Nintendo described the shortage directly; it did not publicly identify one factory or component as the definitive cause.
Why was the Wii so hard to find at launch?
Scarcity was visible even before the Wii reached stores. In a December 7, 2006 interview, Nintendo’s UK site said global customer demand meant some people could not reserve a console from the initial preorder allocation. Nintendo UK, “Iwata Asks: Closing statement”
The preorder shortage was an early sign of the mismatch between demand and available units, not evidence that Nintendo had intentionally restricted supply.
What did Nintendo say was causing the shortage?
Nintendo had not forecast demand well enough
In an April 27, 2007 investor Q&A, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata acknowledged the forecasting shortfall: “We are sorry that we were unable to sufficiently forecast this kind of demand”. He also said existing retail partners were short of stock and asking for more. Nintendo planned to prioritize those requests before expanding to new outlets. More production did not mean an instant fix
Nintendo said it was increasing production, but Iwata explained that addressing one production bottleneck could reveal another. The company did not disclose its monthly Wii output in that April briefing. Its annual production forecast was not a hard ceiling: Iwata said it had been chosen from multiple scenarios and should not be read as a direct limit on production. How did availability differ by region?
United States
In October 2007, Nintendo said U.S. demand was consistently greater than supply. The company said Wii sales volume was shaped by whether consoles were actually available on store shelves: “The sales volume of Wii was determined rather by its availability on store shelves.” Nintendo, “Corporate Management Policy Briefing / Semi-Annual Financial Results Briefing,” October 26, 2007

Europe
Nintendo also described a stock shortage in the UK. When stocks were replenished, sales recovered quickly, illustrating how limited availability had been holding back purchases there as well. These statements describe specific markets and periods; they do not establish that every European country had identical supply conditions. Nintendo, “Corporate Management Policy Briefing / Semi-Annual Financial Results Briefing,” October 26, 2007
What manufacturing bottlenecks might have mattered?
Nintendo confirmed that production increases encountered successive bottlenecks, but it did not name a single binding component or facility in the cited statements. A December 2007 analysis by Gregory A. Quirk of Semiconductor Insights proposed possible constraints in packaging and assembly. Quirk discussed custom processors, shell molds, packaging-plant capacity, and the time and cost of adding molds or suppliers; he also noted that second-sourcing might create cosmetic variation. These were an analyst’s hypotheses, not Nintendo’s confirmed explanation. Gregory A. Quirk, “What’s behind the Wii shortage?,” EE Times, December 7, 2007

How much was Nintendo producing?
By January 2008, Nintendo said it was maintaining maximum production of 1.8 million Wii units per month. That figure describes reported production capacity at the time; it is not a measure of total unmet demand or the number of people unable to buy a console. The cited sources do not establish a reliable total for either figure. Nintendo, “Summary of Q & A from Financial Results Briefing for the nine-month period through December 2007,” January 25, 2008
Was Nintendo deliberately creating scarcity?
The cited Nintendo statements point to underestimated demand, retailer requests for inventory, and production constraints. They do not establish a deliberate shortage strategy. The evidence supports a demand-and-capacity mismatch, while leaving the precise manufacturing bottleneck unresolved.

Is there still a Wii shortage?
The shortage discussed here belongs to the 2006 launch period and the 2007–2008 supply situation. It should not be taken as a statement about current used-console availability or prices, which are not established by these historical sources.
