Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream launched on Nintendo Switch on April 16, 2026. It builds an island around customized Miis: create residents, introduce them, help with their concerns, and watch their relationships and everyday antics develop. Nintendo calls it the first new entry in more than 10 years. Here’s what the game brings to the series and what to know about playing it now.
How the island life works
The core loop combines player choices with events that unfold on their own. You create residents and can bring them together; once acquainted, Miis may interact independently. Their conversations, concerns, friendships, and possible drama give the island its changing social life. Nintendo says time in the game passes in step with the real world, encouraging players to check in regularly. The experience can vary with the residents you create, and individual interactions are possibilities rather than guaranteed outcomes.

As many as eight Miis can share a home as roommates. Nintendo says they can react differently to living together, creating another setting for the island’s social situations.
Create Miis with more ways to shape their identities
When making a resident, choose guided prompts with “Get Help” or build a face “From Scratch.” The game adds face-part options and face paint for designs that go beyond a conventional Mii look. You can also set a resident’s name, height, body type, gender, voice, personality, energy, quirks, and other traits.

- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*

Nintendo Support lists gender choices as Male, Female, and Non-Binary. Dating preferences can include one or more of Male, Female, and Non-Binary, or none. The support FAQ says these selections do not change the game’s system or story content. It also says married couples may have babies regardless of gender; that statement applies specifically to married couples, not every relationship feature.
Help residents connect, then see what happens
You can place Miis near each other to prompt possible conversations and bonding. After they become acquainted, they can interact without the player arranging each encounter. Residents may also come to you with concerns, giving you a role in their island life without scripting every outcome.
Visit shops and other island facilities
The island includes facilities for everyday needs as well as comic diversions. Nintendo names these in-game locations:

Make original items in Palette House
Palette House lets you create content for residents and the island. Nintendo describes making pets, drinks, a resident’s favorite TV show, clothing, house exteriors, ground tiles, and other original items. The listed categories show the range of creation options, but Nintendo does not publish a total count of possible creations.
Reshape the island and personalize Mii behavior
Island-building tools let you move buildings, expand land, and place decorations. The available examples include plants, benches, vending machines, and playground rides. You can also give residents signature poses, eating and sleeping behaviors, and favorite phrases, so customization reaches beyond appearance.

Nintendo Support says each player can register up to 70 Miis. Each console user has a separate island and save, and each player has one save file. Residents can be created based on Mii faces registered on the console, but the game does not directly import Miis from other software such as Miitopia. Miis created in Living the Dream cannot be transferred out to the console or other software.
Current update status
Nintendo Support’s update history lists version 1.0.4, released July 22, 2026. Its notes describe fixes for a rare save-corruption issue after Island Builder, a progression error after resolving a Mii’s concern, poster display and selection issues, and other issues. The listed notes are maintenance fixes, not additional features. Nintendo’s update history records earlier versions as well.
