Y is the middle number in your Minecraft coordinates: the X, Y, Z position readout. In Java Edition, press F3 to see it; in Bedrock Edition, turn on Show coordinates in the game settings.

What the Y level means

Minecraft shows your position as three values: X, Y, and Z. X and Z describe horizontal position; Y is the vertical coordinate, indicating your height or depth. Read the middle value to find your Y level.

See your Y coordinate in Java Edition

  1. While playing, press F3 to open the debug overlay.
  2. Find the XYZ position readout. Its second number is Y.

Keep coordinate information visible in Java 1.21.9 and later

In Java Edition 1.21.9, press F3+F6 to open Debug Options. Use the coordinate information setting to show it in the overlay or keep it visible when the overlay is closed. The shortcut may differ in older versions; F3+F6 is the shortcut for the released 1.21.9 feature.

See your Y coordinate in Bedrock Edition

  1. Pause the game and open Settings.
  2. Select Game, then scroll to World Options.
  3. Turn on Show coordinates.
  4. Read the middle number in the displayed X, Y, Z coordinates.

Key behavior can depend on your keyboard or platform, and menu labels may vary between versions. If a Java key combination does not work, check the controls for your keyboard setup; the official guide’s instructions do not cover every platform variation.
