On Windows, Skyrim Special Edition keeps its save files in DocumentsMy GamesSkyrim Special EditionSaves, inside your user Documents folder, not in the game’s install folder. That is Bethesda’s documented default. Steam, Microsoft Store and console players can have different access routes, which are covered below.
Finding the save folder on Windows
- Open File Explorer and select Documents. Use the Documents folder of your Windows account. If Documents is redirected to OneDrive, the folder sits under the OneDrive copy of Documents.
- Open My Games.
- Open Skyrim Special Edition.
- Open Saves. Your
.esssave files are in this folder.
The full default parent path is C:Usersuser.nameDocumentsMy GamesSkyrim Special Edition, where user.name stands for your Windows account folder name. The same location can be written as %USERPROFILE%DocumentsMy GamesSkyrim Special EditionSaves; pasting that into the File Explorer address bar opens the folder for the signed-in account.

If the folder seems to be missing, you are most likely browsing the game’s install folder. The common Steam install location, C:Program Files (x86)SteamsteamappscommonSkyrim Special Edition, holds the game executable. Bethesda states that this is the executable location, not the save location.
Where saves live on each platform
The location depends on the storefront and platform. Bethesda’s official guidance covers the standard Windows path. The other rows rely on a third-party guide or on Steam Support and are marked accordingly.

Microsoft Store and Game Pass on PC
A third-party guide reports that Microsoft Store and Game Pass installs keep saves in the packaged-app folder shown in the table. Treat it as a lead to verify on your own machine rather than a guaranteed location. Packaged-app data is usually less straightforward to browse than an ordinary Documents folder.
Before you move or copy anything, confirm which storefront you installed from. A Store copy may not show files under Documents at all. Copy the entire folder to a safe location first, so you can restore it if something goes wrong.

Steam Cloud and conflicting saves
Steam Cloud keeps a synchronized copy of your files separate from the local save folder. Steam Support documents how this local userdata and cloud storage behaves, but the game’s save files remain in the Documents location. A conflict happens when the same save has been changed in two places before the files synchronized.
When Steam asks which copy to keep, or the progress you expect is missing, check the following before choosing:

- Compare the modified dates of the save files in the local
Savesfolder with the last time you played on each machine. - Load the most recent save in each set and check the character’s level, active quests and location against what you remember.
- Keep the copy that matches the progress you want, and move the other set to a separate folder rather than deleting it.
Timestamps alone can mislead. A file can have a recent date while holding older progress, such as an early save written on a second machine after your main playthrough was saved. Recent play history is the more reliable guide.

- Low disk space. Free up room on the drive that holds your Documents folder, then retry the save.
- Security software. Antivirus or firewall rules can stop Skyrim from creating or updating files. Check your security software’s blocked-activity or quarantine log. If Skyrim’s
Savesfolder or the game executable appears there, allow it.
If neither applies, confirm that the Saves folder is writable from your account before assuming a game fault.
