The company itself dates its founding to 2004, so the year you see depends on whether a source means the company or the platform.
The short answer
The date most often cited for Roblox’s birthday is September 1, 2006, the formal release of the game and platform. That is the milestone to use if you want to celebrate the launch of Roblox as a product that players could use.
Why some sources say 2004
Roblox Support’s company-information page states that “Roblox was founded in 2004” and names David Baszucki and Erik Cassel as the founders. That date refers to the company. The 2006 date refers to the platform’s launch. Both can be correct because they describe different events.
| Milestone | Year | What it refers to | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Company founding | 2004 | Roblox Corporation as a company, per Roblox Support’s company-information page | Roblox Support: Roblox Company Information |
| Platform formal release | September 1, 2006 | The formal release of the game and platform, as given in the Roblox Corporation reference | Wikipedia: Roblox Corporation |
| Founders’ description | 2006 | David Baszucki’s description of when he and Erik Cassel founded Roblox, in a 2024 official post | Roblox RDC 2024: Roblox’s Next Frontier |
What the official sources say
Roblox founder and CEO David Baszucki wrote in a 2024 official Roblox post: “When Erik Cassel and I founded Roblox in 2006, we were motivated by a question that still drives the company today: How do humans connect through play?” That statement places the founding effort in 2006, which fits the platform launch year, but it does not name a day.

Which date to use
- For a platform anniversary, party, or article headline about the launch of Roblox, use September 1, 2006.
- For a company history, such as when Roblox Corporation was founded, use 2004 and name the company explicitly.
- If you are writing about the founders’ motivation or early work, 2006 is the year Baszucki himself uses.
Limits of the evidence
The exact day, September 1, 2006, comes from a secondary reference, not from a Roblox statement that gives the same date. The official pages reviewed for this article confirm 2004 as the company founding year and describe 2006 as the founding period for the platform, but they do not state September 1. If you need that day in a formal citation, check the current Roblox newsroom or company history pages before relying on it.
Roblox Support also states that the company was founded in 2004 and names David Baszucki and Erik Cassel as its founders, which is the only source here that gives the company date directly.
