Its crossover pitch combined faction-specific abilities with fast-paced matches and maps that retained influences from their source games. Ubisoft discontinued development in 2024, and the service end date it announced was June 3, 2025; the game should not be treated as currently available.
What was XDefiant?
Ubisoft San Francisco developed XDefiant as a first-person arena shooter for PC and consoles. The launch-era design centered on 6v6 matches and a roster of factions, each with its own abilities and skills. Rather than presenting the crossover as a story in which the franchises met, the game used their identities as the basis for different playable teams and combat styles.

Ubisoft’s preseason plan called for 14 maps, five modes and five factions, with new content planned for quarterly seasons. Those figures describe the launch-era plan, not a verified inventory of everything released during the game’s life. Ubisoft’s overview of XDefiant framed it as a fast-paced shooter bringing factions from different Ubisoft worlds together.
Which Ubisoft worlds were represented?
At launch, the five factions named by Xbox Wire were Phantoms, Cleaners, Libertad, Echelon and DedSec. Each had distinct abilities and skills, giving players different approaches within the same team-based shooter format. Xbox Wire’s launch coverage lists the factions and describes their abilities.
#1 Best Overall
Ubisoft described the crossover as bringing together factions from different universes while prioritizing map gameplay and preserving influences from the source games. That supports the broad idea of a Ubisoft-worlds mash-up, but the cited material does not establish a complete faction-to-franchise map. It is therefore more accurate to name the five launch factions than to assign each one a source series without qualification. Ubisoft’s studio article explains the design approach to factions and maps.
What did “combines the best” mean in practice?
“The best” was a promotional framing, not an independently measured verdict. The concrete combination was a compact arena-shooter structure—6v6 matches and faction abilities—paired with characters and visual or gameplay influences drawn from different Ubisoft properties. The factions supplied team identity and distinct play styles; maps carried recognizable influences while being designed for shooter gameplay.
That approach made the game a crossover in its mechanics and presentation rather than simply a collection of references. The launch-era plan also suggested an evolving live-service model, with seasonal content, although the planned cadence should not be confused with a claim that every planned update arrived.

Ubisoft announced on December 3, 2024 that it would discontinue development. Executive Marie-Sophie de Waubert said the game had not attracted and retained enough players over the long term to compete in the free-to-play FPS market or justify further significant investment. A December 4 company press release likewise attributed the decision to a review of performance, profitability and market conditions. These are Ubisoft’s stated reasons, not an independently established diagnosis.
“we’ve not been able to attract and retain enough players in the long run to compete at the level we aim for in the very demanding free-to-play FPS market.”
— Marie-Sophie de Waubert, Ubisoft, December 3, 2024
Ubisoft also reported that XDefiant had over 15 million players in 2024. That is a cumulative player figure, not a count of concurrent players or people still playing at a particular time. It does not conflict with Ubisoft’s claim that long-term retention was insufficient: total players reached over the game’s lifetime and the ability to retain an active audience are different measures. No retention rate or active-user count is established by the cited figures. Ubisoft’s community message gives the cumulative total; its December 3 discontinuation announcement explains the shutdown decision, and its December 4 press release adds the company’s business rationale.
Can you still play XDefiant?
No ongoing access should be assumed. Ubisoft said new downloads, registrations and purchases would stop immediately when it announced the discontinuation in December 2024, while Season 3 would still be released and servers would remain available until June 3, 2025. That announced end date has passed. The cited announcement gives the planned service timeline, but does not independently verify the precise moment the servers went offline.
