You do not need to finish every Grand Theft Auto game before GTA 6. Rockstar’s published synopsis introduces Jason and Lucia and a criminal conspiracy in Leonida, without saying that earlier campaigns are required. If you want one focused refresher, play GTA V Story Mode; add GTA IV and its Episodes for more modern-era context, or the classic trilogy if you want a series-history tour.
As of October 4, 2026, Rockstar lists GTA 6 for November 19, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Check Rockstar’s GTA 6 page for the latest release information.
Do you need to play the older GTA games before GTA 6?
No requirement is stated on Rockstar’s public GTA 6 page. Its synopsis centers on Jason and Lucia, an easy score gone wrong, and a criminal conspiracy across Leonida. That makes older games optional preparation rather than assigned homework. The best choice depends on whether you want a quick refresher, a longer modern-era route, or a tour of the series’ earlier settings.
Shared city names, brands, or tone are not enough to establish that every Grand Theft Auto game belongs to one continuous story. Rockstar’s consulted public descriptions do not settle the franchise’s continuity taxonomy, so it is safer to treat these routes as different kinds of context rather than promise a definitive story bridge.

Choose a catch-up route
| Route | Games | Best for | What to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Focused refresher | GTA V Story Mode | Players who want one relevant, numbered-series campaign | It is the previous numbered entry and follows Franklin, Michael, and Trevor. Rockstar does not call it a GTA 6 prerequisite. Source |
| Expanded modern-era route | GTA IV, The Lost and Damned, The Ballad of Gay Tony, then GTA V | Players who want more character-led stories set around Liberty City before moving to GTA V | Rockstar’s Complete Edition combines GTA IV and both Episodes, with stories featuring Niko, Johnny, and Luis. This is optional depth, and edition availability varies by platform. Source |
| Classic-era sampler | GTA III, Vice City, and San Andreas through The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition | Players curious about the series’ earlier games and settings | The bundle contains those three games; Rockstar’s descriptions place Vice City in the 1980s and San Andreas in the early 1990s. It is series history, not an established GTA 6 requirement. Source |
| Optional online epilogue | GTA Online, including The Contract if desired | Players who want to see additional GTA V-era story content | Rockstar describes Online as an evolving world. Its 2022 announcement said The Contract brought GTA V’s story into present-day Online through Franklin. Online is separate from a concise single-player catch-up, and its content changes over time. What each route adds
GTA V Story Mode: the clearest single-game pick
GTA V follows Franklin, a young street hustler; Michael, a retired bank robber; and Trevor, a volatile criminal. Their stories collide through dangerous heists and the criminal underworld. Rockstar’s official GTA V page describes the campaign around these three protagonists. For someone who wants a manageable starting point without turning preparation into a franchise marathon, this is the most directly relevant refresher: it is the previous numbered entry, not because Rockstar has said GTA 6 depends on it.
GTA IV and its Episodes: more Liberty City stories
The expanded route adds GTA IV’s Niko Bellic story and two connected Episodes: The Lost and Damned, featuring Johnny Klebitz, and The Ballad of Gay Tony, featuring Luis Lopez. Rockstar’s GTA IV: The Complete Edition listing says the PC edition includes the base game and both Episodes. It is a way to spend more time with the series’ HD-era storytelling, not a stated lead-in you must complete for GTA 6.
Rank #2
The Trilogy: classic settings and eras
The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition bundles GTA III, Vice City, and San Andreas. It suits players interested in the series’ earlier games, including Vice City’s 1980s setting and San Andreas’s early-1990s setting. The bundle is not evidence that those campaigns are necessary context for Leonida in GTA 6; choose it for historical interest, not obligation.
GTA Online: optional story content
GTA Online is not needed for a focused single-player catch-up. If you already play it or want additional GTA V-era material, Rockstar’s 2022 announcement for The Contract described Franklin’s return and a continuation of GTA V’s story in the present-day Online setting. Because Online evolves, the exact surrounding content can change.

Check the edition before buying
GTA V
Rockstar’s store listing describes GTA V with Story Mode and GTA Online, while also offering Online as a standalone product with a Story Mode upgrade available in-game. Check the product name and included content for your platform: buying an Online-only listing does not mean Story Mode is already included. See the GTA V listing.
GTA IV: The Complete Edition
Rockstar’s surfaced Complete Edition listing identifies a PC edition containing GTA IV and both Episodes. Do not assume the same current format or availability for every console or market; verify the listing for the platform you own or plan to use. See Rockstar’s GTA IV page.
The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition
Rockstar’s store page confirms the Trilogy’s three included games and lists PC requirements. For that PC version, the listing calls for the Rockstar Games Launcher and a social account, plus internet access for activation and periodic entitlement verification. Those PC requirements should not be generalized to console editions. Check the Trilogy store page for the edition you intend to use.

If you want more HD-era context, play GTA IV, then The Lost and Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony, before GTA V. Rockstar’s Complete Edition groups those three Liberty City stories together.
-
If your interest is the older series rather than a direct modern-era refresher, play GTA III, Vice City, and San Andreas through the Trilogy.
-
Add GTA Online only if you want its evolving content and Franklin’s appearance in The Contract; it is not needed to complete the single-player routes above.
There is no sourced completion-time requirement for any route, so choose by interest, access, and how much of the series you actually want to play—not by a supposed deadline for understanding GTA 6.
