Start with Farscape if you want the closest premise match to Stargate’s displaced-human viewpoint and alien team chemistry. Choose Star Trek: Discovery for a starship crew pursuing a galaxy-scale mystery, or The Expanse for a more grounded solar-system conspiracy. Each keeps exploration and group problem-solving in view, but they differ in how episodic, serialized, political, and serious their stories are.
What makes a good Stargate follow-up?
The official franchise guide describes Stargate as a story of specialized human teams using alien portals to explore other worlds. Across SG-1, Atlantis, and Universe, that setup combines military missions, ancient mythology, modern science, first-contact encounters, and the practical problem of getting home or keeping a team alive. The shows below are useful matches because they preserve some of those functions, not because they are interchangeable.

- Team-led stories: A recognizable group makes decisions, argues, improvises, and shares the consequences.
- Exploration: The setting expands through unfamiliar planets, species, stations, or regions of space.
- Continuing adventure: Characters and mysteries carry forward instead of resetting completely after every mission.
- A clear travel engine: A portal, ship, or investigation gives the story a reason to keep moving.
Stargate itself shifts between episodic missions and longer arcs. Your best next choice depends on which side you want more of: a stranded outsider among aliens, a starship’s discovery mandate, or a serious mystery unfolding through human politics.

Farscape: the closest match for a stranded human and alien crew
Farscape is the clearest premise match when the part of Stargate you miss most is an Earth person suddenly operating inside a much larger, stranger universe. The Jim Henson Company’s series description sends astronaut John Crichton across a thousand galaxies and into an alien conflict. He is hunted and begins a quest for home, placing the emotional problem of displacement at the center of the adventure.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Why it fits
Crichton is not visiting a new world from a secure base. He is travelling with beings he did not choose, learning unfamiliar rules while threats close in. That changes the team dynamic: cooperation is necessary, but trust has to be built among people with different histories and motives. For a viewer who likes the friction and loyalty of a specialized Stargate unit, the appeal is the same basic question—how does a small group function when every mission introduces risks no one can fully predict?
Official episode synopses for the living ship Moya describe alien threats, stops at planets, and repeated attempts to find a route home. Those elements provide a recognizable adventure rhythm while the larger pursuit keeps the journey connected. The result is a useful bridge between a mission-of-the-week show and a continuing escape story.
How much viewing is involved?
The Jim Henson Company lists 88 one-hour episodes and a two-part miniseries, with the series dated 1999–2004. Treat the miniseries as two 90-minute episodes when planning a watch-through. Peacock’s listing has presented four seasons, but streaming catalogs are regional and change over time; check your local listing for the seasons and miniseries before starting.

Choose it when
- You want the human point of view to remain central while the surrounding culture is thoroughly alien.
- You prefer a travelling crew and recurring encounters to a single fixed headquarters.
- You are comfortable with a long run that develops its relationships and conflicts over many episodes.
Choose another title first if your priority is a polished starship mission with a formal exploration mandate or a tightly grounded political thriller. Farscape is the strongest match for the “stranger in an alien universe” axis, not a claim that it is universally superior.
Star Trek: Discovery: a galaxy-scale search aboard a starship
Star Trek: Discovery is the natural choice when you want the exploration apparatus to be the main character: a starship, a crew, and a mission that reaches far beyond one planet. StarTrek.com describes the fifth and final season as a crew-led search across the galaxy for an ancient power, with dangerous competitors pursuing it. The same official series material frames earlier voyages around discovering new worlds and lifeforms.
Why it fits
The overlap with Stargate lies in organized exploration. A crew leaves familiar territory, encounters societies and phenomena it cannot predict, and has to combine specialist knowledge under pressure. The scale is different from a portal team’s visit to one world: the search extends across the galaxy, and the central mystery links the crew’s individual missions into a larger route.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
This is a better fit than Farscape if you want the group to operate as a formal expedition rather than as fugitives. It is also a better fit than The Expanse if “new worlds and lifeforms” is the feature you most want foregrounded. The story is serialized enough that the search itself matters, so begin with the first season rather than jumping directly into the final one.
What is established about the run?
The official series page identifies five seasons and calls season five the final season. Its availability notes list seasons one through four on different services in different territories, including Paramount+ in several listed countries and other services elsewhere. Those notes do not establish current access for every season or every country. Streaming rights are volatile, so verify the season-level listing in your market immediately before viewing.
Choose it when
- You want a large crew, a starship, and a mission that can move from one end of the galaxy to another.
- You enjoy an ancient-power mystery layered over exploration and pursuit.
- You want a completed five-season series rather than an ongoing release schedule.
If your favorite Stargate episodes are compact, self-contained field missions, Discovery’s continuing search may feel more serialized. If you want one human outsider trying to get home with an improvised group, start with Farscape instead.

The Expanse: a more political solar-system mystery
The Expanse answers the “what next?” question from a different angle. Universal’s complete-series synopsis calls it a noir thriller set two hundred years in the future. A missing-person case leads a detective across the solar system and toward a major conspiracy. The distributor categorizes the series as science fiction, drama, action, mystery, and adventure.
Why it fits—and where it does not
The connection to Stargate is the combination of a mobile team, dangerous unknowns, and a mystery that grows as the characters cross human-controlled space. Instead of visiting a fresh planet in each mission, the story follows an investigation through a politically divided solar system. Power, jurisdiction, and competing interests shape the danger as much as alien discovery does.

It is the recommendation for viewers who want the sense of a widening space mystery and a crew forced to cooperate under pressure, but who are happy to trade portal travel and frequent alien encounters for a more grounded human conflict.

Viewing options and edition details
Universal lists The Expanse: The Complete Series as a six-season set, with a 2023 release listing. The page offers digital purchase plus Blu-ray and DVD formats. A digital purchase is a limited license subject to the retailer’s terms; ownership, access, and device rules can differ from a disc set. Streaming availability and prices are not established by those edition details, so check current local listings separately.
Choose it when
- You want a mystery to pull several characters through the solar system.
- You prefer political and investigative pressure to a sequence of independent away missions.
- You want a complete six-season run and value a physical Blu-ray or DVD option.
Start elsewhere if the essential appeal is meeting a new alien civilization every week. The Expanse is the grounded, conspiracy-driven branch of this watch-next path.

Star Trek: Enterprise
Paramount+’s science-fiction category describes Star Trek: Enterprise as taking place at the dawn of human deep-space exploration. That premise makes it relevant to viewers who want humanity learning how to operate beyond its established territory. The available category description is brief, so use it as a starting point rather than assuming it has the same team structure or arc design as Stargate.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Star Trek: Deep Space Nine
The same Paramount+ category describes Deep Space Nine as being set on a space station near a gateway to far reaches of space. Its gateway-centered location gives exploration stories a stable hub, a useful option if you like the contrast between a home base and missions beyond it. The concise category synopsis does not provide enough detail here to map every tonal or structural similarity, so verify the show’s specific emphasis before choosing it for a particular mood.
Pick by the kind of adventure you want
| If you want… | Start with… | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| A stranded Earth astronaut learning to survive with aliens | Farscape | Crichton is displaced across a thousand galaxies, hunted, and trying to get home with Moya’s crew. |
| A formal starship mission and a galaxy-wide objective | Star Trek: Discovery | The crew searches for an ancient power while pursuing new worlds, lifeforms, and dangerous rivals. |
| A serious investigation through human space | The Expanse | A missing-person case expands into a solar-system conspiracy in a two-hundred-years-ahead setting. |
| Humanity’s first era of deep-space exploration | Star Trek: Enterprise | Its official category premise places the action at the beginning of human deep-space travel. |
| A station near a gateway to distant regions | Star Trek: Deep Space Nine | Its official category description centers a space station beside a route to far reaches of space. |
How to avoid the most common viewing mismatch
- Decide whether you need aliens immediately. Pick Farscape for an alien crew and repeated unfamiliar encounters. Pick The Expanse if a human political mystery is acceptable.
- Decide how much serialization you want. Discovery and The Expanse organize their central searches and mysteries across continuing episodes. Farscape also develops long arcs, but its premise repeatedly sends the crew into distinct encounters.
- Decide whether “home” is the engine. Crichton’s return quest is explicit. Discovery is driven by a galaxy-scale search, while The Expanse is driven by an investigation and conspiracy.
- Check the edition or service in your country. The cited availability pages are territory-specific and can change. Confirm the exact seasons, miniseries, disc region, or digital terms before paying.
What to know before you press play
- Farscape has a substantial commitment: 88 one-hour episodes plus a two-part miniseries.
- Star Trek: Discovery has five seasons, with the fifth identified as the final season; service listings for seasons one through four vary by territory.
- The Expanse is available as a complete six-season package in the distributor’s digital, Blu-ray, and DVD listings, but a digital purchase is licensed rather than an unrestricted ownership transfer.
- No cited source establishes a universal streaming home, current price, or worldwide stock for any of these titles. Local catalogs and retailer terms are the deciding information.
The short answer
Watch Farscape first for the most direct Stargate-style combination of a displaced human, alien companions, danger on unfamiliar worlds, and an ongoing journey home. Move to Star Trek: Discovery when you want that exploratory impulse enlarged into a galaxy-spanning starship search. Choose The Expanse when the part you want to keep is the team, the widening mystery, and the danger of space—but with politics and investigation replacing regular portal expeditions.
