Google Play Games does not keep your saves in one folder you can open on your phone. For games that support Google Play Games autosave, progress is tied to your Google Account and can follow you to a new Android phone or to Play Games on PC. If progress looks missing, the usual fix is to confirm you are signed into the account that held it, not to search for a save file.
Why there is no single save folder
Google’s player help does not give a general file path for Play Games saves. “Google Play Games” is best understood as an account and profile service that some games connect to, not a storage location on your device. Each game decides what it saves and where. Some games sync progress through Play Games, some keep it on the developer’s own account system, and some use both.
Google’s own wording makes the point: “Not all games automatically save your progress.” (Google Play Help, How to restore game data & fix other errors in Google Play Games Mobile App.) Support is therefore a property of each game, not of the Play Games app as a whole.
Check whether a game uses Play Games autosave
- Open the game’s page in the Google Play Store.
- Expand the description.
- Look for the line “Uses Google Play Games Mobile App.” Google’s suggested check for whether the game uses the mobile service is this line.
- If the line is missing, do not count on Play Games to hold the progress. Check the developer’s support pages for how the game stores it.
Confirm which account holds the progress
A different account is the most common reason progress appears to vanish. Google advises checking the account shown at the top of the game’s Achievements or Leaderboards screen.

- Open the game and go to its Achievements or Leaderboards screen.
- Read the account name shown at the top.
- If it is not the account you used before, sign out and reopen the game using the correct account.
Restore progress on a new Android phone
For games that support autosave, restoring progress depends on signing in with the same account, not on copying anything over.
- Set up the new phone and sign in with the Google Account you used on the old device.
- Install the game from Google Play while signed into that account.
- Open the game and check the account on its Achievements or Leaderboards screen, as described above.
- Let the game load and sign in. Progress for supported autosaving games should return through the game’s own sign-in flow.
Google does not publish a sync time for this player-side restore. If the progress has not appeared after the account check, move to the troubleshooting table below rather than repeating the steps.

Play Games on PC
PC support follows the same account logic, with an extra condition: the individual game has to support cross-device sync.
- Sign in to Google Play Games on PC with the same account you use on mobile.
- Check the game’s PC listing for a sync label. Google shows this label on qualifying PC game pages.
- Treat the compatibility badge with caution. Google describes it as based on one-time testing that may not reflect the newest version of a game, so a missing or outdated badge does not prove sync is unavailable.
Play Games profiles and older Google Account progress
Google documents a setting for progress that was linked to a Google Account before you had a Play Games profile. Google says that once a Play Games profile is created, progress previously linked to the Google Account becomes linked to that profile. The setting is described as relevant only to users who do not already have a Games profile. If you already have a profile, this is not the step that will help.

When progress seems to be missing

What “saved” means for each game
Google’s help pages describe account-linked or cloud-synced progress for supported games. They do not identify a universal Android file location, and they do not promise that every game’s progress is stored by Google. For developers: enabling Saved Games
Developers who want Play Games autosave must enable Saved Games in the Play Console. Google’s developer documentation says activation can take up to 24 hours. This is a developer configuration step, not a recovery step for players.

Google’s guidance does not describe a save file you can locate and copy, so it documents no manual backup method. If a game offers its own export or backup option, use that, and confirm with the developer before relying on it.
