What Was EVE Online’s New Server Cluster? The 2010 Tranquility Upgrade

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

EVE Online’s “new server cluster” was a 2010 hardware deployment for Tranquility, the game’s main cluster for players outside China. Installed in CCP Games’ London data center, it occupied 12 cabinets and was designed to add capacity and improve network connectivity as the existing setup struggled to handle demand. Its published specifications are a snapshot of that upgrade—not a description of Tranquility’s current hardware.

What was the 2010 EVE Online server cluster?

It was a new installation for Tranquility, the shared EVE Online universe serving players worldwide except those in China, who used the separate Serenity cluster. Data Center Knowledge reported that the installation was in CCP’s existing London data center and covered 12 cabinets. At the time, the report described Tranquility as serving more than 330,000 players; that figure is a 2010 snapshot, not a current player count.

The new cluster was not a new game world or a separate service for ordinary Tranquility players. It was the physical infrastructure behind the existing shared universe. CCP scheduled the migration to it for June 23, 2010.

What hardware powered Tranquility, and how was it cooled?

Data Center Knowledge’s 2010 account described IBM blade servers with 280 total cores and more than 4.8 terabytes of local storage. It reported a power requirement of 79 kilowatts. The article does not give a count of individual blade servers for this installation, so the core total should not be mistaken for a server count.

  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

The cabinets used cold-aisle containment: cold air was directed into the fronts of the cabinets rather than allowed to disperse through the room. CCP technical director Derek Wise explained that force-feeding air from the center aisle helped reduce wasted cooling air and focus it where equipment needed it. The published account does not provide cooling-efficiency measurements or a comparison with the previous installation.

Why did CCP replace the old cluster?

The immediate problem was capacity. Wise said, “It’s gotten to the point were a couple of cabinets simply don’t handle it anymore.” CCP presented the new installation as a way to increase capacity while improving network connectivity and reducing intermediary devices. Those were stated goals; the published figures do not independently quantify resulting performance gains.

In practical terms, this was an infrastructure expansion and redesign rather than a claim that adding cores alone would eliminate every source of lag. The available 2010 reporting gives aggregate hardware and power figures, but not per-node specifications, a latency result, or a controlled before-and-after performance test.

How did the 2010 cluster fit into Tranquility’s upgrade history?

CCP had already been changing Tranquility’s server platform in 2006, and later moved the cluster to a new London hosting facility in 2016. The figures below describe separate generations and are not directly interchangeable: the sources report different hardware and design details for each period.

Generation Published hardware or design detail What CCP said the work was for
2006 refresh CCP’s February 2006 service announcement said Tranquility’s old hardware would be replaced by 70 IBM 64-bit AMD dual-processor blade servers. The announcement projected that proxy and application-layer performance could double or triple; it did not establish that result as a measured outcome. [CCP, February 2006] A move to 64-bit hardware. In January, CCP’s Oveur had reported a test in which one dual-processing 64-bit machine performed at a level equivalent to three existing 32-bit dual-processing machines, while noting that Stackless Python, CCP’s code, and physics-engine behavior were still being tested. [CCP, January 2006]
2010 installation 12 cabinets, IBM blades, 280 total cores, more than 4.8 TB of local storage, and a reported 79 kW power requirement. [Data Center Knowledge, 2010] More capacity, better network connectivity, and fewer intermediary devices as the previous cabinets reached their limits. [CCP technical director Derek Wise, quoted by Data Center Knowledge, 2010]
Tranquility Tech III, 2015–2016 CCP described mirrored SAN storage, six IBM FLEX chassis, 10 Gbit links, and cross-connected SAN switches designed to avoid a single point of failure. Its March 2016 postmortem identified a 2.5 TB Tranquility database. [CCP, October 2015 and March 2016] A physical move to a new London hosting facility with new network, storage, and server hardware. CCP named reliability, stability, cluster-wide performance, connectivity, and a simpler footprint as goals. The move went live on February 29, 2016, after a year of planning and technical work. What the published specifications do—and do not—tell you

The 2010 report establishes the cluster’s cabinet count, aggregate core and storage figures, power requirement, location, and cooling approach. It does not establish the number of individual servers, current Tranquility capacity, current player numbers, or how much performance improved after the migration. Likewise, CCP’s 2006 performance projection should be read as an expectation, not a verified benchmark.

That distinction matters when comparing the generations: the 2010 figure of 280 cores and the 2016 figures for chassis, links, and storage describe different parts of different designs. Taken together, the record shows a continuing effort to expand capacity and improve reliability and connectivity, rather than a single fixed server specification for EVE Online.
