It keeps the same core premise and delivery-focused gameplay while adding missions, locations, equipment, activities, and platform-specific features. The exact technical upgrades depend on whether you play on PS5 or PC.
What does Director’s Cut add?
The original game’s story is not described as being replaced. Instead, Director’s Cut adds material to the existing experience, with new content integrated into progression and discovered as you play, rather than presented as a separate campaign. [Kojima Productions; PlayStation Blog]
Story, exploration, and combat
- New missions and an expanded area add to the storyline.
- Additional weapons, vehicles, character actions, and enemy types broaden combat and traversal.
- The Firing Range provides training activities, while the Racetrack and Fragile Circuit add racing and minigames.
Director’s Cut also adds ranked challenges, an online leaderboard, Friend Play Mode, and an expanded Social Strand System. Online features may require an internet connection and platform account; PlayStation specifically notes that the PS5 Social Strand System requires internet access and a PlayStation Network account. How do the editions compare by platform?
The added activities are part of Director’s Cut, but its technical differences vary by platform. PS5 features should not be assumed to apply in the same way on PC or other platforms.

Can you carry your progress over from the original?
PS4 to PS5
PlayStation supports transferring a save from the PS4 game to Director’s Cut on PS5. To prepare the save, use a facility terminal in the PS4 game to export it; you must have no active Orders for Sam. Then load the exported save in Director’s Cut using the same PlayStation Network account. [PlayStation]
If you own the PS4 disc and want to use the discounted PS5 digital upgrade path, PlayStation says you must insert that disc each time you download or play the PS5 version. The disc-based path is unavailable on a disc-free PS5. Check the current store listing for upgrade eligibility and price. [PlayStation]

Upgrade prices
Launch pricing is historical, not a reliable guide to what an upgrade costs now. At launch in 2021, the PS4-to-PS5 upgrade was announced at $10/€10; the 2022 PC launch announcement offered a $9.99 upgrade to owners of the base game on Steam or Epic, with the base game required to be installed when purchasing.
