It added Episode One and Episode Two to the main game, brought new developer commentary and Steam Workshop support, and restored or improved parts of the original campaign. Valve has continued to patch the build since launch, so the anniversary release is not a frozen launch-day version.
What’s in the Half-Life 2 20th Anniversary Update?
The update combines campaign content, commentary, mod support, map work, and player options. Valve’s anniversary page describes the additions, while its Steam announcement dates the release to November 15, 2024. Half-Life 2 originally launched on November 16, 2004.

- Episodes in the main game: Episode One and Episode Two are accessible from the Half-Life 2 main menu. Completing an expansion automatically advances to the next one. Lost Coast is available under Extras.
- Developer commentary: Valve brought members of the original team back to record three and a half hours of commentary for the base game.
- Steam Workshop: You can browse, install, and play user-created content from within the game. Workshop items can include full campaigns and replacements for weapons, enemies, and the user interface.
- Map restoration and graphics: Valve’s level designers reviewed every map to address longstanding bugs, restore content and features, and improve lightmaps and fog.
- Player and platform options: The update adds graphics settings, updated gamepad support, configurable aim assistance, and a refreshed Steam Deck menu that also appears in Big Picture mode on PC.
- Game Recording: Steam Game Recording can use custom gameplay event markers and phases.
Does the update include Episode One and Episode Two?
Yes. Both episodes are included in the Half-Life 2 main game and can be launched from its menu. The game automatically advances to the next expansion after you finish one. Lost Coast is also accessible from the main game, but it appears in the Extras menu rather than alongside the episodes.
What changed in the graphics and maps?
Valve says its designers went through every map, fixing visual pops, holes, disappearing objects, missing grass sprites, and lighting problems. They also restored content and features, added radial fog, increased lightmap resolution, and adjusted reflectivity to better match the original release.

Among the player-selectable options are classic launch-day blood and fire effects, higher model detail, and bicubic lightmap filtering for smoother shadows when shader detail is set to Very High. These are specific presentation options, not a claim that the update increases performance across systems.
Did Half-Life 2 get new developer commentary?
Yes. The base game gained three and a half hours of commentary recorded by members of the original development team. Valve described the tracks as new commentary for the whole game. The commentary is in-game, so players can hear the team’s discussion while revisiting the campaign.

Can you use mods with the updated game?
The update adds Steam Workshop support inside Half-Life 2, letting players browse and install user-made content, including complete campaigns and replacements for game assets. Compatibility with older mods is not universal, however: a mod built for the previous version may behave unexpectedly on the updated build.
Valve preserved the earlier game version in the publicly visible steam_legacy beta branch, labeled “Pre-20th Anniversary Build.” Valve recommends trying it if a mod or feature does not work as expected. Older standalone Episode One and Episode Two applications also remain available for community projects that depend on them, though their Steam Library placement changed to Tools.

Use the legacy branch when an older mod or feature needs the pre-anniversary build. It is a compatibility option, not a guarantee that every older mod will work.
What happened after the anniversary launch?
Valve’s Half-Life 2 Steam announcement archive records follow-up updates on November 16, November 18, and November 26, 2024, and February 11, 2025. The logged changes include fixing an issue in Entanglement where Alyx could obstruct the player boarding the teleporter, restoring the Highway 17 train speed to better match the original shipped difficulty, fixing a Linux launch crash, and updating localizations. Those notes describe fixes made in later patches, not necessarily problems that remain in the current build.

What anniversary documentary and archival footage did Valve release?
Valve released a documentary made with Secret Tape about Half-Life 2’s development and related company history. Its description says it covers financial difficulties, a hack and leak, a publisher lawsuit, and the effort to build Steam, as well as the game’s development. Valve also restored development videos from E3 2003, E3 2002, and SIGGRAPH 2000. The documentary and archival footage offer a broader account than a straightforward making-of feature.

Yes. Valve announced an expanded second edition of Raising the Bar with material on Episode One and Episode Two, previously unseen concept art, and ideas and experiments for the unrealized third episode. The announcement described a return to print in 2025, but it does not establish the book’s current availability. Check that a listing is for the expanded second edition before buying.
