What Would Make a New Uncharted Game Feel Fresh Rather Than Like a Retread?

A new Uncharted would not need to abandon climbing, combat and puzzles. It would need to make those familiar ingredients create a different character-driven adventure.

A new Uncharted would feel fresh not by abandoning the series’ adventure formula, but by making its familiar climbing, combat, puzzles and cinematic storytelling serve a genuinely different character dynamic and playable situation. The Lost Legacy is the clearest example: it kept the series’ recognizable ingredients while moving beyond Nathan Drake and giving Chloe Frazer and Nadine Ross a distinct relationship at the center.

Keep the adventure grammar; change what it means

Uncharted has a recognizable rhythm: exploration and traversal give way to puzzles, combat and character-driven story. A sequel does not need to discard those ingredients to feel new. It needs to combine them in situations that create different decisions and reveal something different about its characters.

Naughty Dog’s account of the first game describes a core area built around climbing, low and high cover, a traversal puzzle, explosive barrels and enemies. Those elements form a flexible vocabulary, not a requirement to repeat the same encounter. A new game could make familiar tools feel different through the geography, the characters’ goals or the way a scene’s action changes their relationship. The studio also recalls how its focus on polish shaped later decisions: coherence and feel matter as much as a list of features. Naughty Dog’s 15th-anniversary account of Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune offers that early example.

A new lead needs a new interpersonal engine

Replacing Nathan Drake is not, by itself, a creative direction. The new protagonist—or ensemble—needs a different way of generating tension, humor and change. In its 2016 announcement of The Lost Legacy, Naughty Dog described Chloe as an improviser and Nadine as calculated and tactful. That contrast gives their scenes a dynamic that is not simply a substitute for Nathan’s familiar banter.

The studio called the project “a standalone story in the Uncharted universe,” rather than an extension of Uncharted 4. That distinction is useful: a spin-off or sequel can belong to the same world and preserve its adventure identity without continuing the same character arc. Naughty Dog’s announcement of The Lost Legacy sets out both the continuity and the change: cinematic storytelling, adventure locations, dynamic combat and intricate puzzles, now centered on Chloe and Nadine.

Make the setting shape play, not just the view

A striking location becomes part of a fresh game when it changes how players move, explore and encounter danger—and when those choices have room to affect the story’s rhythm. A new landscape should not be a backdrop pasted onto familiar sequences. It should invite different routes, create distinct tactical problems and give the characters reasons to react to the place and to each other.

The Lost Legacy provides a concrete example. Its large open-ended area required Naughty Dog to adapt the “wide-linear” narrative techniques it usually used. The challenge was to allow player choice while keeping Chloe and Nadine’s relationship consistent and natural. The studio’s GDC 2018 session summary describes that design problem. Its importance goes beyond map size: open-ended play can change where and when story beats happen, so the writing and encounter design must support more than one route or pace.

Balance freedom with character development

More room to choose creates a responsibility. If players can approach objectives in different ways or spend more time exploring, the story still needs to make emotional sense. Characters should not seem to reset between scenes, and key developments should remain clear even when players reach them by different routes or at different rhythms.

That does not mean every optional path must produce a branching plot. It means the game should decide what freedom is for: allowing discovery, changing combat approaches, deepening the setting, or letting a relationship unfold through optional exchanges. Then it should make sure that freedom complements rather than obscures the central character arc. The Lost Legacy example shows that this balance is a design problem to solve, not an automatic benefit of making an area larger.

Give new mechanics an emotional purpose

A feature feels like part of Uncharted when it helps deliver the experience the story is aiming for—not merely because it adds another button or system. Naughty Dog’s Uncharted 4 retrospective describes character-driven storytelling and innovation as studio pillars, and discusses work on movement, traversal, animation and interaction with the world. In the same retrospective, game director Vinit Agarwal explained the principle: “We make story games. Uncharted and The Last of Us are very different games. I think it’s because we’re taking the fundamentals of design and applying it to the ‘canvas’ we’re working on. We try to understand the essence and the emotion behind what we’re trying to make and capture the essence in those mechanics.” Naughty Dog’s 2021 retrospective is the source for Agarwal’s remarks.

Applied to a hypothetical new Uncharted, that approach means asking what an action or mechanic communicates. Does a traversal change make a character feel resourceful, vulnerable or out of their depth? Does a new combat option fit the kind of conflict this story wants to portray? If a mechanic does not deepen the intended emotion or create a meaningful play choice, novelty alone is a weak reason to include it.

How to judge a proposed new direction

There is no official Naughty Dog formula for measuring freshness, and the studio’s published material does not establish what players want from a future entry. But its documented design examples suggest practical questions for evaluating any hypothetical sequel concept:
