Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsShort answer: PlayStation compatibility is determined by the console generation, the individual game and the exact accessory model. A PS5 runs the overwhelming majority of more than 4,000 PS4 games, but some titles are PS4-only or have missing functions and unexpected behavior. DualSense is required for native PS5 games; DualShock 4 and licensed third-party pads work only with supported PS4 games on PS5. Original PS VR can work on PS5 with older PS4 camera hardware and a camera adaptor, while PS VR2 is a separate PS5-only system. Check the current PlayStation Store listing and the accessory maker’s model-specific guidance before buying or connecting anything.
Use this compatibility map before you buy
The phrase “PlayStation compatible” is too broad to answer a practical question. Start by identifying three things: the console, the game’s original generation and the exact accessory. A PS4 game running through PS5 backward compatibility is a different case from a native PS5 game, even when both appear in the same library.

| What you own or want to play | What generally works | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| PS4 game on PS5 | The overwhelming majority of Sony’s 4,000-plus PS4 games | Some games are marked “Playable on: PS4 only,” and compatible titles can still have errors, missing PS4 functions or other unexpected behavior. |
| Native PS5 game | DualSense wireless controller | PS5 games can only be played with DualSense controllers. |
| Supported PS4 game on PS5 | DualShock 4 and officially licensed third-party gamepads | Support is game-specific; a controller that works in one PS4 title is not guaranteed in another. |
| Original PS VR game on PS5 | Original PS VR headset, PS4 PlayStation Camera and camera adaptor | The PS5 HD Camera is not a replacement for the PS4 Camera. Some games also need Move or Aim controllers. |
| PS VR2 game | PS VR2 connected to PS5 and PS VR2 Sense controllers | PS VR2 does not work with PS4, and neither VR system plays the other’s software library. |
| PS3 disc | Not supported by PS5 | A PS4 digital upgrade tied to a PS3 disc also cannot be played on PS5 when that disc remains required. |
These are general boundaries, not a guarantee for a particular title. The Store page for the exact edition is the final check, especially for games with multiple PS4, PS5, VR or upgraded versions.
Can I play PS4 games on PS5?
Usually, yes. Sony says the overwhelming majority of its more than 4,000 PS4 games are playable on PS5. This covers compatible digital purchases and supported physical PS4 discs used in a PS5 model with a disc drive. It does not mean every PS4 release behaves identically, or that every PS4 feature carries over.

- DualSense Controller PS5 and PC compatible. Not compatible with PS4.
- PS Remote Play requires Remote Play App connected to Wi-Fi, PS4 or PS5 console with the latest system software and compatible game. A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.
Find the game’s actual compatibility label
Open the individual game listing in the PlayStation Store and look for its platform and compatibility wording. A title marked “Playable on: PS4 only” is not a PS5 game, even if it appears in a PS5 owner’s library. If the listing identifies PS5 playability, read any notes about features, upgrades or required hardware before purchasing an accessory.
Expect title-specific limits
Sony warns that some compatible games may have missing PS4 functionality, errors or behavior that differs from playing on a PS4. A menu, online feature, peripheral input or save-related function can therefore be the deciding factor for you even when the basic game launches. Try the game on PS5 first, when possible, before spending money on an add-on intended to restore a feature.
Do not confuse a PS4 upgrade with a native PS5 license
Some games offer a PS5 version or upgrade while others remain PS4 software running on PS5. The Store page identifies which version you are obtaining. An upgrade can change resolution, frame rate, loading or controller features, but those changes do not make every PS4 accessory usable with the upgraded PS5 version.

Will my PS4 controller work on PS5?
A DualShock 4 wireless controller works with supported PS4 games played on PS5. It does not control native PS5 games. Sony’s current support guidance is explicit: PS5 games can only be played with DualSense wireless controllers.

DualShock 4 versus DualSense
| Controller | PS4 games on PS5 | Native PS5 games |
|---|---|---|
| DualSense | Works with supported PS4 games | Required |
| DualShock 4 | Works with supported PS4 games | Does not work |
| Officially licensed third-party PS4 gamepad | Works when the game supports it | Not a general substitute for DualSense |
The boundary is based on the game being played, not simply the console to which the controller is connected. You can leave a DualShock 4 paired to the PS5 for a compatible PS4 title, then switch to DualSense when launching a PS5 title.
Why PS5 games require DualSense
Native PS5 software can depend on DualSense features and input behavior that are not present in DualShock 4. Even if a PS5 game appears to use ordinary buttons, Sony does not permit DualShock 4 control for that software. Use the DualSense supplied with the console or another DualSense model confirmed for PS5.
Third-party gamepads
Sony states that officially licensed third-party gamepad controllers work with supported PS4 games. “Officially licensed” is not the same as “works with every PS4 game,” and it does not establish native PS5-game support. Confirm both the controller maker’s compatibility list and the game’s Store information.
Can I use a PS4 steering wheel, arcade stick or flight stick on PS5?
Possibly, but category names are not enough. Sony identifies officially licensed racing wheels, arcade sticks and flight sticks as peripherals that may work with PS5 games and supported PS4 games. The exact model and title determine the result.

- Wireless Controller: The controller connects wirelessly via Bluetooth for convenience.
- DualSense Technology: Features advanced haptic feedback and adaptive trigger buttons for immersive gaming.
- Gray Camouflage Design: Stylish and unique design with a gray camouflage pattern.
- 17 Buttons: Includes 12 main buttons and 5 customizable buttons for versatile gameplay.
- PlayStation 5 Compatible: Works with all PlayStation 5 games and accessories.
Check the model, not just the product type
- Record the manufacturer’s exact model number and firmware requirement.
- Check whether the maker lists PS5, PS4 or both, and whether support is limited to named games.
- Read the game’s Store entry for controller or peripheral requirements.
- Look for functions that are unavailable on PS5, such as a special button, vibration mode, motion input or programmable control.
Sony cautions that not all officially licensed or third-party peripherals work on PS5. A wheel that operates a PS4 racing game through backward compatibility may not operate the game’s native PS5 version. The same distinction applies to arcade sticks and flight sticks.
When a peripheral does not respond
- Close the game completely and reconnect the peripheral directly to the PS5 rather than through an unverified hub.
- Update the accessory firmware using the maker’s stated process.
- Confirm that the game is running as the PS4 version if the peripheral is listed only for PS4.
- Check the game’s control settings and any required mode switch on the peripheral.
- If support remains unclear, ask the manufacturer about that exact model and game; do not infer compatibility from a similar product.
Can I play original PS VR games on PS5?
Yes, supported original PS VR games can run on PS5, but the setup uses older camera hardware. You need the original PS VR headset, a PlayStation Camera for PS4 (model CUH-ZEY1 or CUH-ZEY2) and the PlayStation Camera adaptor. Sony says the adaptor is available at no charge.
Required original-PS-VR hardware
- Original PlayStation VR headset and its processor or connection unit, as required by the headset setup.
- PS4 PlayStation Camera, model CUH-ZEY1 or CUH-ZEY2.
- PlayStation Camera adaptor for connecting that camera to PS5.
- Move controllers or an Aim controller when the individual game requires or supports them.
The PS5 HD Camera cannot replace the PS4 Camera for original PS VR games. Buying the newer camera will not solve a missing PS4-camera requirement.

Check the game’s VR and controller requirements
Original PS VR software can have different input needs. Some titles use a standard gamepad, others require one or two Move controllers, and some support the Aim controller. Read the game’s Store entry before assuming that the headset alone is sufficient. A game can be playable on PS5 while still needing a controller you do not own.

Practical setup sequence
- Connect the PS4 Camera to the PS5 through the official camera adaptor.
- Connect the original PS VR headset and its associated cables according to the headset’s setup instructions.
- Pair the controller type named by the game’s listing, then launch the PS4 version of the VR game.
- Run the camera and play-area calibration when prompted.
- If tracking is poor, improve lighting, clear reflective objects from the camera’s view and re-run calibration before replacing hardware.
Does PS VR2 work with PS4 or original PS VR games?
No. PS VR2 is a separate compatibility ecosystem. It works with PS5, not PS4. Original PS VR cannot play PS VR2 games, and PS VR2 cannot play original PS VR content. PS VR2 Sense controllers are compatible only with PS5 and PS VR2.
| System | Console support | Software support | Controllers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Original PS VR | PS4 and supported PS5 setups | Original PS VR games | DualShock 4, Move or Aim where the game specifies them |
| PS VR2 | PS5 only | PS VR2 games | PS VR2 Sense controllers; game-specific requirements still apply |
Do not buy a headset based only on a game’s name. Check the Store entry for the VR system designation and the supported controller list. A title with both generations may have separate PS4 and PS5 versions, each requiring its corresponding VR hardware.

No. PS5 consoles do not support PS3 game discs. A PS3 disc cannot be inserted and played as a backward-compatible disc game.

There is a related limitation for some PS4 digital upgrades obtained through a PS3-disc upgrade path. If the PS3 disc is still required as proof of ownership whenever you play, that game cannot be played on PS5. The existence of a PS4 digital entitlement does not remove the disc requirement or create PS3 compatibility.

A reliable pre-purchase compatibility check
Use this sequence whenever you are buying a game, upgrade or accessory.
- Identify the target software. Write down whether you intend to play the PS4 version, a native PS5 version, an original PS VR version or a PS VR2 version.
- Open the exact Store listing. Check the “Playable on” label, edition, VR system and any controller notes. Treat “PS4 only” as a hard stop for PS5 play.
- List required inputs. Note whether the title names DualSense, DualShock 4, Move, Aim, a wheel, an arcade stick or another specific device.
- Match the accessory model. Compare the exact model number and firmware requirements with the maker’s current compatibility information.
- Verify physical-media conditions. Confirm whether you have a PS5 model with a disc drive and whether the game needs its original disc each time.
- Test before expanding the setup. Where Sony warns of possible missing functions or unexpected behavior, launch the game first and only then purchase an accessory intended to address a confirmed need.
Troubleshooting common compatibility surprises
The game launches but a feature is missing
Confirm whether you are running the PS4 or PS5 version and reread the Store notes. Backward-compatible games can lose specific PS4 functionality or behave differently. If the missing feature depends on a peripheral, check the title’s supported-device list rather than replacing the controller at random.
DualShock 4 works in menus but not in the game
The game may have switched to a native PS5 version. Close it, inspect the installed edition and launch the supported PS4 version if that is the one your controller supports. A DualShock 4 cannot be made into a native-PS5 controller through pairing or a cable.
A PS4 camera setup fails on PS5
Verify that the camera is CUH-ZEY1 or CUH-ZEY2 and that it is connected through the PlayStation Camera adaptor. The PS5 HD Camera does not satisfy the original PS VR camera requirement. Recheck cable order and recalibrate after the camera is recognized.
A wheel or arcade stick is detected but unusable
Detection does not prove game support. Check firmware, the accessory’s PS4/PS5 mode switch and the game’s supported-device notes. If the product is listed only for PS4, run the PS4 game version; otherwise obtain confirmation from the manufacturer for the exact title.
A PS VR2 game will not start with original PS VR
This is an ecosystem mismatch, not a cabling fault. Original PS VR hardware cannot run PS VR2 software. You need a PS5, PS VR2 and the required PS VR2 controllers for that game.
What to remember when upgrading a PlayStation setup
- Backward compatibility covers most PS4 games, not every game or every feature.
- Native PS5 games require DualSense; DualShock 4 remains useful for supported PS4 games on PS5.
- Third-party pads and specialty peripherals must be checked by exact model and title.
- Original PS VR on PS5 needs the PS4 Camera and camera adaptor; the PS5 HD Camera is not interchangeable.
- PS VR and PS VR2 do not share software libraries or controllers.
- PS3 discs are not supported by PS5, including upgrade situations where the PS3 disc remains required.
Console software, Store labels and accessory support can change. Recheck the current listing and manufacturer documentation at the moment you buy, especially for a newly released edition, firmware update or peripheral.
