Here’s what players can expect across the remake, Halo Infinite, and competitive Halo.
What is the next Halo game?
There are two different answers, depending on whether you mean the latest playable release or the next new title. Halo: Campaign Evolved is the newest released game: a remake of the original campaign. Microsoft’s next-new-title announcement assigns that project to Activision, but gives no public title, story details, platforms, or release date. Microsoft’s September 22, 2026 announcement says a new, purpose-built team will lead development, separate from ongoing development and plans for Call of Duty. It does not identify the team or describe the game’s scope.
A small team at Halo Studios will continue supporting the Halo community and games already in market. The announcement does not explain how the Activision assignment affects every other project Halo Studios may have in development.
What does Halo: Campaign Evolved include?
Campaign Evolved remakes the original Halo: Combat Evolved campaign in Unreal Engine 5 and adds three campaign missions. It launched July 28, 2026, for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC through Steam. Xbox announced access at launch through Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass; players can also buy the game separately. Halo Waypoint’s launch details and Xbox Wire’s launch announcement provide the official release and platform information.

Because it is available on PlayStation 5 and PC as well as Xbox, Campaign Evolved should not be treated as an Xbox-exclusive release.
What is happening with Halo Infinite?
Halo Studios has shifted away from planning major content releases for Halo Infinite. The studio said Operation: Infinite may be its last major update currently planned, while challenges, ranked seasons, and community events would continue “throughout next year and beyond.” The studio also said it was shifting focus to projects including Campaign Evolved. That wording distinguishes the end of currently planned major updates from the continuation of lighter ongoing support; it is not an announcement that the game or its services are shutting down.

What’s next for Halo esports?
The Halo Championship Series (HCS) said official competition for Halo Infinite would end after the 2025 Halo World Championship. Its announcement said some online and LAN competition would continue in 2026, but official HCS competition on a new title would not return that year. The HCS 2026 update also described 2026 as Halo’s 25th anniversary year. That milestone is a franchise anniversary, not a player-count or sales figure.

Microsoft has confirmed who is assigned to lead development, but has not publicly revealed the game’s name, plot, launch timing, platform plan, or details about the Activision team. Those details should not be inferred from rumors or from Campaign Evolved, which is a remake rather than the announced next new title.

Halo Studios’ plans for Unreal Engine 5 were announced before the Activision assignment. In October 2024, the studio said multiple Halo projects were in development with the engine. It described Project Foundry as research and a tool for training the development process, explicitly not as a game or tech demo. The September 2026 announcement changes responsibility for the next new title without fully explaining the rest of Halo Studios’ project slate. Halo Waypoint’s 2024 studio update includes Halo Studios head Pierre Hintze’s description of the rebrand as a “new chapter”; that was a statement about the 2024 transition, not the Activision-led project.
