Why the End portal has no set Y level
The End portal that takes you to the End is a room inside an Overworld stronghold. Strongholds vary in height, so the portal room’s Y coordinate varies too. A community-edited stronghold reference says strongholds can generate at any Y level, mostly underground, and may reach bedrock level; it does not establish a reliable numeric range for every edition and current version. That means digging to a commonly suggested coordinate is not a dependable way to find the portal. Eyes of Ender guide you toward a stronghold, not to the portal room’s specific height. Follow them to the structure and search its connected rooms. Minecraft: Strongholds
How to find the portal room
- Use Eyes of Ender in the Overworld and follow their direction to locate a stronghold.
- Once you reach the structure, explore its rooms and corridors rather than digging at one assumed Y coordinate. The portal room contains End portal frames and is suspended over lava. Minecraft: Strongholds
- If you are in Bedrock Edition and cannot find a portal room after searching the connected layout, consider locating another stronghold; not every Bedrock stronghold has an End portal.
Does the answer differ between Java and Bedrock?
Yes. Minecraft’s official stronghold article says every Java Edition stronghold has an End portal, while only some Bedrock Edition strongholds do. This is a difference in whether a stronghold contains a portal, not a fixed Y-level difference. Minecraft: Strongholds

Mojang’s issue tracker records a historical Bedrock stronghold portal-generation issue fixed in version 1.20.70. That record documents a past bug; it is not evidence that current Bedrock worlds generally lack portals. Mojang bug tracker: MCPE-19426
Do not confuse the End portal with the exit portal
The stronghold portal is the entry to the End. The exit portal is a separate structure found in the End dimension, and its height depends on the terrain at its center location rather than on a universal Y coordinate. Minecraft Wiki: Exit portal
