What You Need to Play Steam Games on an Android Handheld

Steam Link lets an Android handheld stream games from a PC running Steam. Here’s what you need, how to connect, and what to check for controls and network performance.

You can play Steam games on an Android handheld with Valve’s Steam Link app, but in the standard setup the games run on a separate computer. Steam Link streams the PC’s video and audio to the handheld and sends its controls back to the PC. You need an Android device that can install the app, a computer running Steam with the game installed, a network connection between them, and controls the handheld and game can use.

What you need for Steam Link

  • An Android handheld that can install Steam Link. Valve lists Android 5.0 or newer as the app’s minimum requirement. Check the handheld’s Android version and whether it can access Google Play or Valve’s official Android download option. Valve’s Android Steam Link support page
  • A host computer running Steam. The PC must be turned on, Steam must be open, and you must be signed in. It runs the game and sends the stream to the handheld. Valve’s Steam Remote Play overview
  • A network connecting the two devices. For the Android setup, Valve says to put the handheld and host PC on the same network. Valve recommends a wireless 5 GHz router; the Google Play listing recommends connecting the computer to the router by Ethernet and the mobile device to its 5 GHz Wi-Fi band. These are recommendations for performance, not a published minimum-speed guarantee. Valve support · Steam Link on Google Play
  • Usable controls. The handheld’s built-in buttons may work, but the general Steam Link documentation does not certify every handheld’s controls. Valve lists the Steam Controller, Xbox One S Controller, DualShock 4 on Android 9.0 or newer, Razer Kishi, and Raiju Mobile as supported inputs. Valve’s supported-input list
  • The game installed on the host PC. Steam Link does not install the PC game on Android; the host computer runs it.

How to set up Steam Link on an Android handheld

  1. Turn on the PC that has your Steam game installed, open Steam, and sign in.
  2. Connect the PC and Android handheld to the same home network. For Valve’s recommended arrangement, wire the PC to the router and use its 5 GHz Wi-Fi band on the handheld.
  3. Install Steam Link from Google Play. If Google Play is unavailable on your device, check the Android download option on Valve’s Steam Link support page.
  4. Pair a supported controller, or use Steam Link’s setup flow to configure the controls available on your handheld.
  5. Follow Steam Link’s on-screen pairing steps, select your host PC, and start a stream. The app sends the handheld’s input to the PC while displaying the PC’s video and audio.

Steam Link streams games; it does not run them locally

Valve describes Remote Play this way: “When you play a game using Remote Play, video and audio are sent from your gaming PC to another device.” Remote input goes back to the gaming PC, where the game is running. Valve’s Steam Remote Play overview

That distinction matters when choosing a handheld. With Steam Link, your PC has to be available and the network has to carry the stream. A handheld that runs PC games locally is a different kind of setup: its own hardware and operating system must be able to run the games. Valve’s Proton documentation describes running Windows games on the Linux-based Steam Deck and Steam Machine; it does not establish that an ordinary Android handheld can run the Steam PC catalog locally. Valve’s Steam Deck and Steam Machine compatibility documentation

Consideration Steam Link on Android Local PC-game handheld
Where the game runs On a separate PC running Steam. Valve On the handheld itself; capabilities depend on its hardware and operating system.
Host PC availability The PC must be on, running Steam, and available to provide the stream. A separate streaming host is not part of the local-play setup.
Network dependence The video and audio stream must reach the handheld, and input must return to the PC. Local play does not rely on a home-network stream for the game to run.
Compatibility evidence Depends on the host PC’s ability to run the game, the stream, and usable handheld controls. Steam Deck ratings do not certify Android streaming devices. Must be assessed for the specific handheld and game. Valve’s cited compatibility ratings apply to Steam Deck and Steam Machine. Valve

What affects whether a particular game works well

For Steam Link, the PC’s ability to run the game is only one part of the experience. The stream also depends on the network, while the handheld needs a usable display and controls. Check the exact device’s Android version, app availability, built-in button behavior, screen orientation, and aspect ratio rather than assuming every Android gaming handheld behaves the same way.

Compatibility badges on Steam store pages are for Steam Deck, and Valve’s compatibility documentation also covers Steam Machine. They are not certifications for Android handhelds using Steam Link; Valve notes that a Deck “Playable” rating can require user configuration. Valve compatibility documentation

Device-specific display behavior can change with app updates. For example, the Steam Link Google Play changelog notes a coordinate-scaling fix for 4:3 devices such as the AYANEO Pocket AIR Mini. That is a specific fix, not a guarantee that every 4:3 handheld—or every game—will behave identically. Steam Link on Google Play

If the stream stutters or the controls feel wrong

  • Improve the network path first. Valve recommends a 5 GHz wireless router. Google Play recommends wiring the host PC to the router, connecting the handheld to the router’s 5 GHz Wi-Fi band, and keeping the handheld within reasonable range. Try reducing distance and obstacles between handheld and router before assuming new equipment is necessary. Valve support · Google Play listing
  • Confirm the host is ready. Make sure the PC is on, Steam is running, and you are signed in.
  • Check input compatibility on the actual device. Pair one of Valve’s listed controllers if the handheld’s built-in buttons are not recognized or comfortable. DualShock 4 support is listed for Android 9.0 and newer; other supported examples are the Steam Controller, Xbox One S Controller, Razer Kishi, and Raiju Mobile. Valve’s input documentation
  • Check display fit. If the game image or touch coordinates do not line up, test the game and Steam Link settings on that handheld; a fix for one device or aspect ratio should not be treated as universal.

When this setup is the right fit

Steam Link is a practical option if you already have a PC that can run your Steam games and want to play them on an Android handheld over your home network. It is not a way to turn an Android handheld into a standalone Steam PC. If you need games to run without a host PC or network stream, evaluate a device designed to run PC games locally and check compatibility for its specific operating system and hardware.
