Nintendo chose “Wii” because it sounds like “we,” a word the company said would emphasize that the console was for everyone. Nintendo also said the two lowercase i’s symbolized the system’s distinctive controllers and people gathering to play. The name replaced the console’s public codename, Revolution, on April 27, 2006.

What does “Wii” mean?

Nintendo introduced the final name on April 27, 2006, with the line “Wii. As in ‘we.’” The company said the name sounds like “we” and was meant to convey that the console was for everyone. Nintendo’s announcement also said the name could be remembered around the world, regardless of language, and would not need an abbreviation. Those were Nintendo’s aims, not evidence that every audience found the name intuitive.

Why are there two i’s in Wii?

Nintendo said the two lowercase i characters symbolized both the console’s unique controllers and the image of people gathering to play. The spelling was therefore part of the company’s intended message about the hardware and playing together, rather than just a variation in how to write “we.”

Was the Wii originally called Revolution?

Before the final name was announced, Nintendo’s console was publicly known by the codename Revolution. Nintendo described Revolution as expressing the company’s direction and Wii as representing the answer. The Wii name was announced shortly before E3 2006.

A later explanation of the change came through secondary reporting. A May 29, 2006 Nintendo Life report, attributing its account to IGN and CNNMoney.com, quoted Shigeru Miyamoto saying Revolution had seemed appropriate but “almost threatening to non-gamers.” He reportedly said Nintendo wanted a friendlier, more inviting name. This explanation is distinct from the rationale in Nintendo’s official announcement.

How did Nintendo defend the choice?

At a corporate management briefing on June 7, 2006, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata said he had been among the people who decided on the product name. He also said, “I have never thought that it was a mistake to name it, ‘Wii.’” His comment records his public defense of the choice; it does not establish the full internal selection process or every factor behind it. Iwata’s briefing remarks provide the later context.
