The console accepts only microSD Express cards for expandable storage, and the eShop listing warns that a linked mobile number may be required.
Requirements at a glance
| Requirement | What Nintendo’s information says | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Game storage | 79.1 GB required space on the Australian Nintendo eShop listing, 2026 | Keep additional free space available because mandatory updates can need more room than the initial installation. |
| Built-in console storage | 256 GB UFS internal storage; Nintendo reserves part of it for system use | The usable amount is lower than the advertised capacity, and other games, captures and downloads compete for the remainder. |
| Storage expansion | microSD Express cards only, up to 2 TB | A standard microSD card is not the supported expansion format for Switch 2. |
| Online multiplayer | Paid Nintendo Switch Online membership and an internet connection | Online modes cannot be accessed with a free account alone. |
| Accounts | Nintendo Account plus an Activision account; a linked mobile number may be requested | Complete both account setups before troubleshooting a failed sign-in or matchmaking attempt. |
| Network hardware | Switch 2 supports Wi-Fi 6; the dock includes a wired LAN port | Either connection can work, but wired networking can reduce wireless interference at the dock. |
Nintendo’s product information is the authority for the edition and region you are buying. The storage figure above comes from an Australian eShop listing and can change with updates or differ in another country.

How much storage Call of Duty needs on Switch 2
The installation figure
The Nintendo eShop listing for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 states a required space of 79.1 GB. That is the current figure shown for the Australian listing in 2026, not a permanent guarantee for every region or future build. Treat it as the minimum space the listing says to have available for that version.

Why the number is not a safe target
The same listing says additional storage may be required for mandatory game updates. An update can need temporary working space while new files are downloaded, checked and written, so a console that has exactly the listed amount free may still reject the installation or patch. The practical rule is to leave a substantial buffer rather than trying to free exactly the displayed amount.

What the 256 GB console capacity means
Nintendo lists Switch 2 with 256 GB of UFS internal storage, but explicitly notes that some capacity is reserved for system use. The space shown as available in Data Management is therefore lower than 256 GB. That available space must also hold operating-system data, screenshots and video captures, save-related data, updates and every other downloaded game.
When to add a microSD Express card
Nintendo supports microSD Express cards up to 2 TB for Switch 2. The “Express” designation matters: do not assume a card that worked in an earlier console is compatible. Buy a card clearly labeled microSD Express and confirm its capacity and authenticity. Expansion makes sense when the internal free-space figure is below the game’s requirement, when you expect several large games, or when you want room for recurring patches without repeatedly archiving software.
Check space before downloading
- Open System Settings on the console.
- Open the storage or Data Management area and read the available-space figure rather than the headline capacity.
- Compare the available amount with the eShop requirement and leave room for the update warning.
- If the margin is too small, archive software you can redownload later or install a compatible microSD Express card, then recheck the available space.
- After installation, check the same screen again; a successful download does not prove that a later mandatory patch will fit.
System-menu wording can change with firmware revisions, so use the storage screen’s current labels if they differ from these descriptions.

Internet access and online play
What requires a connection
Nintendo marks the game’s online modes as requiring an internet connection. Nintendo’s eShop product information also states: “Any online play modes require a paid membership to Nintendo Switch Online.” You therefore need both connectivity and an active subscription for online multiplayer; one does not replace the other.
No published minimum speed
The cited Nintendo pages do not publish a game-specific minimum Mbps figure. Avoid treating an invented speed threshold as an official requirement. A stable broadband connection is the useful recommendation: consistent latency and low packet loss generally matter more to a competitive match than a high headline download rate.
Wi-Fi 6 or wired LAN
Switch 2 supports Wi-Fi 6. That is convenient for handheld or tabletop play, provided the console has a strong signal and the wireless channel is not congested. When the console is docked, Nintendo’s technical specifications list a wired LAN port. Ethernet can be the better choice if wireless interference, distance from the router or crowded household traffic causes disconnects. The dock’s wired connection is not available while playing undocked.

Data use and reliability
- Use the same network location where you normally play and test it at the time matches are busiest in your home.
- Pause large downloads or streaming on other devices if matches suffer from spikes in latency.
- Check your router’s placement and signal strength before buying faster internet; a weak wireless link can be the limiting factor.
- If your broadband service has a data cap, remember that the initial download and later mandatory updates are separate from the traffic generated during matches.
Can you play without internet?
The available Nintendo information establishes the requirement for online modes, but it does not document offline availability for every mode in this release. Do not assume that all single-player content works offline. Check the game’s current mode-specific information and Activision’s sign-in requirements before relying on it for travel or a location without service. Even when a mode is designed for solo play, account validation, updates or first-run requirements may affect access, so confirm the behavior for the exact edition installed on your console.

The membership requirement
Online multiplayer in the listed game requires a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership. Nintendo describes the service as a paid service whose features are available to members. Membership is separate from the game purchase and from an Activision account.
Individual versus family membership
| Plan type | Useful when | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Individual | One Nintendo Account holder needs online access. | Confirm that the subscription is attached to the Nintendo Account used on the console. |
| Family | Several eligible Nintendo Accounts in the same family group need service access. | Check Nintendo’s current family-group rules and make sure every player’s account is included. |
Nintendo’s plan prices and availability vary by country and can change. Check the current Nintendo Switch Online membership page for your region instead of relying on an old price or a different country’s store.

The Nintendo Account connection
Nintendo says use of Nintendo Switch Online requires a Nintendo Account and internet access. Sign in with the account that owns or is authorized to use the membership. If a child or secondary profile is playing, verify that profile’s family-group status rather than assuming the console owner’s subscription automatically covers every account.
Activision account and phone-number requirements
The eShop listing requires an Activision account and acceptance of Activision’s software terms. It also says that a mobile phone number linked to the account may be required. “May” is important: the request can depend on account status, security checks or service conditions, so have access to a phone capable of receiving the requested verification if the sign-in flow asks for one.

- Confirm that the Nintendo profile you will use is connected to a Nintendo Account.
- Verify that the Nintendo Account has an active Nintendo Switch Online membership if you intend to play online.

- Read and accept the software terms presented during setup.
- If prompted, complete mobile-number linking and any verification step before returning to the game.

Digital and physical purchase considerations
Whether you choose a digital or physical listing, check the exact Nintendo product page for its current required-space figure and update warning. A physical copy should not be treated as proof that the console needs no internal storage: the listing and the console’s installation prompts determine what data must be stored. A digital purchase requires enough free space before downloading; a physical purchase may still require downloaded data or patches. The safe preparation is the same—check available storage, plan for updates and use a supported microSD Express card if necessary.
A setup checklist that avoids common failures
- Confirm the edition and region. Open the Nintendo eShop listing for the Switch 2 version and note its current required-space figure. Regional listings can differ.
- Measure usable storage. Use the Data Management screen, not the console’s advertised capacity, and account for space already occupied by other software and captures.
- Create headroom. Archive or delete items you can restore later, leaving materially more space than the listing minimum for mandatory updates.
- Choose expansion correctly. If internal space is tight, use a microSD Express card within Nintendo’s supported capacity range; do not substitute a regular microSD card.
- Prepare online service. Arrange paid Nintendo Switch Online service and connect the Nintendo Account that will play.
- Stabilize the network. Prefer a strong Wi-Fi 6 connection or the dock’s wired LAN connection when wireless interference is a problem.
- Finish account setup. Sign in to Activision, accept its terms and complete phone linking if requested.
- Install and patch. Allow the game to finish its download and mandatory updates before judging whether storage or online play works correctly.
Troubleshooting by symptom
| Symptom | Likely cause | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Download says there is not enough space | The available figure is below the installation requirement or lacks update headroom. | Check Data Management, archive other software and retry; add a supported microSD Express card if the internal margin remains too small. |
| Update fails after the game installed | Mandatory patch needs temporary or additional space. | Free more space than the original listing required, then run the update again. |
| Online option is locked | No active Nintendo Switch Online membership, wrong Nintendo profile or no internet connection. | Verify the playing profile’s membership, Nintendo Account sign-in and network connection. |
| Matches disconnect or feel erratic | Wireless interference, weak signal, household congestion or packet loss. | Move closer to the router, reduce competing traffic or test the dock’s wired LAN connection. |
| Activision sign-in stops at verification | Account setup, terms acceptance or requested phone linking is incomplete. | Finish the Activision account flow and provide the linked mobile number if the service requires it. |
| A storage card is not recognized | The card is not microSD Express or is not being detected by the console. | Confirm the Express marking and supported capacity, then follow the console’s current storage-card setup instructions. |
What to verify before buying
- The eShop listing for your country still shows the version and storage requirement you expect.
- Your console’s usable free space is comfortably above the listing minimum after system-reserved capacity is taken into account.
- Any expansion card is explicitly microSD Express and within Nintendo’s supported capacity limit.
- The Nintendo Account that will play has the appropriate Nintendo Switch Online membership.
- You can access the Activision account credentials and, if requested, the mobile number linked to that account.
- Your intended location has a stable internet connection, especially if online multiplayer is the main reason for buying the game.
With those checks complete, the remaining variables are the current regional eShop listing, future patch sizes and Activision’s account-verification prompts. Keep checking the console’s available-space screen and the publisher’s current requirements as the game is updated.
