Start with the age rating for the exact Call of Duty game in your country—not the franchise name. If your son is below that game’s local rating, wait. If he meets it, check the content descriptors and consider whether he is ready for violent content, competitive online play, voice chat and in-game purchases. Ratings are a useful starting point, not a universal judgment about an individual child.
Why there is no single age for Call of Duty
Call of Duty is a franchise with multiple games, and their ratings can differ by title and region. The ESRB’s general franchise entry is rated Teen for Blood and Violence, while Activision’s US catalog lists Black Ops 7 and other individual installments as Mature 17+. Activision’s UK catalog lists Black Ops 7 and several other titles as PEGI 18+. These listings use different rating systems and should not be treated as interchangeable. Check the exact game’s local package or storefront before deciding.
For Australian context, the eSafety Commissioner says some Call of Duty games are rated MA15+ and others R18+. Its guide was last updated June 5, 2024. Ratings and publisher catalogs can change, so verify the current local listing when you are considering a particular game.
What to check before saying yes
Read the exact game’s rating and descriptors
Look up the specific installment and version your son wants to play, then read both its age category and content descriptors. The ESRB explains that its ratings provide information about what is in a game so parents can make informed choices for their family. A category alone may not tell you which content matters most to you; descriptors add detail.

Consider his readiness, not just his age
Ask whether he can handle the violence and any language described for that title, and whether he can manage competition and contact with strangers. Children differ, and the official guidance reviewed here does not establish one developmental age at which every child is ready. If you are unsure, waiting is a reasonable choice; you can reconsider later.
Decide how online communication will work
Call of Duty team play can include voice chat. Before online play, talk about what your son should do if another player says something upsetting or inappropriate. Decide whether voice chat will be enabled, and show him how to mute, block or report players where those options are available.

Set expectations for time and spending
Some games include in-game purchases. Agree on whether purchases are allowed and, if so, who approves them. Use the parental controls available on the device to manage game ratings, play time, internet access and spending where supported.
A practical decision sequence
- Identify the exact game and platform. Do not decide from “Call of Duty” alone; ratings and features can vary by installment and version.
- Check the local rating and descriptors. Use the rating for your country and the exact title, and follow applicable local rules and account requirements.
- Make a readiness judgment. Consider the game’s described content, your son’s response to violence and language, and how he handles competitive play and contact with strangers.
- Set online and household rules. Decide on voice chat, play time and purchases; explain how to mute, block or report a player when those features are available.
- Revisit the decision. Review it if the game or its online features change, or if your son’s response shows that the current arrangement is not working.
Ratings and account terms are separate checks
A game rating is not the same as the publisher’s account conditions. Activision’s Terms of Use, dated September 5, 2025, state an age-13 baseline subject to the terms and applicable product ratings and restrictions. They also recommend that parents become familiar with device controls and accompany children under 13—or the applicable local age—online. Check the current terms for the title and region as well as the game’s rating.
