Sony’s documented backward-compatibility feature is centered on PS4 games, while the official PS2 Classics catalogue is a curated selection. A jailbroken PS5 can potentially run PS2 games through the community project PS5SX2, but that is unofficial emulation with significant prerequisites, changing firmware requirements and no promise that every game will work.
As of October 2026, PS5SX2’s maintainer describes it as a native PCSX2 port, tested in development on a PS5 Pro running firmware 11.40. You must supply your own PS2 BIOS and games, and current reporting says physical DVD-format PS2 discs can work while CD-format discs cannot be read by the PS5 optical drive. Treat the project as experimental rather than as a dependable replacement for a PS2.

What Sony officially supports on PS5
Sony’s official compatibility guidance covers the overwhelming majority of PS4 titles on PS5. It does not establish broad, native PS2 compatibility, and Sony separately states that PS3 discs are not supported. Inserting an original PS2 disc into an unmodified PS5 therefore is not a supported way to play it.

- Disc only. Original case and manual not included. Will come packaged in a generic case.
- This renewed game has been cleaned, tested, and shows minimal wear.
This distinction matters before you change any firmware: if your target title is already available as an official Classic, that route avoids the technical and account-related uncertainty of a jailbreak. If it is not, you are choosing between unofficial emulation and another piece of hardware.
What PS5SX2 is—and what it is not
PS5SX2 is a community-developed, native port of the open-source PCSX2 emulator for jailbroken PS5 consoles. It is not a Sony feature, a licensed commercial product or a compatibility guarantee. The project’s own documentation calls it a passion project and warns users to expect rough edges.
Its advertised capabilities include resolution scaling up to six times, image filters, configurable settings, save states and per-game patches. Those are project features, not assurances of identical performance across the PS2 library. Emulation can vary by title, video mode, rendering option and the PS5 hardware and firmware combination being used.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

The maintainer says development is performed on a PS5 Pro running firmware 11.40. Other PS5 models and system software versions are described as untested. That statement is a development baseline, not a jailbreak compatibility chart. A PS5 Slim, launch-model PS5 or different firmware may have a different exploit situation or may not run the current build at all.
Requirements you need before considering it
PS5SX2’s documentation expects a technically capable user to assemble several components. The project does not bundle the copyrighted material needed to operate games.
Rank #2
- Drive through the largest GTA environment ever -- The game has three cities players can explore, for a gaming area 5 times larger than Vice City
- Recruit new characters into a street gang and take over by leading drive-by shootings against rivals Steal all-new vehicles, including bicycles
- Improved fighting elements -- smoother hand-to-hand combat, plus the ability to hold a weapon in each hand
- New graphics elements as cars get dirty and even rust, the longer you drive them
- Advanced role-playing elements -- Unlike previous GTA characters, Carl can swim and he needs to eat to survive
- A jailbroken PS5: The console must be on a system-software version and hardware configuration for which a current jailbreak and the required homebrew environment exist. No dependable, firmware-by-firmware chart is established by the project information summarized here.
- The PS5SX2 Helper payload and supporting components: These are part of the project’s setup rather than features included in Sony’s operating system.
- ShadowMountPlus: The documentation lists it as a supporting component used by the emulator workflow.
- Your own PS2 BIOS dump: PS5SX2 supplies no BIOS. The expected source is a PS2 console you own or otherwise have lawful access to.
- Your own games: The project’s file-oriented instructions refer to ISO images. No games or keys are included.
- Storage and transfer equipment: You need a way to move your BIOS and game files to the console and enough storage for the titles you intend to use. The project documentation does not promise that every storage device or file layout will work without adjustment.
PCSX2’s FAQ gives the same basic ownership model: an original PS2 supplies the BIOS, and games are supplied by the user, either from a disc or as dumped ISO/CSO images. Rules governing copying and personal backups differ by jurisdiction and circumstance. The available project material does not resolve those legal questions, so do not treat a technical dumping procedure as legal advice.
Firmware and jailbreak uncertainty
Do not update or downgrade your PS5 solely because a forum post, video or old guide mentions a particular firmware. Jailbreak exploits change quickly, and installing a newer system update can remove an exploit; attempting a downgrade can be impossible or can leave the console unusable. Conversely, staying on an old version without confirming the current tool chain may not give you a workable setup.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesBefore making any change, identify the exact PS5 model family and current system-software version, then consult current, reputable compatibility information for that combination. The PS5SX2 development note only tells you where the maintainer tested; it does not tell you that your console is eligible.
The sources available for this topic do not establish reliable current consequences for PlayStation Network access, account standing, warranty coverage or the legality of modifying a console in every country. Consider those unresolved issues rather than assuming that a jailbreak is harmless or reversible. Keep the console’s recovery options and your personal data in mind, and do not proceed if losing access to normal online services would be unacceptable.
How the playback workflow fits together
The exact exploit and payload sequence is volatile, so a responsible preparation plan is more useful than a frozen button-by-button jailbreak guide. The following sequence shows the dependencies without claiming that one set of menus works on every firmware.

- Capcom Classics Collection includes the following features -
- Experience more than 20 groundbreaking and revolutionary games of their time on one disk
- Hundreds of hours of nostalgic gameplay
- Enjoy a wealth of added features including original artwork, remixed music and playing tips
- Confirm the game and route. Check the exact title, region and format. Look first for an official PS2 Classic. If that is unavailable, establish whether you already own a suitable PS2, an early PS3 model with PS2-disc support, or a computer capable of running PCSX2.
- Record the console state. Note the PS5 model and system-software version before connecting it to an update. Verify current exploit and homebrew support for that exact combination from up-to-date technical documentation.
- Decide whether the risk is acceptable. A jailbreak can affect normal system behavior and online use, and PS5SX2 itself is experimental. If you need a trouble-free living-room player, stop here and use supported hardware or software instead.
- Prepare lawful source material. Obtain a BIOS dump from your own PS2 and dump games you own into a format the current PS5SX2 documentation supports. Keep an untouched archival copy; troubleshooting should not require repeatedly redumping the original.
- Set up the homebrew dependencies. Follow the current PS5SX2 instructions for the jailbreak environment, PS5SX2 Helper and ShadowMountPlus. Component names and installation details can change, so do not substitute an old tutorial for the project’s current documentation.
- Transfer and test one title. Start with a single game and its matching BIOS region where applicable. Confirm that the emulator can see the files before adding a large library; this isolates storage, permission and mounting problems.
- Tune per game. Begin at conservative rendering settings, then try resolution scaling, filters, patches and save states. Record settings that work so an update or reinstall does not force you to rediscover them.
This is a dependency chain, not a promise that every step will succeed on your console. If the first step—current jailbreak support for your exact firmware—is uncertain, buying discs or preparing ISO files will not solve the underlying problem.

PS5SX2’s project documentation describes games in terms of user-supplied ISO files. Reporting dated October 10, 2026 additionally says the emulator can use original PS2 DVD discs, including discs from different regions, as well as several image formats. That makes a DVD-format game potentially useful even when you have not created an ISO.
The optical drive has an important limitation: PS5 drives cannot read standard CDs. Some PS2 releases used CD media rather than DVD, so those titles cannot be played from the physical disc through the PS5 drive. You would need a supported image workflow, and compatibility would still depend on the individual game and the emulator build.
“DVD supported” does not mean “every DVD title works.” Region behavior, dual-layer media, copy protection, game-specific timing and emulator bugs can all affect results. Treat physical-disc support as an input option, not as evidence of complete library coverage.
What performance claims mean in practice
Six-times resolution scaling can make 3D games look substantially sharper than their original output, and filters can change the appearance of texture and geometry. Save states and per-game patches can be convenient for titles that lack modern quality-of-life features. None of these settings fixes an emulation defect or guarantees that a game reaches full speed.

Native emulation also does not recreate every behavior of original hardware perfectly. A game may boot but exhibit broken audio, incorrect effects, missing video modes, controller quirks or instability when a high scaling factor is enabled. Test at default settings first, change one option at a time and keep a known-good configuration for the title.
“Expect rough edges.” — PS5SX2 project maintainers.
That warning is the most useful performance expectation available. There is no verified, comprehensive percentage of PS2 games that work, and the available sources do not provide a title-by-title compatibility list suitable for a universal claim.
Alternatives to modifying a PS5
| Route | What it offers | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Official PS2 Classics on PS5 | Supported downloads for selected titles. | The catalogue is curated rather than the complete PS2 library; availability can vary by region. |
| PS5SX2 on a jailbroken PS5 | Community emulation, BIOS and ISO workflows, and reported DVD-disc support. | Requires an eligible jailbreak, several homebrew components and user-supplied material; the tested configuration is limited and the project warns of rough edges. |
| Original PS2 | Original hardware and direct use of PS2 discs, including CD releases. | You must acquire and maintain the console and connect it to a modern display setup. |
| PCSX2 on a computer | Established PC emulation using your own BIOS and games. | Requires a suitable computer and a separate setup; it does not turn the PS5 into a PS2 player. |
| Selected early PS3 models | Some specific early models can play PS2 discs. | Support is model-specific. Verify the exact model before buying, rather than assuming every PS3 has the feature. |
Compare these routes against the exact game you want, whether you need a physical disc, the hardware you already own, your tolerance for configuration and the consequences of losing ordinary PS5 online functionality. There is no universal winner.
Common failure points and sensible responses
The console cannot run the required homebrew
Recheck the model and firmware against current documentation. Do not force an update or downgrade to match an old tutorial. If no current path exists, use an official Classic, original hardware or PCSX2 instead.

- Mortal Kombat: Armageddon PS2
The emulator reports a missing BIOS
PS5SX2 includes no BIOS. Confirm that your own dump is complete, placed where the current build expects it and appropriate for the game’s region. Downloading a random BIOS package does not satisfy the project’s stated requirement and can create compatibility or legal problems.
A physical disc is not detected
Determine whether the disc is DVD or CD. A CD-format PS2 release cannot be read by the PS5 optical drive, regardless of emulator settings. For a DVD, check the current build’s supported formats and try a user-created image if that workflow is available to you.
A game boots but behaves incorrectly
Return to default resolution and filtering, disable patches, and test again. Then change one setting at a time and look for a title-specific note in the current project documentation. A successful boot is not proof of complete playability.
You need dependable online PS5 use
Do not treat a modified console as your only PS5 if access to normal services is essential. The available sources do not define current PSN or account outcomes, so that risk must be considered unresolved rather than assumed safe.
A practical decision rule
- Choose the official route when your game is in the current Classics catalogue and you value predictable support.
- Choose original hardware when you have many discs, especially CD-format releases, and want the fewest emulation variables.
- Choose PCSX2 when you already have a capable computer and prefer an emulator environment separate from your everyday console.
- Consider PS5SX2 only if your exact PS5 firmware and model have a current, credible jailbreak path, you can supply your own BIOS and games, and you accept experimental behavior and uncertain online consequences.
Buying a PS2 disc does not supply the BIOS, and a DVD disc is not evidence that its particular game will run correctly. Confirm the media format and the target title before spending money.
Bottom line before you proceed
Jailbreaking a PS5 solely for PS2 games is a technical experiment, not an officially supported upgrade. The potential payoff is high-resolution community emulation on hardware you already own, but the prerequisites are strict: an eligible jailbreak, helper components, a BIOS dumped from your own PS2 and games you provide yourself. The project’s documented test setup is a PS5 Pro on firmware 11.40, other configurations are untested, and the maintainers explicitly caution that rough edges remain.
For a single well-supported title, check the official Classics catalogue first. For a broad physical collection or CD-based games, original PS2 hardware remains the straightforward option. Proceed with PS5SX2 only after verifying your exact console state and accepting that compatibility, firmware support and online-service consequences can change.
