What’s the Real Difference Between AAA and AA Games?

AAA usually means blockbuster-scale resources and expectations; AA generally describes a smaller professional middle tier. Neither label has a universal cutoff or measures quality.

AAA games are typically the industry’s biggest productions, with more development and marketing resources and broader commercial expectations. AA games are generally professionally funded projects at a smaller, middle-tier scale. These are informal labels, not official grades: neither has a universal budget cutoff, and neither tells you whether a game is good.

What do AAA and AA mean?

The labels describe a game’s approximate position by production scale. AAA, said “triple-A,” usually refers to blockbuster projects backed by substantial resources. AA, or “double-A,” usually means a professional production that sits between the largest releases and many indie projects. The New York City Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment and UNI Global Union both describe game classifications such as AAA as informal, rather than categories set by universal rules (NYC Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment; UNI Global Union).

Epic Games Store’s October 2023 explainer, quoting Raptor PR founder and CEO Rana Rahman, describes AA studios as generally not large enough to be AAA studios but larger than indie studios (Epic Games Store). That is a useful shorthand, not a definition that settles every game’s category.

How do AAA and AA games tend to differ?

These are tendencies, not a checklist. A single publisher, budget, or feature does not determine a game’s label.

Aspect AAA tendency AA tendency
Development and marketing Among the industry’s largest resource commitments; marketing can be substantial. More constrained than the biggest blockbuster productions, but generally above the budgets of many indie projects.
Publisher and production Major publisher backing and coordination across internal or external studios are common. Publisher support is possible, often alongside a smaller development footprint.
Scope and audience Large-scale production and broad commercial reach are common expectations. A more focused scope and lower production scale are common.
Creative latitude Large investments can bring pressure to appeal to broad markets and meet commercial expectations. A more focused project may allow different creative choices, but publisher or commercial constraints can still apply.
Quality No quality guarantee. No quality penalty.

Budgets are often undisclosed, and the sources do not establish an authoritative current AA budget range or team-size threshold. Epic’s 2023 article reported an estimated $174 million creation cost for Cyberpunk 2077, attributing the figure to Omdia Senior Games Analyst James McWhirter; it also said he believed marketing may have cost more. That is an estimate for one title, not a definition of AAA or a benchmark for other games.

Which games are examples?

Epic Games Store names Red Dead Redemption 2, The Last of Us, and Madden NFL games as AAA examples. They illustrate common usage; they are not entries on an official list. A game’s label is best understood in context, considering its overall production and commercial scale rather than matching it to a single example.

Why is there no clear line between the categories?

  • No shared cutoff: There is no universal rule specifying a budget, headcount, or feature set that turns an AA game into an AAA game.
  • Private and varied budgets: Production costs are not always public, and individual projects can allocate money differently between development and marketing.
  • Different kinds of scale: A project may have a large publisher but a comparatively focused production, or an ambitious scope without the resources of a blockbuster.
  • Labels serve as shorthand: They help describe broad industry tiers, but they cannot capture every studio, funding model, or game.

Does AAA mean a game is better than AA?

No. The labels describe production scale and industry position, not quality. A larger budget may support a bigger production, but it does not guarantee that the result will be more enjoyable or polished. A smaller project can be successful and well made; judge the game itself rather than treating its tier as a verdict.
