by game, season and location, so a subscription that carries one matchup may not carry another.
If there is no blackout message and the video will not start or continue, use the affected provider’s support channel for the specific app and device. NHL and partner services do not publish one universal troubleshooting sequence that applies to every technical failure.
What to do if the game is blacked out
Confirm the authorized outlet for your location
National and regional games can have different rights holders. The NHL’s 2026–27 guide lists U.S. national games across ESPN+, Hulu, TNT/Max, ESPN and ABC, and points viewers to local team broadcast information for regional games. For Canada, it lists Sportsnet services, Prime Video and TVA Sports for national games, with separate local and out-of-market distinctions. NHL.TV is listed through DAZN in the international territories shown on the guide. The territory list and rights can change, so check the current listing for the particular game rather than assuming a service carries every matchup.

If ESPN appears to have your location wrong
ESPN says blackout location is determined by your IP address. If you are watching on a mobile device and believe the blackout is mistaken, ESPN suggests trying Wi-Fi. For a blackout you believe is incorrect, contact ESPN through its support chatbot. Changing networks is a location check, not a way to override a valid blackout.
Watch later if live viewing is restricted
NHL subscription terms say a full-length replay of a blacked-out game is typically available no later than 24 hours after the game ends. That timing is stated as a typical service term, not a guarantee of immediate availability after the final buzzer. Check the provider’s game listing for the replay.

For NHL.TV on DAZN, the NHL identifies live blackouts in Austria, Germany, Switzerland and the United Kingdom when a game is carried by an NHL partner network in the viewer’s area; the game is available later as a full-game replay. Consult the current NHL.TV information and applicable service terms because blackout details may change.
If playback fails without a blackout message
Use the provider’s support route rather than assuming the cause is your device or home network. The official information available does not establish that restarting an app, switching devices or changing router settings will fix every outage.

Choose an authorized alternative for this game
Before switching services, confirm four things: your country and local market, whether the game is national or regional, whether you need live viewing or a replay, and whether the service supports your device. A service’s NHL coverage is not necessarily the same for every game or location. The NHL’s viewing guide and the relevant provider’s current listing are the best places to confirm the option for a specific matchup.
