In vanilla Skyrim, the horse you are riding follows you when you fast-travel. If you fast-travel to a city, look for it at that city’s stable outside the gates. If you later ride a different owned horse, the horse you left behind generally returns to the stable where it was purchased.
Where your horse goes after fast travel
Bethesda’s Skyrim manual says that when you fast-travel to a city, your horse is left at the local stable outside the city gates. So if you arrived in a city without seeing your mount beside you, check the stable just beyond the entrance.
What happens when you switch to another owned horse?
The Skyrim Wiki’s horse reference and Prima Games’ guide describe the general behavior this way: the horse you most recently rode and fast-traveled with accompanies you, while other owned horses return to the stables where they were purchased.
This means the stable where you find a horse after arriving in a city is not necessarily its permanent home. The destination stable is where your current mount is left after city fast travel; a different owned horse that you have stopped riding generally goes back to its purchase stable.

How to look for a missing owned horse
- If you fast-traveled to a city while riding it: check the local stable outside the city gates.
- If you have since ridden another owned horse: check the stable where the missing horse was purchased.
Do special mounts and mods follow the same rule?
These locations describe the general behavior of ordinary owned horses in the base game. The cited references do not establish that every special mount, add-on, or mod behaves identically, so the rule should not be treated as a guarantee for those cases.
