Xbox Game Pass Ultimate is the broader subscription. Xbox’s current US comparison lists day-one releases, a library of 500+ games across console, PC and supported devices, cloud gaming, online console multiplayer and several bundled extras. Game Pass Core is the narrower offer described on a separate Xbox page: online console multiplayer, a curated catalog of “over 25” games and member deals. The complication is that Core does not appear in the plan selector on Xbox’s current US comparison page, so whether you can buy it depends on your region and account.
Check whether Core is still available to you first
The current US comparison page at https://www.xbox.com/en-US/xbox-game-pass/compare lists four plans: Ultimate, Premium, Essential and PC Game Pass. Core is not among them. Xbox still hosts a standalone Core page at https://www.xbox.com/en-US/xbox-game-pass/core, which describes the offer in detail, but the sources reviewed do not explain how existing Core subscribers are being moved, renewed or priced. Treat Core as a legacy name in this comparison. Before you choose, look at the plan options your region and Xbox account actually offer.
What Game Pass Ultimate includes
Ultimate is the tier Xbox promotes across its current US Game Pass overview at https://www.xbox.com/en-US/xbox-game-pass. Its listed benefits are:
- Day-one releases. Newly released first-party and eligible titles arrive in the library on launch day.
- A 500+ game library across console, PC and supported devices. Xbox states that catalog size varies over time and by region, plan and platform, so treat the number as a snapshot.
- Cloud gaming. The US comparison lists 15 hours per month and the best streaming quality, up to 1440p on supported titles and devices. Those limits are specific to the current US Ultimate listing.
- Online console multiplayer. Included on the plan.
- Bundled memberships and benefits. Fortnite Crew, EA Play and Ubisoft+ Classics, plus in-game benefits and enhanced Rewards.
What the legacy Core page describes
The Core page covers a much smaller package. Its central feature is online console multiplayer, which Xbox describes this way: “Game Pass Core includes online console multiplayer to quickly find the people you want to play with – whether it’s friends, family, or the greater Xbox community.”

- SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE: From fast-paced action and adventure to timeless classics, family-friendly games, innovative indie titles, brain-teasing puzzles, immersive roleplaying adventures, and intense shooters. Dive into a world where every gamer can find their next favorite game.
- NEW GAMES ON DAY ONE: Enjoy incredible new games on day one from Xbox Game Studios, Bethesda Softworks, Activision Blizzard, and more. Play The Outer Worlds 2, NINJA GAIDEN 4, and High on Life 2 as soon as they are released.
- ONLINE CONSOLE MULTIPLAYER: Tap into the heart of the Xbox community and join millions of players ready to play together. Online console multiplayer is included with Game Pass Ultimate.
- EA PLAY MEMBERSHIP INCLUDED: Jump into Battlefield, STAR WARS, and other great game franchises with EA Play. Included at no extra cost, members get access to a collection of EA’s best-loved games, in-game rewards, and trials of select new games.
- A curated catalog of “over 25” games. This is the page’s own description. Because the page is old, read it as a historical figure rather than a guaranteed current catalog size.
- Member deals and discounts. The page highlights these as a Core benefit.
- No day-one promise. The page tells readers to upgrade to Ultimate for day-one games rather than promising them with Core.
- No cloud gaming listed. The page does not present cloud gaming as a benefit. That omission is not proof that Core lacks it in every market, so do not treat it as a firm entitlement either way.
Ultimate and Core side by side
| Feature | Game Pass Ultimate | Game Pass Core (legacy page) |
|---|---|---|
| Game catalog | 500+ games across console, PC and supported devices (current US comparison) | “Curated catalog of over 25 games” (legacy page description) |
| New releases | Day-one releases included (current US comparison) | Not promised; the page points to Ultimate for day-one games |
| Cloud gaming | Included: 15 hours per month, up to 1440p on supported titles and devices (current US comparison) | Not listed on the legacy page |
| Online console multiplayer | Included | Included, and it is the page’s headline feature |
| Bundled extras | Fortnite Crew, EA Play, Ubisoft+ Classics, in-game benefits, enhanced Rewards (current US comparison) | Member deals and discounts |
| Price shown | $22.99/month (current US comparison) | $9.99/month (legacy page; may be out of date) |
| Current availability | Listed in the current US comparison | Not in the current US plan selector; the legacy page remains online |
Online multiplayer does not separate the two plans
Both plans include online console multiplayer as Xbox describes it, so it is not a reason to pick Ultimate over Core. Free-to-play multiplayer is a separate matter: it is open to every Xbox player without a Game Pass subscription, so a paid plan is not required to play those games online.
What the prices do and do not tell you
The current US comparison lists Ultimate at $22.99 per month. The Core page advertises $9.99 per month, but that page is old. It cannot confirm what Core costs today, whether that price applies in your region, or how large the gap is. Do not subtract one figure from the other to estimate savings. Check the price shown in your Xbox account for your region before subscribing, because regional pricing differs and prices change.

Which plan fits your situation
- Choose Ultimate if you want day-one releases, cloud gaming, the full catalog or the bundled memberships. On the evidence reviewed, these are the features that clearly set it apart.
- Consider Core only if your account still offers it and your priorities are online console multiplayer, a smaller curated catalog and member deals. Confirm the current price and benefits in your region first, since the Core page does not establish them.
- Do not rely on the Core page alone if you are already a Core subscriber. Its silence on renewal, transition and pricing means you should check your own account’s billing and plan details.
In short, Ultimate offers more on every axis the current US comparison covers. Core’s case rests on a lower price and a narrower, multiplayer-focused package, and that case can only be judged against the figures shown in your region.
