What VPS Size Do You Need for 500 Concurrent Users? A Practical Sizing Guide

By VGSources Team 10 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a first production test, start with a dedicated-CPU VPS offering about 4 vCPUs, 8 GB RAM, fast NVMe storage and a 1 Gbps network port. Treat that as an engineering hypothesis, not a promise that 500 people will fit. A cache-heavy site may need less; dynamic pages, large responses, real-time connections, background jobs or a busy database may need substantially more.

The only reliable answer comes from replaying your own workload at gradually increasing concurrency while watching latency, errors, CPU, memory, storage and database behavior. Concurrent-user count alone is not a capacity specification.

What 500 concurrent users actually tells you

Concurrent users are sessions that are active at the same time, not a fixed number of requests per second. One user might download a page, wait 30 seconds and click again; another might trigger several database-heavy requests every second. Both count as concurrent users, but they create very different loads.

Capacity depends on the application workload, request rate, response size, code efficiency, caching, database queries, connection lifetime, CPU, memory, storage, network bandwidth and the latency your audience will accept. Microsoft describes capacity planning as determining the session hosts and resources needed to meet expected workload demands, and recommends a pilot that increases load gradually while monitoring CPU, paging, disk and network indicators.

Define the workload before choosing a plan

  • Interaction pattern: distinguish mostly idle logged-in sessions from continuously active users, WebSocket clients, game lobbies or polling dashboards.
  • Request mix: record the proportion of cached reads, dynamic page renders, API calls, uploads, downloads and writes.
  • Response size: a 20 KB JSON response and a 5 MB media response consume very different network and memory resources.
  • Performance target: set an objective for p95 and p99 latency, error rate and availability instead of declaring success merely because the server remains online.
  • Peak shape: test bursts such as a match starting, a livestream ending or a notification campaign, not only a smooth average.

A VPS can be technically connected to 500 sessions while delivering an unacceptable experience. Size for the slowest important operation at peak load, with room for deployments, backups, monitoring and short traffic surges.

A sensible starting VPS configuration

For a conventional web or game-community application with 500 active users, a dedicated-CPU VPS with approximately 4 vCPUs, 8 GB of RAM, NVMe storage and 1 Gbps networking is a reasonable first test configuration. The specification is deliberately conservative enough to provide CPU and memory headroom while remaining small enough to measure and resize.

Why dedicated CPU is the starting point

Shared vCPUs can perform well when neighboring tenants are quiet, but their throughput and latency may vary when the host is busy. Dedicated CPU allocations reduce that uncertainty and make load-test results easier to reproduce. Providers expose different isolation models: some distinguish shared and dedicated CPU products, while others document dedicated cores and fully reserved RAM in higher-performance VPS lines. Compare the actual guarantee, not just the vCPU label.

Why 8 GB is not a user-to-RAM formula

RAM is consumed by the operating system, web server, runtime, application workers, caches, database buffers and temporary allocations. Apache HTTP Server documentation calls RAM the single biggest hardware issue affecting web-server performance and recommends measuring the average process size when calculating memory. Eight gigabytes may be comfortable for a stateless application with an external database, but a local database, large in-memory cache or many resident workers can exhaust it quickly.

What fast NVMe and 1 Gbps networking contribute

NVMe reduces storage latency for database reads, log writes, session files and deployment operations. It does not fix inefficient queries or an undersized database buffer pool, but it lowers the time each storage operation occupies a worker. A 1 Gbps port provides useful burst capacity for APIs, patches and asset delivery; your sustained throughput may still be limited by the provider, virtualization layer, remote users or the VPS plan’s traffic policy.

Workloads that can fit below or exceed the baseline

Light, cache-heavy site

If most pages are served from a reverse-proxy or application cache, sessions are short-lived and the database handles few writes, CPU and RAM demand can be lower than the starting configuration. Validate cache-hit ratios and test cache misses separately; a site that looks light during a warm-cache test can collapse when an invalidation event sends every request to the application.

Dynamic pages and API-heavy applications

Server-side rendering, authentication, inventory checks, leaderboards and personalized responses keep CPU and database work on the critical path. More workers can increase throughput until CPU, database connections or memory become saturated. Raising worker counts after that point usually increases contention rather than capacity.

Real-time connections and game services

Long-lived WebSocket or TCP connections consume file descriptors, connection state and per-process memory even when traffic is low. A game lobby service may therefore need more RAM and connection capacity than a page-view workload with the same number of users. Measure connection counts, message rates and fan-out, and verify kernel and reverse-proxy limits.

Large downloads, uploads or media

Large responses consume network bandwidth and may occupy workers unless they are offloaded to a dedicated object or edge-delivery layer. Uploads also use temporary disk space and can create write bursts. Test the largest realistic transfers concurrently with normal requests.

Background jobs

Queues, video transcoding, search indexing, scheduled reports and backups compete with foreground traffic. Reserve CPU, RAM, disk I/O and network capacity for them, or run workers on a separate VPS so a job spike cannot starve user requests.

Published examples show why there is no universal number

Two vendor examples illustrate how dramatically requirements change with the workload and measurement conditions.

Example Stated workload CPU RAM Storage Network How to interpret it
Oracle Capacity Planning Guide 500 peak logged-in users 2 CPUs 2 GB Not stated 100 Mbps network card for up to 500 users A planning-matrix example, not a guarantee for every application or latency target.
Syncplify V6 documentation 500 concurrent clients under intermittent heavy load in a laboratory example 16 CPU cores 4 GB 1.5 GB Not stated Heavy protocol activity can demand far more CPU; the documentation warns that minimum hardware does not guarantee good performance.

The Oracle and Syncplify figures are not contradictory. They measure different software, protocols and load patterns. Use them as evidence that a user count cannot substitute for a workload model.

How to size each resource

CPU and vCPUs

CPU saturation appears as rising run queues, longer request times and lower throughput. Four dedicated vCPUs are a practical test point for many web applications, but CPU-heavy encryption, compression, scripting, game simulation or protocol processing can require more. Examine per-core utilization: an application limited to one busy thread can be slow even when total CPU usage appears moderate.

Memory and swap

Track working-set memory, cache growth, per-process RSS, available memory and swap activity. Swap is a safety valve, not capacity. Once active application pages are swapped, latency becomes unpredictable. Leave headroom for deploys, log rotation, package updates and traffic bursts rather than allocating every gigabyte to workers or database buffers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Storage capacity and I/O

Capacity must include the operating system, application, logs, database files, temporary uploads, backups and rollback images. Monitor latency and IOPS, not only free space. A small disk with low latency can outperform a larger but slower volume for transactional workloads. Keep backups off the VPS so a full disk or host failure does not remove both the live data and its recovery copy.

Network throughput

Calculate peak egress and ingress from real response sizes and request rates. Check whether the advertised port speed is burstable or sustained, whether traffic is shaped, and whether the provider counts inbound and outbound traffic differently. A 100 Mbps interface may be adequate for small responses, while large assets or simultaneous downloads can consume it quickly.

Database resources

Measure database CPU, buffer-cache hit rate, active connections, lock waits, query latency, reads and writes. A web tier can remain mostly idle while a poorly indexed query saturates database CPU or storage. Size connection pools deliberately; opening hundreds of database connections can exhaust RAM and increase contention without improving throughput.

Can a 4-core, 8 GB VPS handle 500 users?

It can, if the application is efficient, the workload is moderate, caching is effective and the database remains within its latency budget. It may fail the same user count when pages are dynamic, requests are frequent, responses are large, or background jobs run on the same machine. Treat the configuration as a testable starting hypothesis, not a contractual capacity.

Run the application in an environment that matches production software versions, extensions, database schema, cache state and TLS settings. A synthetic test that requests one static URL cannot validate a site whose users perform logins, writes, searches and real-time updates.

Do you need a separate database server?

Not automatically. Keeping the database on the same VPS reduces network hops and can be cost-effective for a small, well-understood workload. It also means web workers, database buffers, backups and jobs compete for the same CPU, RAM and storage, and a single host failure takes down every tier.

Keep web and database together when

  • The database is modest, queries are indexed and measured database CPU and I/O remain well below saturation during peak tests.
  • You need the lowest operational complexity and can restore the entire host quickly from tested backups.
  • The application and database have predictable growth and no heavy reporting or batch jobs.

Split the database when

  • Database CPU, I/O latency, lock waits or memory pressure is the first bottleneck while web resources remain available.
  • You need to scale web workers horizontally without multiplying database copies.
  • Backups, maintenance, failover isolation or independent scaling justify the additional network and operational overhead.
  • Analytics, search, queues or media processing create competing workloads.

A separate database VPS does not remove the need to size the database. It adds network latency, connection security, backup coordination and another failure domain to operate. Make the split in response to measured contention or a clear availability requirement.

How to compare VPS plans beyond headline numbers

Check Questions to ask
CPU isolation Are vCPUs shared, burstable or dedicated? Is a baseline or percentage guarantee documented?
Memory policy Is RAM reserved, oversubscribed or reclaimable? What happens before and during swapping?
Storage Is it NVMe? Are latency, IOPS, RAID and volume limits stated? Can storage be expanded without migration?
Network What is the port speed, sustained throughput, traffic allowance and egress policy?
Backups Are backups provider-managed, application-consistent and restorable to another location? What retention and recovery-time objective apply?
Scaling Can you resize vertically, add instances, attach a load balancer or place the database separately?
Observability Can you obtain per-instance CPU steal time, disk latency, network throughput and memory metrics?

Two plans with identical vCPU and RAM labels can behave differently because of CPU generation, virtualization overhead, storage queues and noisy-neighbor isolation. Favor documented guarantees and measurements from your region over marketing labels.

A validation procedure that produces a defensible answer

  1. Capture a production workload profile. Record requests per second, endpoint mix, response sizes, cache-hit ratios, active connections, database queries and background-job schedules during normal and peak periods.
  2. Build a representative test environment. Use the same operating-system image, runtime, web server, database version, indexes, configuration, TLS mode and monitoring agents planned for production. Populate realistic data volumes.
  3. Define pass criteria first. Set maximum p95 and p99 latency, an acceptable error-rate ceiling, CPU headroom, memory-pressure limits, database latency and network utilization targets.
  4. Warm and cold cache tests. Run separate scenarios for a warmed cache and cache misses or invalidation events. Include login, writes, searches, asset delivery and any real-time protocol used by the application.
  5. Increase concurrency in stages. Start below the target, then add users gradually until and beyond 500. Hold each step long enough to observe steady state and delayed effects such as garbage collection, queue growth or storage saturation.
  6. Record the complete resource picture. Capture p95/p99 latency, throughput, errors, CPU saturation and steal time, per-process memory, paging or swapping, disk latency and I/O, network throughput, database CPU/IO, locks and connection counts.
  7. Test failure and recovery. Stop a worker, fill a temporary disk, restart the database in a test environment and restore a backup. Confirm that monitoring alerts and recovery procedures work before relying on the capacity result.
  8. Apply a reserve. Keep capacity for deploys, autoscaling delay, scheduled jobs and short bursts. Do not run the production limit at the exact point where latency first becomes unacceptable.
  9. Repeat after material changes. Re-test after code releases, schema changes, cache-policy changes, provider migrations or a significant increase in response size or active users.

Symptoms, bottlenecks and corrective actions

Symptom during load test Likely bottleneck First corrective action
CPU pinned, memory available Application or protocol is CPU-bound Profile hot code, reduce work, enable caching, then add dedicated CPU if the work is necessary.
High latency with swap activity Insufficient RAM or excessive worker/cache allocation Reduce concurrency per worker, remove memory leaks and increase RAM; do not treat more swap as a fix.
Database CPU or lock waits spike Query, index or transaction contention Inspect query plans and indexes, shorten transactions and consider a separate database tier.
High disk latency with low CPU Storage queue, fsync load or backup contention Move to faster NVMe, tune write patterns and schedule backups away from peaks.
Network ceiling reached Large responses, downloads or egress shaping Compress appropriately, offload static assets and verify the provider’s sustained-throughput policy.
Latency varies while utilization looks low Shared-CPU steal time, noisy neighbor or connection-level queuing Inspect steal time and host metrics, then test a dedicated-CPU plan or another host.

When to scale up, split or scale out

Scale up

Choose a larger VPS when one resource is consistently the bottleneck, the application is not easily distributed and a short maintenance window is acceptable. Vertical scaling is simple but leaves a larger single failure domain.

Split tiers

Separate the database, queue workers or media processing when those components interfere with interactive traffic. Give each tier its own monitoring and backup policy.

Scale out

Add web instances behind a load balancer when requests are stateless or sessions are stored in a shared system. Confirm that uploads, scheduled jobs, WebSockets, cache invalidation and database connections work across instances before adding more servers.
