A cannabis-themed game does not automatically receive one universal age rating. The answer depends on the rating authority, country, platform listing and what the game lets players do. A passing reference to cannabis, a visible dispensary, and an interactive drug mechanic that improves the player’s statistics can lead to materially different classifications. Read the age category together with the exact content descriptors for the edition and region you intend to play.
What an age rating actually tells you
Age categories are guidance about suitability, not a complete description of every scene or mechanic. In the United States, the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) uses age categories that suggest appropriateness: Everyone, Everyone 10+, Teen, Mature 17+, and Adults Only 18+. The category is only one part of the label. ESRB content descriptors identify material that may have contributed to the rating or may be of interest or concern to consumers.

- Use of Drugs: consumption or use of illegal drugs.
A game can mention cannabis without allowing the player to consume it. Conversely, an interactive use mechanic may be treated differently because the player initiates the action or receives a gameplay benefit. Never infer the descriptor from a game’s title or marketing alone; use the descriptor displayed on the specific store listing.

The clearest example: Weedcraft Inc. on Xbox
The Xbox listing for Klabater’s strategy and simulation game Weedcraft Inc. displays a Mature 17+ rating. Its listed descriptors are Use of Drugs and Strong Language. The store description presents a game about producing, breeding and selling weed in America.
That label answers more than “does the game contain cannabis?” It tells you that the listing’s rating authority treated drug use as a relevant content element, and that strong language is also part of the content profile. The cannabis theme does not describe everything a parent or player should consider.
Ratings can change by platform, release, downloadable content and territory. Treat the Xbox result as a listing-specific example rather than a rule for every version of Weedcraft Inc. or every cannabis-themed game. Check the rating panel on the store where you plan to buy or download the game.

Reference, depiction and interactive use are different
“Cannabis-themed” covers several kinds of content. The practical questions are whether cannabis is merely mentioned, shown as part of the setting, consumed by a character, or placed under the player’s control.
Narrative or environmental reference
A reference can be dialogue, a sign, a shop, a character’s occupation or an item visible in the world. The player may never consume a drug or receive a reward for it. In this situation, the relevant descriptor may be a reference-related label, or the material may be considered alongside other themes rather than as interactive drug use.

Depicted use without player control
A cutscene can show a character using cannabis while the player watches. That is more explicit than a passing reference, but it still differs from a mechanic the player can trigger. The rating authority may consider frequency, context, realism and whether the scene is glamorized, condemned or incidental.
Player-initiated use
When the player chooses an item or command that represents drug use, the interaction becomes part of gameplay. The authority may then examine whether use is optional, repeatable, rewarded or necessary to progress.

A cannabis-like item that increases ability points, improves food or water statistics, lowers temperature or otherwise helps the player creates an incentive or reward. Official Australian decisions show why that distinction matters: the mechanic can affect classification even when the item is fictional or cannabis-like.
How ESRB ratings are assigned
ESRB describes separate processes for physical and digital releases. For a physical retail game, the publisher submits a content questionnaire and gameplay footage that includes the most extreme content. At least three trained raters review the material and recommend an age category, content descriptors and interactive elements.
Digital games use a questionnaire process developed by the International Age Rating Coalition (IARC). Digital ratings do not receive ESRB Rating Summaries in the same way physical releases do. This difference explains why a digital storefront page may show a category and descriptors without the longer summary associated with a boxed release.

Downloadable content can receive a different rating when its material exceeds the rating of the core game. A cannabis-related expansion, update or mode therefore should be checked separately rather than assumed to inherit the base game’s label.

The Australian Classification Board’s examples illustrate one jurisdiction’s approach. They are not ESRB rules and should not be generalized to every country.
Life Is Strange: True Colors (2020–21 report)
The Board discussed a legal cannabis dispensary in the game’s Colorado setting. It reported that the drug references were unrelated to incentives or rewards and that the game contained no interactive illicit or proscribed drug use. The consumer advice also covered mature themes, violence, coarse language and online interactivity. This is an example of a cannabis presence that remains contextual rather than a player-controlled drug mechanic.
Wasteland 3 (2019–20 report)
The Board described a cannabis-like item that players could use to gain an ability-point benefit. It treated the use as related to incentives and rewards. A modified version that removed the interactive use was subsequently classified R 18+. The contrast demonstrates how changing one mechanic can alter the authority’s analysis.
DayZ (2018–19 report)
The Board reported that players could use a cannabis joint that improved food and water statistics and lowered temperature. Because the use acted as an incentive or reward, the version was refused classification in Australia. This is a historical, country-specific decision, not a prediction of how the ESRB or another national authority would rate the same content.

How to compare two cannabis-themed games
Use the same sequence for every game so that a familiar title or marketing description does not bias your judgment.

How to check a game’s rating before buying
- Open the exact platform listing. Use the storefront for the console, PC service or mobile device on which the game will run.
- Confirm the country or account region. The same title can display different categories, advice or terminology in different territories.
- Read the age category and every descriptor together. Do not stop at an icon or a single number.
- Check whether the page refers to the base game, an edition or downloadable content. Bundles and expansions can carry different content.
- Look for the game’s official content summary when available. For physical releases, an ESRB Rating Summary may provide more context; digital IARC-assigned listings may not have one.
- Compare the listing with the intended player’s needs. Consider language, violence, mature themes and online features in addition to cannabis content.
Common mistakes when interpreting cannabis ratings
Assuming every cannabis game is Adults Only
ESRB categories range from Everyone through Adults Only, and the presence of cannabis alone does not determine the category. The descriptor and context matter. Weedcraft Inc.‘s cited Xbox listing is Mature 17+, not Adults Only.
Treating a descriptor as a scene-by-scene review
Descriptors are concise signals, not exhaustive plot summaries. “Use of Drugs” tells you that drug use is present or relevant to the rating, but not how often it occurs, who performs it or whether it affects statistics.
Transferring an Australian decision to the United States
The Life Is Strange: True Colors, Wasteland 3 and DayZ examples come from Australian reports. Their reasoning is useful for understanding the role of incentives, but it does not establish an ESRB policy or a worldwide standard.
Ignoring non-drug content
The cited Weedcraft Inc. listing includes Strong Language as well as Use of Drugs. Other games may list violence, mature themes or online interactivity. Read the complete panel.

Relying on an old screenshot or a different edition
Storefront metadata can differ after updates, regional releases or downloadable content. Verify the listing currently attached to the edition you are considering.
What parents and players can reasonably conclude
If a listing says Drug Reference, expect references or images but do not assume the player can use cannabis. If it says Use of Drugs, expect consumption or use of an illegal drug to be represented, while recognizing that the descriptor alone does not specify whether the action is interactive or rewarded. For that detail, consult the store description, official content summary and reliable editorial descriptions, then check the platform and region.
For a game built around cultivation or a cannabis business, the theme may be central without every moment depicting consumption. For a survival or role-playing game, a single cannabis-like item can matter more if it improves statistics or progression. The most useful judgment comes from combining the authority, category, descriptors and gameplay role instead of treating “cannabis-themed” as one uniform content type.
