Roblox does not publish a definitive list of words that automatically get an account banned. In ordinary chat, profanity may be filtered or rephrased; harassment, discrimination, hate speech, threats, and sexual content can violate the Community Standards. Repeated attempts to send messages Roblox detects as violations can bring chat restrictions and, in some cases, account-level action.
Which kinds of language violate Roblox’s rules?
Roblox’s rules address content and conduct, not a public word-by-word ban formula. A word being filtered does not by itself prove that it always triggers an account ban. Context and repeated behavior matter.
- Profanity: In ordinary filtered chat, Roblox may block inappropriate content or automatically rephrase profanity into safer wording. Roblox’s Text Chat Nudge FAQ explains how the chat system responds to messages it detects as violating standards.
- Harassment and bullying: Targeting or abusing another person can violate the standards; it is not simply a matter of which swear word was used.
- Discrimination, slurs, and hate speech: These are prohibited. Strong language being allowed in a particular setting does not make slurs or hate speech acceptable.
- Threats and intimidation: Hurtful or abusive language, threats, and intimidation are prohibited.
- Sexual context: Strong language used sexually remains prohibited under Roblox’s Restricted Content Policy guidance.
What happens after Roblox flags a chat message?
Roblox describes an escalating response when someone repeatedly tries to send messages detected as violations. The system may first show a “nudge”; if the behavior continues, Roblox may temporarily prevent the user from sending chat messages, with longer restrictions for continued violations. Repeated violations could ultimately lead to account actions such as suspension or a ban. Roblox says enforcement can depend on a violation’s severity and impact, so it does not provide a guaranteed penalty for each word or single message.
Roblox’s Text Chat Nudge FAQ states: “If you continue, you will be temporarily prevented from sending messages.” A chat restriction is different from an account ban, though repeated violations can escalate to account-level enforcement.

Can you swear in Roblox chat or voice chat?
In ordinary filtered chat, profanity may be filtered or rephrased. Roblox also allows strong language in a limited context: certain Restricted experiences can enable it for user communications, and those experiences are available to age-checked adults. This is not a general permission to swear anywhere on Roblox.
The exception does not permit using strong language to insult, harass, discriminate against, or intimidate others. Slurs, hate speech, and strong language in a sexual context remain prohibited. Roblox also says chats with fewer filters still follow the Community Standards: language that breaks the rules remains blocked. The cited guidance establishes these limits for chat generally; it does not publish a separate list of words or a word-specific ban threshold for voice chat. See Roblox’s Restricted Content Policy and chat guidance.

Roblox chat filtering versus a community’s blocked-word list
Roblox’s platform filtering and a community owner’s Blocked Words list are separate systems. Roblox’s filtering applies to eligible communication across the platform. The Communities feature lets authorized roles add extra word and phrase filters for new Wall and Forum posts; it supplements Roblox moderation and does not determine what gets you banned platform-wide.
For a community’s own filter, exact matching is the default: adding “fruit” filters that entry, not automatically “fruits” or “fruity.” Asterisks can act as wildcards for partial matches. Roblox Support says a community can have up to 1,000 active entries, with bulk addition of up to 50 entries at a time. These are configuration limits for that feature, not a Roblox-wide banned-word list. Details are in the Roblox Communities Blocked Words help page.

How to interpret a filtered message or warning
- If a message is turned into hashtags, rephrased, or blocked, that means the filter acted on it; it does not establish that the word alone guarantees an account ban.
- If you receive a nudge, stop trying to send the flagged message. Continuing can lead to temporary chat restrictions.
- Judge language by both its content and its use: abusive targeting, discrimination, threats, and sexual context raise issues beyond ordinary profanity.
- Treat third-party banned-word lists as unofficial and potentially incomplete. Roblox does not publish an exhaustive public list or a guaranteed word-by-word penalty schedule.
