Fallout 5 is in preproduction, but Bethesda has not announced a release date, release window, or supported platforms. The studio says most of its team is focused on The Elder Scrolls VI, making Fallout 5 a long-range project without a confirmed launch timetable. Here is what Bethesda has established—and what remains unknown.
Is Fallout 5 in development?
Yes. In a July 17, 2026 statement, Bethesda Game Studios said Fallout 5 is currently in preproduction and described it as a “long-range destination.” Bethesda also said it has multiple Fallout projects in active development. Preproduction confirms that the project is real and being worked on; it does not establish how far along the game is or when it will be finished.

When will Fallout 5 be released?
Bethesda has not announced a Fallout 5 release date or release window. The studio says The Elder Scrolls VI is its primary development focus and that most of the team is working on it. That makes a near-term release unlikely, but the official statement gives no year or schedule from which to calculate a launch.
Years such as 2032 and 2035 have appeared as speculative possibilities in coverage, not as Bethesda forecasts. For example, PC Gamer raised those years as questions about the wait; neither is a confirmed or official estimated release date.

What platforms will Fallout 5 be on?
No platform list has been announced. In a July 2026 interview reported by Windows Central, Todd Howard was asked about possible Xbox exclusivity and indicated that it was too early to comment. That leaves exclusivity unresolved: there is no confirmation that Fallout 5 will be Xbox-only, nor confirmation that it will come to PlayStation or any other named platform.
What has Bethesda confirmed about the game itself?
Technology
Bethesda says it is developing Fallout 5 and The Elder Scrolls VI on Creation Engine 3, a shared technology platform the studio has been building since Starfield launched. That confirms the engine designation, not specific visual features, performance, or gameplay systems.

Setting, characters, and gameplay
The July announcement does not reveal Fallout 5’s setting, protagonist, story, footage, or gameplay. Until Bethesda shares those details, claims about where the game takes place or what players will do in it remain unconfirmed.

These statuses come from Bethesda Game Studios’ July 17, 2026 statement. In particular, a new project involving Obsidian should not be mistaken for Fallout 5 simply because it is another upcoming Fallout game.

If you want an existing entry rather than an unannounced game, Fallout 4: Anniversary Edition is a separate option. Bethesda’s Nintendo Switch 2 roadmap says the digital edition launched February 24, 2026 (February 25 in Australia) and includes six official add-ons plus more than 150 pieces of Creation Club content. It is an edition of Fallout 4, not a Fallout 5 preorder or a preview of Fallout 5’s features. Bethesda’s Fallout franchise page lists existing games in the series.
