For ordinary Survival base defense against explosions, obsidian is a strong practical answer—but it is not the only block with the top commonly listed blast-resistance value. Obsidian, crying obsidian, anvils, and netherite blocks are all listed at 1,200 blast resistance in the Minecraft Wiki’s comparison. The answer changes if “strongest” means hardest to mine, movable by pistons, or immune to a particular creature’s attacks.
What does “strongest” mean in Minecraft?
Block strength is not a single statistic. A defense can resist explosions but still be mined, moved under certain rules, or broken by a special mechanic. To compare blocks usefully, separate four questions:
- Blast resistance: how a block withstands explosions. Minecraft’s Bedrock creator documentation explains that explosion resistance is configurable and that its effect depends on explosion power; a rating is not a universal number of TNT blocks required to destroy something. Microsoft Learn’s explosion-resistance component documentation says, “Greater values result in greater resistance to explosions.”
- Hardness: a separate property that affects how long a block takes to mine. Obsidian is listed with hardness 50, but that does not make hardness and blast resistance interchangeable. The Minecraft Wiki’s obsidian entry reports both values.
- Survival availability: whether a player can obtain and use the block as a normal building material in Survival. Some blocks with very high resistance are special or internal blocks, not practical Survival choices.
- Special interactions: certain mobs or mechanics can break blocks that otherwise withstand explosions. Piston movement also follows its own rules.
Which blocks have the highest listed blast resistance?
The Minecraft Wiki’s resistance-values table lists 1,200 for several blocks, including obsidian, crying obsidian, anvils, netherite blocks, ancient debris, reinforced deepslate, and respawn anchors. It also lists special blocks at higher values, but those are not equivalent to ordinary Survival building materials. See the resistance-values table.
| Block | Listed blast resistance | Survival use and practical caveat |
|---|---|---|
| Obsidian | 1,200 | Obtainable in Survival and commonly used for explosion-resistant construction; hardness is listed as 50. The Minecraft Wiki calls it tied for the highest blast resistance among blocks obtainable in Survival. Source. |
| Crying obsidian | 1,200 | Included in the same Survival-obtainable top group reported by the Minecraft Wiki. Source. |
| Anvil | 1,200 | Also listed in the Wiki’s tied Survival-obtainable group; it is a functional block rather than a typical wall material. Source. |
| Netherite block | 1,200 | A top-rated option in the Wiki’s resistance table. Bedrock 1.20.30 release notes record its value changing from 720 to 1,200. Wiki table; Bedrock 1.20.30 notes. |
| Ancient debris | 1,200 | Bedrock 1.20.30 notes record a change from 720 to 1,200. That is a version-specific Bedrock release-note fact, not proof of current Java parity. Source. |
| Reinforced deepslate | 1,200 | Listed at 1,200 in the Wiki table, and the Bedrock 1.20.30 notes record its change from 720 to 1,200. Its special status makes it different from a routine Survival building choice. Wiki table; Bedrock 1.20.30 notes. |
| Respawn anchor | 1,200 | Listed at 1,200 in the Wiki table; Bedrock 1.20.30 notes record its change from 720 to 1,200. Its explosion-related behavior depends on where it is used, so it should not be treated as a simple wall block. Wiki table; Bedrock 1.20.30 notes. |
The Bedrock release notes also record that deepslate and several deepslate variants changed from 3.6 to 6, and that end stone bricks changed from 0.8 to 9 in version 1.20.30. These are historical Bedrock changes from 2023, not a complete current comparison across Java and Bedrock.

Is obsidian the strongest block for a Survival base?
It is a sensible headline answer when the question means “a block I can build with in Survival that has very high blast resistance.” The Minecraft Wiki lists obsidian at resistance 1,200 and describes it as tied with crying obsidian, anvils, and netherite blocks for the highest blast resistance among Survival-obtainable blocks. It is not uniquely strongest by that measure, and the tie does not make all four blocks equally practical for building.
Obsidian’s listed hardness of 50 addresses mining difficulty, not explosion resistance. Do not infer from that figure that it is immune to every form of damage: the Wiki reports that wither behavior can break obsidian, while the Ender Dragon cannot. High blast resistance is therefore not an all-purpose guarantee.

What block is hardest to mine?
“Hardest” usually refers to hardness and mining time, not blast resistance. The cited obsidian entry gives a hardness value of 50, but the available comparisons do not establish exact mining times across all the blocks in the resistance group. Tool choice, edition, and game version can also matter to practical mining. A high blast-resistance rating alone is not enough to identify the hardest block to mine.
Which blocks are creeper-proof?
For a player-facing answer, obsidian and other blocks listed at 1,200 blast resistance are strong choices against ordinary explosion damage. “Creeper-proof,” however, can overpromise: blast resistance is not an absolute immunity label, and explosion results depend on explosion power and other game conditions. The official Bedrock creator documentation describes resistance as dependent on explosion power, so the rating should not be translated into a fixed count of creepers or TNT.

Does edition or version change the answer?
Yes. Mojang’s official Bedrock 1.20.30 notes from 2023 explicitly changed ancient debris, netherite blocks, reinforced deepslate, and respawn anchors from 720 to 1,200 resistance. They document Bedrock behavior for that release, not a guarantee of current Java parity. The comparison table is a useful reference, but no complete current official Java-versus-Bedrock resistance table is established here. For a build where a precise value matters, check the current mechanics for the edition and version being played.
What about piston-movable defenses?
Blast resistance and piston movement are separate properties. End stone can be relevant when considering movable defenses, but the cited comparison includes exceptions to its movement qualification and does not establish it as the single strongest movable block. Choose a block based on the exact piston rule and edition you are using rather than assuming the most blast-resistant block can be moved, or that one movable candidate wins every comparison.
