What’s the Point of Rebirth in Diablo 3?

Rebirth starts a new Seasonal run on an existing non-Seasonal hero. It keeps the name and time-played record but resets the character to level 1, without old gear or Paragon progress.

Rebirth lets you start a new Seasonal run on a hero you already have. The hero keeps its name and its time-played record, but returns as a level 1 Seasonal character without its old gear, Paragon progress, or Season-linked benefits. Its purpose is continuity of identity, not power. You get a fresh Season with a character whose history you still recognize.

How rebirth works

Rebirth is available only for non-Seasonal characters. Blizzard’s Season 5 rebirth article from 2016 describes the process as follows:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  1. Open the hero-selection screen and choose a non-Seasonal character.
  2. Use the Rebirth option for that hero. The character becomes a Seasonal character and starts at level 1.
  3. Equipped and carried items are removed from the hero and mailed to your non-Seasonal characters, so they are moved rather than deleted.

Because the hero is converted rather than copied, the Season version is the same character with a clean slate. The name and time-played record carry over; the build, gear, and Paragon standing do not.

What carries over and what does not

The table below separates the parts of a hero that persist from the parts that reset. The source column shows which Blizzard document the entry rests on, since the later guides and launch articles repeat some points and add others.

Element After rebirth Source
Hero name Kept Blizzard Season 5 rebirth article (2016)
Time-played record Kept Blizzard Season 5 rebirth article (2016)
Character level Reset to level 1 Blizzard Season 13 launch article
Equipped and carried gear Removed and mailed to non-Seasonal characters Blizzard Season 5 rebirth article (2016)
Paragon level and Paragon points Not available to the hero until the Season ends Blizzard Seasons on Console guide
Challenges Not available to the hero until the Season ends Blizzard Seasons on Console guide
Kanai’s Cube powers Not available to the hero until the Season ends Blizzard Seasons on Console guide
Achievements Stay with your non-Seasonal progression Blizzard Season 5 rebirth article (2016)
Crafting recipes and artisan levels Stay with your non-Seasonal progression Blizzard Season 5 rebirth article (2016)
Unlocked stash tabs Stay with your non-Seasonal progression Blizzard Season 5 rebirth article (2016)

The practical effect is that a reborn hero is a new Seasonal character wearing an old name. Account-wide systems such as recipes and stash tabs remain tied to your non-Seasonal play, so the Season does not wipe them.

Why players use rebirth

The reason to rebirth is attachment to a particular character. A hero that has been played for a long time carries a name and a playtime history that a new Seasonal hero would not have. Rebirth keeps those, so the character you have invested in can take part in the Season.

Diablo III: Ultimate Evil Edition
  • For PlayStation owners, Diablo III: Reaper of Souls - Ultimate Evil Edition offers 'The Last of Us' Nephalem Rift, a randomized dungeon swarming with Stalkers, Clickers and Bloaters in hand-picked environments with a unique 'The Last of Us' yellow spore effect. Also included is the 'Guise of the Colossi' Unique Armor; a unique transmogrification plan that unlocks six armors that are inspired by 'Shadow of the Colossus' and work for all classes.
  • This Ultimate Evil Edition contains both Diablo III and the Reaper of Souls expansion set, together in one definitive volume.
  • Play solo or form a party of up to four other heroes.

Blizzard’s Seasons on Console guide frames the choice this way: “If you’d rather not create a new character to play in a Season, you can ‘Rebirth’ an existing one.” Blizzard’s Season 13 launch article makes the same point from another angle: “Alternatively, you can use the Season Rebirth feature to continue your adventures on an existing character by starting over this Season.”

Blizzard does not describe rebirth as a gameplay advantage. It does not accelerate leveling, grant special rewards, or carry over power. Its benefit is identity and personal history, and that is the only reason to choose it over a new hero.

Rebirth versus a new Seasonal hero

Both routes put you into the Season at level 1 with no inherited gear. The differences are in identity and in what happens to the old character’s items.

Factor Rebirth New Seasonal hero
Identity Keeps the old name and time-played record New name and a new record
Starting point Level 1, fresh start Level 1, fresh start
Items from the old hero Equipped and carried items are mailed to non-Seasonal characters Nothing to move; the old hero is unchanged
Account progression Achievements, recipes, artisan levels, and stash tabs remain with non-Seasonal progression Achievements, recipes, artisan levels, and stash tabs remain with non-Seasonal progression

If you do not care about the name or history, a new Seasonal hero gives you the same fresh start with less to manage afterwards.

Limits and rules to check

Blizzard’s Season 5 rebirth article from 2016 lists several rules that are worth knowing before you rebirth:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Rebirth is limited to three characters per Season.
  • Items mailed to non-Seasonal characters can be reclaimed for up to 30 days.
  • To retrieve the mailed items, log in with a non-Seasonal character of the matching game type.
  • Fallen Hardcore characters are not eligible for rebirth.

These figures describe the feature as it was documented in 2016, and they may have changed in later patches. Check the rebirth prompt and your mail in the current client before planning around the three-per-Season cap or the 30-day window. Treat the mailed gear as something to claim promptly rather than assume it will stay available.

What happens when the Season ends

Seasons are fresh-start modes with their own progress and the Season Journey challenges. At the end of a Season, Blizzard says seasonal characters and the progress earned in the Season move into non-Seasonal play. Rebirth therefore brings a familiar hero into another fresh cycle, while the Season itself supplies the new start and the journey.

In short, rebirth is a continuity feature. It keeps the hero’s identity and playtime record for a new Seasonal run, and it leaves the old build, gear, and Paragon standing behind.
