The AppID is the game’s numeric Steam application ID, and the item ID is the number assigned to the individual Workshop item. The drive that holds this folder depends on which Steam library the game is installed in, and each game decides how it loads that content, so the Workshop folder is not always the folder the game reads from.
Where the Workshop folder sits
Steam keeps Workshop downloads in the workshop subfolder of each library’s steamapps directory. The default library on Windows is C:Program Files (x86)Steam, so a default install puts the content under C:Program Files (x86)Steamsteamappsworkshopcontent. If you added a second library, for example on a D: drive, the same structure sits under that library’s root, such as D:SteamLibrarysteamappsworkshopcontent. The library is where Steam stores the content, not necessarily the place your game was installed, so always start from the library that contains the game.
Example paths from game documentation
Two game-specific references show what the layout looks like in practice. They are examples from individual titles, not guarantees for every setup.
Transport Fever 2 (AppID 1066780)
The game’s own documentation lists these typical Workshop locations:
#1 Best Overall
- International (UK) Version
- 7.4” diagonal, HDR OLED, 1280 x 800 x RGB, up to 90Hz Refresh rate, High performance touch, <0.1 ms Response time, 1,000 nits peak brightness (HDR), 600 nits (SDR)

- 6 nm AMD APU, CPU: Zen 2 4c/8t, 2.4-3.5GHz (up to 448 GFlops FP32
| Platform | Typical Workshop path |
|---|---|
| Windows | C:Program Files (x86)Steamsteamappsworkshopcontent1066780 |
| Linux | ~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/workshop/content/1066780 or ~/.steam/steam/steamapps/workshop/content/1066780 |
| macOS | /Users/<username>/Library/Application Support/Steam/steamapps/workshop/content/1066780 |
The same documentation notes that the install drive or directory may be changed, so treat these as starting points.
Alien Insanity (AppID 598350)
The Steam-published manual for Alien Insanity gives the Windows subscribed-content folder as C:Program Files (x86)Steamsteamappsworkshopcontent598350. The number 598350 is that game’s AppID, and each subscribed item appears as its own numeric folder inside it.

How to find your own folder
- In your Steam Library, right-click the game and choose Manage, then Browse local files. The address bar shows the game’s folder inside
steamappscommon. The library root is the folder abovesteamapps. - Open
steamappsworkshopcontentinside that library root. - Open the numeric folder that matches the game’s AppID. The AppID appears in the game’s Steam store page address, in the form
store.steampowered.com/app/<AppID>/. - Look for the numeric folder that matches the Workshop item. The item ID appears in the item’s Workshop page address after
?id=. - If you are a developer or modder working with the game’s code, Steamworks provides a way to ask Steam for the path directly, covered below.
Keep Workshop downloads separate from manual mods
A file sitting in the Workshop folder is not automatically the copy the game loads. Several points matter here:
- The Alien Insanity manual separates subscribed content under
steamapps/workshop/content/598350from the game’s ownsteamapps/common/Alien Insanity/Modsdirectory. - The Transport Fever 2 documentation lists Workshop items, manually installed mods, and userdata folders as separate locations.
- Before you copy, edit, or delete files, check the specific game’s documentation. Deleting from the Workshop folder can remove content Steam manages on your behalf.
When the folder is missing or empty
- The item is subscribed but not yet downloaded. Steam installs subscribed items in the background, so a new subscription may not have a folder yet. Check Steam’s Downloads view before concluding it failed.
- The library has moved. If you moved a Steam installation or its
steamappsfolder, the old path will no longer hold the content. Steam Support documents how to move a Steam installation and itssteamappsfolder; use the library locations shown in Steam’s Storage settings to find the new location. - The game loads from elsewhere. If the Workshop folder has the files but the game ignores them, look for the game’s own Mods folder or a setting that points to Workshop content, as described in its documentation.
- The default path does not exist. This usually means the game is in a different library. Start from the library that holds the game rather than assuming
C:Program Files (x86)Steam.
What Steamworks documents for developers
Steamworks describes Workshop as a backend storage and web system for sharing and downloading content. Subscribed items download and install through Steam, and how an item is installed depends on the game’s integration. Games that want the location of an installed item should not hard-code a path. Valve’s Steam Workshop Implementation Guide describes the approach:

Steam’s documentation establishes the general steamapps/workshop/content/<AppID>/<item ID> pattern and the API route for retrieving an installed item’s location. It does not provide a single universal path for every game, and it does not list each game’s exceptions. The two game-specific examples above come from the games’ own documentation, so use your library location and the relevant game’s AppID when you check your own PC.
