GTA Vice City Nextgen Edition was an unofficial fan conversion that brought Vice City’s world, missions, and cutscenes into Grand Theft Auto IV’s engine. After the modders said Take-Two deleted their YouTube channel shortly before launch, they released the package as a standalone version that no longer required GTA IV, according to GameSpot’s January 27, 2025 report. Take-Two did not publicly explain the specific channel action in the reporting cited here.
What was GTA Vice City Nextgen Edition?
Revolution Team’s Vice City Nextgen Edition was a fan-made conversion, not an official Rockstar release. It moved content from Grand Theft Auto: Vice City into Grand Theft Auto IV’s engine. GameSpot reported that the project brought over the original game’s missions, cutscenes, and world. GameSpot’s January 27, 2025 report covered the project and its release.

That premise distinguishes it from Rockstar’s official Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition, which includes remastered versions of Vice City and two other older Grand Theft Auto games. The fan project used GTA IV’s engine; the official collection is a Rockstar release. These are different products, and the available reporting does not establish that either is objectively better.
What happened to the modders’ YouTube channel?
The modders said Take-Two Interactive deleted their channel two days before the planned release. GameSpot reproduced their statement: “Our team’s channel was deleted by Take-Two Interactive two days before the project’s release.” The claim is the team’s account of what happened; the cited reporting does not include a case-specific public explanation from Take-Two.

GamesRadar reported on January 25, 2025, that the channel had been removed the prior week. It also reported that the team said it was reworking the release into a standalone, installation-ready package. GameSpot’s January 27 account said the team released the mod after the channel went offline. GamesRadar’s report includes the team’s account and commentary from a former Rockstar developer.
GameSpot also reproduced the team’s claims that its deleted teaser had received “over 100,000 views in less than a day” and that the team had put in “hundreds of hours of streaming.” Those figures were claims from the modders’ statement, not independently verified measurements in the report.

Can you play it without GTA IV?
According to GameSpot, yes: the team dropped the original GTA IV ownership requirement and released the package as standalone. That describes the reported 2025 release change; it does not establish that an authorized, safe, or intact copy of Revolution Team’s original package is currently available. This article does not recommend downloading copies from unverified mirrors.

What does Rockstar’s mod policy say?
Rockstar’s support policy, last updated January 10, 2025, says Take-Two generally does not object to fans using materials non-commercially in ways that do not intentionally spoil plots. But it also reserves the right to have copyrighted material taken down at any time. Among its examples of content that may receive takedown notices is distributing or promoting unauthorized mods or ports that violate Rockstar’s rights, including moving existing game content into an engine where it is not officially available. Rockstar’s published policy therefore describes general tolerance alongside limits and case-by-case discretion; it does not identify the reason for this particular channel removal.

Former Rockstar developer Obbe Vermeij said that Take-Two and Rockstar take down mods that interfere with their business interests, and that the Vice City mod “directly competes with the Definitive Edition.” GamesRadar also reported his comment, “This is what companies are supposed to do.” That is Vermeij’s individual view about the commercial relationship between the mod and the official remaster. It is not a disclosed explanation from Take-Two for the channel action, and it does not confirm the company’s specific reasoning.
