Nintendo’s cryptic “Who is Emio?” teaser was for Emio – The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club, a Nintendo Switch murder-mystery adventure—not a new standalone horror series. The game follows an assistant investigator probing a student’s death linked to unsolved murders and an urban legend. Its U.S. ESRB rating is M; Australia separately classified it MA 15+.

What game did the Emio teaser reveal?

Nintendo announced Emio – The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club on July 17, 2024, for Nintendo Switch, with an announced release date of August 29, 2024. Nintendo UK’s teaser asked whether Emio was “Just another urban legend…or something far more sinister?” The teaser’s frightening tone was a hook for a new entry in Nintendo’s existing detective-adventure series.

Nintendo described the game as the first new Famicom Detective Club story in 35 years. That is Nintendo’s description at the time of announcement. It follows The Missing Heir and The Girl Who Stands Behind, both of which had been remade for Switch. Series producer Yoshio Sakamoto was involved from the story foundations through the script and cutscenes.

What is the story about?

A junior high school student is found dead with a paper bag bearing a smiling face over his head. The image resembles a clue from a string of unsolved murders 18 years earlier, and echoes the legend of Emio, a figure said to give victims “a smile that will last forever.” Nintendo UK identifies the student as Eisuke Sasaki.

You join the Utsugi Detective Agency as an assistant investigator, helping police examine the circumstances around the death. Clues and testimony may connect the current case to the old murders, but Nintendo’s announcement leaves the central question unresolved: has the killer returned, is someone copying the earlier crimes, or did the murders give rise to the legend?

What kind of game is it?

Emio – The Smiling Man is a narrative-based, single-player crime investigation game. Its focus is following the case through clues and testimony rather than playing as an action-horror protagonist. Nintendo UK’s product page says a free demo covers up to Chapter 3 and that demo progress can transfer to the full game.

Why is Emio called an M-rated game?

Ratings depend on the region and its classification authority. Nintendo of America’s announcement links to ESRB descriptors for blood, language, and violence. Nintendo Life reported on August 15, 2024, that the ESRB assigned the game an M rating. Australia’s separate classification decision was MA 15+, not the same rating under another name.

Region and authority Rating Published content guidance
United States — ESRB, linked from Nintendo of America’s announcement M Blood, language, and violence.
Australia — Australian Classification MA 15+ “Strong themes, violence and suicide references.”

The Australian Classification record, dated May 20, 2024, includes a spoiler warning before its fuller content explanation. That explanation mentions murder, family violence, self-harm, suicide, deaths of young children, and scenes of violence. Readers who want to avoid plot-sensitive detail can rely on the record’s brief consumer advice instead. The same record describes the game as single-player, with no online interactivity or in-game purchases.
