Use a playlist when a scheduled broadcast needs to play several prerecorded videos in a deliberate order—for example, a set of demos, workshop sessions, or program segments. Use a single prerecorded event when one recording is enough. If you want to intersperse prerecorded clips with a live host or guest, choose a mixed-content production workflow instead: Restream says its playlists cannot currently blend prerecorded and live content.
Choose by the shape of the program

When a playlist makes the program better
A playlist is useful when viewers should experience multiple recordings as one planned broadcast, rather than as unrelated uploads. It can give a workshop a session-by-session order, put a product demonstration after an introduction, or arrange a longer music or fundraising block. It also gives the producer a way to schedule that sequence as one event.
It is not automatically the right choice just because the source material is prerecorded. If there is only one recording, schedule that recording as a single-video event. If the program needs a live introduction, a guest appearance, or real-time transitions between clips, use a production workflow that supports mixing live and prerecorded material.
Check the destination before scheduling unattended playback
Restream says scheduled video files and playlists go live automatically at their scheduled time. Its scheduling guide also notes that some connected platforms, including TikTok and Instagram, require a manual start on the destination. Automatic scheduling in the production service therefore does not guarantee an unattended start everywhere: confirm the behavior for every selected channel before relying on it.

Advance event links are also destination-dependent. Restream says scheduled playlists can have advance links on Facebook, YouTube, and LinkedIn; when a destination does not support an advance event link, it advises sharing the profile URL instead. Check what link viewers will actually be able to open before promoting the broadcast.
Know Restream’s documented playlist limits
Restream’s playlist help page, published July 25, 2026, documents these product-specific constraints. They are not universal limits for prerecorded streaming services.

- Edits before broadcast: videos can be added, removed, or rearranged only before the playlist goes live. While it is airing, graphics and chat can still be edited.
- Two-minute buffer: back-to-back playlists run as separate streams with a two-minute gap.
Restream separately documents optional looping of a prerecorded video up to 10 times, available on its Marathon and Media add-on tiers. That is a different workflow from assuming a scheduled playlist can run continuously; check Restream’s current plan terms before choosing it for repeated playback.
Compare the workflow, not just the word “playlist”
Features vary by service and destination. Before committing to a tool, verify the specific workflow you need rather than assuming that similarly named features behave the same way.

- Does each destination accept prerecorded events, and will it start automatically?
- Can you share an event link or announcement before the broadcast?
- What are the maximum playlist duration, clip count, upload, storage, and resolution limits?
- Can the production mix live and prerecorded segments?
- Can you edit, duplicate, or reuse a playlist, and when are edits allowed?
- Does the needed plan support looping or continuous operation?
For example, StreamYard’s help center describes automatic starts for scheduled prerecorded streams, while its scheduling documentation says advance scheduling is unavailable for some destinations, including X, Instagram, and custom RTMP destinations. OneStream Live markets prerecorded streaming, playlists, scheduled streams, and continuous loops; those are features the provider offers, not independent performance guarantees. Check current service documentation for your destination and plan.
