Instead, the free Steam Link app displays a game rendered by a computer running Steam, while your phone, tablet, or Android TV sends controls back to that computer. To make it work, you need an Android 5.0-or-newer device, Steam Link, a host PC with Steam and the game installed, and a network capable of carrying responsive video and input. A controller is optional.
The most reliable arrangement is a private home network with the host PC connected by Ethernet and the Android device on 5 GHz Wi-Fi. That setup still does not guarantee every game or input method will work, because compatibility depends on the host game, controller support, permissions, and network conditions.

How Steam games run on Android
Steam Link is a streaming client, not an Android version of Steam. Steam’s Remote Play system runs the game on your computer, captures its video and audio, sends that stream to the Android device, and returns your touch or controller input to the computer. Steam describes Remote Play as sending “video and audio … from your gaming PC to another device.” See the Steam Remote Play overview for the service model.
That distinction determines every requirement. The phone does not need PC-level graphics hardware, but the computer must be able to launch the game and the network must move a continuous interactive stream with little delay. If the host computer is off, Steam is closed, or the game fails to start on the computer itself, Steam Link cannot fix those problems.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

Android device and Steam Link app
Supported Android versions
Steam says the Android Steam Link app works on many phones, tablets, and TVs running Android 5.0 or newer. The version number is the app’s stated platform minimum; it is not a promise that every current device, television firmware, Bluetooth stack, or game input layout will behave identically. Check the Android version in your device’s settings before troubleshooting game compatibility.
Installing the client
Install Steam Link from your Android app store. Steam also provides an Android download route for devices that do not have Google Play through its Android Steam Link App instructions. The application itself is free; you are streaming games you already run through Steam on the host computer.
What the Android device is responsible for
The client decodes the incoming video, plays audio, displays Steam’s interface, and transmits input. A newer or faster phone can improve decoding stability and display quality, but it cannot compensate for a congested wireless network or a host PC that cannot maintain the game’s frame rate. Keep the device charged during long sessions and avoid power-saving modes that suspend Wi-Fi or background Bluetooth connections.

Host PC requirements
Prepare Steam and the game
Turn on the computer, launch Steam, and sign in to the account containing the game. Start the game locally once before using Remote Play. This confirms that the title has completed installation, required launchers have been configured, graphics drivers are functioning, and any first-run prompts have been handled.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
The host remains responsible for the game’s operating-system requirements, graphics API, anti-cheat behavior, and other PC-side dependencies. Steam Link only transports the resulting image and your input; it does not turn an unsupported PC game into an Android build.
Keep the host available
During a session, prevent the computer from sleeping or losing its network connection. A desktop connected by Ethernet is preferable because the host must transmit the stream while receiving control data. If the computer uses Wi-Fi, place it close enough to the router for a strong 5 GHz signal and minimize competing traffic.
Internet and home-network requirements
Same network for first setup
For initial pairing, Steam’s Android instructions say the Android device and host computer should be on the same network. Use your normal private home network rather than a guest SSID. Guest and client-isolated networks can block the device-to-device traffic Steam Link needs even when both devices appear to have internet access.

Why Ethernet and 5 GHz help
Steam recommends connecting the host computer by Ethernet and using a 5 GHz wireless router for the Android device. Ethernet removes one wireless hop and avoids the host competing for airtime while it sends the stream. Steam’s network guidance notes that 5 GHz is generally less congested than 2.4 GHz, but its shorter range means a distant room or several walls may produce a weaker signal. In that situation, a strong 2.4 GHz connection can be more stable than a marginal 5 GHz one.

Other devices and applications can affect play: cloud backups, large downloads, video calls, busy streaming services, and neighboring wireless networks all consume capacity or airtime. Stop or schedule those activities when the stream is sensitive to delay.
Remote or restricted networks
Remote Play is not supported in many public, workplace, school or university, guest, captive-portal, or client-isolated environments. A network can permit ordinary web browsing while blocking the peer-to-peer traffic required for game streaming. Steam lists these Remote Play ports:
- UDP 27031 and UDP 27036
- TCP 27036 and TCP 27037
If a firewall is managed by an organization, you may not be able to open the required traffic yourself. Use a private network you control instead of attempting to bypass an institution’s restrictions.

No. Steam Link can present touch controls, so a compatible Android device can start a game without extra hardware. Touch input is practical for turn-based games, menus, strategy titles, and other interfaces designed around a pointer or a small number of buttons. It is usually less comfortable for games that require two analog sticks, precise triggers, rapid shoulder-button combinations, or long sessions.

Controllers Steam lists for Android
| Input option | Connection or requirement | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| Touch controls | Built into Steam Link; no separate device | You are testing the connection or playing a title suited to on-screen controls |
| Steam Controller | Use according to the controller’s Android connection procedure | You want physical controls and the model is available to you |
| Xbox One S controller | Wireless or wired connection supported by the Android device | You prefer a conventional console layout |
| DualShock 4 | Steam lists Android 9.0 or newer for this controller | Your device meets that Android requirement |
| Razer Kishi | Device-mounted controller; phone compatibility depends on the handset and connector | You want a handheld form factor without a separate wireless pad |
| Raiju Mobile | Use the model’s supported Android connection method | You need a phone-focused physical layout |
These are examples from Steam’s Android guidance, not a guarantee for every revision or third-party input device. Confirm current model availability and your Android device’s compatibility before buying. Bluetooth pairing, USB support, and button mapping can differ by handset.
When a controller is connected but does nothing
First check whether Steam Big Picture recognizes the controller on the host. If Big Picture does not see it, the issue is at the host, cable, Bluetooth, or operating-system level rather than in the Android stream. If Steam recognizes the device but the game does not, the title may expect a different input mode or may use a method Steam documents as unsupported.
Step-by-step setup
- Prepare the host. Turn on the computer, connect it to your private network, open Steam, sign in, and verify that the target game launches locally.
- Prepare Android. Install Steam Link from the Android app store, or use Steam’s Android download path if Google Play is unavailable.
- Join the same network. Connect the phone, tablet, or Android TV and the host PC to the same home network for pairing.
- Open Steam Link. Follow the on-screen connection flow and select the computer running Steam when it appears.
- Complete pairing. Enter any code Steam Link displays on the host, then allow the client to test the connection.
- Choose controls. Continue with touch controls or pair/connect a controller. If you use a controller, confirm it is visible in Steam Big Picture.
- Launch from the library. Select the installed game in Steam Link and start it. The game process runs on the PC while the Android device shows the stream.
- Check responsiveness. Move through a menu before starting a demanding session. If video or input feels delayed, fix the network conditions before changing game settings.
Diagnosing stutter, delay, and connection failures
The host PC does not appear
- Confirm Steam is open and signed in on the computer.
- Verify both devices are on the same private network and not separated by a guest or client-isolation setting.
- Check that the computer’s firewall allows Steam and the Remote Play traffic on UDP 27031/27036 and TCP 27036/27037.
- Restart Steam Link and Steam after correcting the network or firewall state.
Public, workplace, school, university, captive-portal, and other restricted networks may prevent discovery even when all local settings are correct.

Open Steam’s streaming performance overlay to distinguish variable network time from host rendering problems. Steam recommends lowering stream quality to Balanced or Fast when the connection cannot sustain the selected quality. Then test the host on Ethernet, move the Android device closer to the router, prefer 5 GHz where its signal is strong, and stop competing network activity. Steam’s Suggested Network Settings guide explains these adjustments.

The game launches but controls are wrong
Test the same controller in Steam Big Picture, then inspect the game’s own controller settings. Some games expect raw input, elevated-permission software, or a particular controller class that Remote Play cannot pass through normally. Touch controls may expose only the actions Steam has mapped for that title. A game can therefore be playable on the PC while its streamed input is incomplete.
Compatibility: Android app versus individual game
There are two separate checks. The first is whether your device can run the Android Steam Link app; Steam’s stated minimum is Android 5.0. The second is whether the specific PC game, its launcher, graphics technology, permissions, and input method behave correctly through Remote Play.
Steam documents limitations involving some older graphics technologies, raw-input cases, applications that require elevated permissions, and particular controller categories. Non-Steam games added to a Steam library may stream, but Steam does not officially support them in the same way as games delivered through the Steam library. Treat a successful local launch as the starting point, not a universal compatibility guarantee. Consult the Steam Remote Play support FAQ when a title or input method behaves unexpectedly.
