Do you need to watch the TV series or the recap films?
You need the original story, but you do not need to watch it twice. The 2011 series is the original version; Beginnings and Eternal retell that story across two movies. Choose the series for its episodic presentation, or the films if you prefer a shorter movie-based catch-up. Either way, continue with Rebellion.

The Japanese promotional description presents the movie as a legitimate sequel to Rebellion and a new beginning. That wording reinforces the viewing order: Rebellion is not an optional detour if you want to follow the direct continuation (official film site).
It is possible to understand the broad order without learning the details of Rebellion’s ending: the official framing makes clear that the new movie follows it, and the synopsis itself signals that the prior film matters.
