For most players, “Minecraft versions” means Java Edition versus Bedrock Edition. They are separate editions with different device support, multiplayer networks, and ways to add content. Check your device first, then make sure you and your friends have the same edition: Java players cannot directly join Bedrock games, or vice versa.
Java vs. Bedrock at a glance
| What matters | Java Edition | Bedrock Edition |
|---|---|---|
| Typical platforms | Windows, macOS, and Linux, according to Minecraft’s edition guide. | Supported Windows PCs, consoles, and mobile devices; check Minecraft Help’s current edition listing for a specific device. |
| Who can join your game? | Other Java players. Java multiplayer works across supported Windows, Mac, and Linux systems. | Other Bedrock players on supported devices, including cross-platform play within Bedrock. |
| Content and customization | Community mods, custom servers, snapshots, and selectable stable releases. | Marketplace content, add-ons, and Preview or Android beta testing. |
| Input and local play | Native controller support is not listed in the PC storefront FAQ. | Controller and touch support; console split-screen is included in Minecraft’s comparison. |
The editions share the Minecraft name and core premise, but they are not interchangeable for multiplayer. The details above follow Minecraft’s edition comparison, its PC product page, and Minecraft Help.
Which edition works on your device?
Windows, macOS, or Linux
Java Edition is available for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Bedrock is also available on Windows, so a Windows PC does not by itself tell you which edition you have or need. Minecraft’s PC store FAQ puts it plainly: “If you have Minecraft for Windows, you have the Bedrock Edition. However, you can still play Java Edition on a Windows PC.” The Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition for PC product includes both editions, but you still launch the one that matches the game you want to join.
Console or mobile
Bedrock is the relevant edition for supported consoles and mobile devices. Exact availability varies by device and can change; consult Minecraft Help’s editions list rather than relying on an old platform list.

- Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
- Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only
Can Java and Bedrock players play together?
No—not directly. They use different multiplayer networks, so the edition has to match the hosted world, server, Realm, or LAN game. Minecraft Help states: “You need Bedrock Edition to join a Bedrock Edition world, server, Realm, or Local Area Network (LAN) game. Java Edition players can only join Java Edition hosted games.” See Minecraft Help’s multiplayer requirements.
Java players can play with Java players across supported Windows, Mac, and Linux computers. Bedrock players can play with Bedrock players across supported Bedrock devices. A PC player is not automatically compatible with a console friend: both need to be using Bedrock for that cross-platform game, or both Java for a Java game.

If you are choosing a version for a group, agree on the edition before buying or launching the game. On consoles, online multiplayer may also require the platform’s online service: Xbox Game Pass Core, PlayStation Plus, or Nintendo Switch Online, as applicable. Check the current requirements for your platform.
How mods, add-ons, and updates differ
Java: community mods and selectable releases
Java is the usual fit for players seeking community-made mods and custom servers. Minecraft’s comparison also describes Java snapshots and the option to select older stable releases. These testing and version-selection workflows can change, so use Minecraft’s current instructions before installing a test build; test releases may be unstable and can affect worlds.

Bedrock: Marketplace, add-ons, and supported controls
Bedrock’s content route centers on Marketplace content and add-ons, alongside controller and touch input. Its testing options include Preview and, on Android, beta builds. As with Java test releases, these builds are not the same as a regular stable release.
Neither content ecosystem makes one edition universally better. The right trade-off depends on whether you want community modding and server choice or Bedrock’s Marketplace route and device flexibility. Minecraft’s edition guide and PC comparison describe the distinction.

How to choose
- Check your device. If you play on a supported console or mobile device, choose Bedrock. On a computer, check which editions are available for your operating system.
- Ask what your friends use. Match their edition, not merely their device type. Java and Bedrock do not directly cross-play.
- Consider how you want to customize. Favor Java for community mods, custom servers, and selectable releases; favor Bedrock for Marketplace content, add-ons, and controller or touch play.
- On Windows, verify the product label. “Minecraft for Windows” means Bedrock. The PC bundle includes both Java and Bedrock, but they remain separate editions.
