Sonic the Hedgehog’s birthday is June 23. SEGA marks the date because it is the North American release date of the original Sonic the Hedgehog game, which came out in 1991. The date belongs to the game’s launch, not to a documented birth event for the character.
Why June 23?
SEGA’s official Sonic Channel page states the link directly. The Japanese original reads: “※世界で一番はじめにリリースされた北米版の発売日「1991年6月23日」が、ソニックの誕生日となっています。” In English, that means the North American release date of June 23, 1991, the first release of the game anywhere in the world, is Sonic’s birthday.
SEGA’s own framing therefore treats the birthday as a convention tied to the game’s debut. The published material we could check does not include a named designer explaining why that particular date was chosen, so any longer origin story should be treated as unconfirmed.
Release dates differ by region
Because the birthday comes from a release date, the region matters. SEGA’s manual for the original game lists the launch dates below.

| Region | Original release date | Source |
|---|---|---|
| United States | June 23, 1991 | SEGA manual |
| Europe | June 23, 1991 | SEGA manual |
| Japan | July 26, 1991 | SEGA manual |
The North American date is the one SEGA designates as Sonic’s birthday. Japan’s release came about five weeks later, so describing June 23, 1991 as a worldwide launch date would be inaccurate.
How the game performed
SEGA’s company history describes Sonic the Hedgehog as a hit that sold more than four million copies. That page does not give a year for the figure, nor does it say whether the total covers all regions or a specific measurement period, so it should be cited only with that caveat.

Revisiting the original games
If you want to play the classics rather than just learn the date, SEGA sells Sonic Origins Plus, a collection of classic Sonic titles. SEGA’s page describes a premium physical edition that includes a 20-page artbook and lists Amazon among physical retailers. The collection is a later release, not the 1991 original, and platform editions and retail availability can change, so confirm both before buying.
