Yes, one cartridge can hold many games—but “all the games in one cartridge” is an idea, not a promise that one product contains every game for a console. The term covers different hardware and software arrangements. The NES Action 52 was a fixed 52-game cartridge; a Game Boy flashcart is a modern way to load a library onto compatible hardware.
What does “all the games in one cartridge” mean?
A multi-game cartridge is a category, not a standard format. What it can run depends on the console, the cartridge hardware and the software it contains. A cartridge sold with a fixed selection of games is different from a flashcart, which is designed to load game files from storage.
The Game Boy Museum describes the modern appeal simply: “One cartridge can now hold a whole library.” That is the museum’s description of flashcarts, not a claim that one cartridge contains every Game Boy game. Smith’s account notes multiple known versions, with variations in labels, printed circuit boards, revisions and boxes. It also describes the games as frequently buggy or glitch-prone. That is the article’s historical report; it is not a measured failure rate or a claim based on testing here.
How a Game Boy flashcart differs
A flashcart is a piece of hardware for a particular console that can store or load game files, rather than a fixed collection of games built into the product. The cartridge itself and the files placed on it raise separate questions. A flashcart’s ability to run a file does not establish that the file is licensed, legally obtained or authorized for distribution. Check the provenance and rights status of any included or separately sourced games rather than assuming that a large game count makes the collection legitimate.
What to check before choosing a multicart
There is no meaningful universal compatibility score for “a multicart.” Identify the console and exact cartridge model first, then check the details that determine whether it suits your use:

If the goal is to own Game Boy games on cartridges rather than load a library, the Game Boy Museum names Greenboy Games, Incube8 and Broke Studio as studios making new physical Game Boy cartridges. The page does not establish that their releases are multicarts or confirm current availability, so check each studio’s current catalog and the rights and format of an individual release.
