On Wii U, select your Mii at the upper left of the menu to see your Nintendo Network ID (NNID) in user settings. On Nintendo 3DS, open System Settings → Nintendo Network ID Settings; the ID appears on the upper screen. Neither console displays your password. If you forgot it, use Nintendo’s password-reset process to request a temporary password by email.
First, check whether you mean an NNID or a Nintendo Account
A Nintendo Network ID and a Nintendo Account are separate credentials. Nintendo Support says they are different accounts. NNIDs are associated primarily with Wii U and Nintendo 3DS; Nintendo Accounts are used primarily with Nintendo Switch, the web, and smart devices. Use the recovery process for the account the device or service is asking you to sign into—one account’s password should not be assumed to work for the other. Where to find your NNID on a console
Wii U
- Open the Wii U menu.
- Select the Mii at the upper left of the screen.
- Open the user settings screen and read the NNID shown there.
Nintendo 3DS
- Open System Settings.
- Select Nintendo Network ID Settings.
- Read the NNID displayed on the upper screen.
Nintendo says NNIDs are currently obtained through Wii U and Nintendo 3DS consoles. Its NNID FAQ gives these console steps.
How to reset a forgotten NNID password
You cannot look up the existing password in the console settings. If you know the NNID and can access its registered email, request a temporary password through Nintendo’s NNID password-reset guidance. Nintendo’s described online reset route requires email receipt verification to have been completed for the account.

If you cannot use the registered email
If you still have the Wii U or 3DS linked to the NNID, Nintendo’s guidance describes changing the registered email from that console. The process calls for the support information displayed on the console, its serial number, and the date of birth registered to the NNID. After setting an email address you can use, request a temporary password. Nintendo says a parent or guardian should handle the procedure for a user under 13. If the console is unavailable
Nintendo says an online NNID lookup is possible when email receipt verification was completed. Its guidance does not establish a self-service workaround if verification was not completed and the console is unavailable; it also does not say that an email address alone will always recover the ID. Contact Nintendo Support for options in your region if neither route works. The cited instructions are from Nintendo’s Japanese support pages, so local procedures may differ. NNID FAQ

If you meant your Nintendo Account password
Use Nintendo Account recovery rather than the NNID reset route. Nintendo publishes separate password guidance for Nintendo Accounts. Nintendo Account support is the starting point; follow the reset flow for the region and account you use. Nintendo also says the service for merging Wii U/3DS eShop balances into Switch ended on March 12, 2024, so balance merging is not a current reason to recover an NNID. In a notice dated April 24, 2020 and updated June 9, 2020, Nintendo Co., Ltd. warned that reusing an NNID password for a Nintendo Account could expose balances and registered payment methods to misuse. The notice said about 160,000 NNIDs might have been subject to unauthorized login in its initial report, then about 140,000 additional NNIDs in the update. Nintendo said fewer than 1% of the worldwide NNIDs potentially accessed might have had unauthorized transactions through Nintendo Accounts; that figure applies only to the population and qualification Nintendo stated at the time, not to all accounts or current risk.
